I've never really give BJM a chance because Anton Newcombe comes off as a bigger prick than Courtney Taylor, and that's actually kinda hard to do, when you think about it. Perhaps I'll give them that chance based upon your recommendation.
More than likely, though, I'll forget about this whole conversation within 15 minutes.

meh. Some people might pay up once just for the novelty, but it's not going to change anything. Radiohead is one of the few bands that can do this and possibly still make money, or not care if they don't.
I think you're being kinda shortsighted. If Radiohead is successful, how many bands will choose to re-up with a label when their contract is over when they can make four or five times the money themselves? Granted, very few bands remain popular over the life of a major label record contract, but this could have serious implications if it works for Radiohead (and if they release their sales figures).

Playing "spot the electronica/hip hop samples" while listening to Isaac Hayes's "Hot Buttered Soul" provided a bit of entertainment for Mrs. Foolsgold and me while we made scones last night.

Popping in the new Springsteen disc, hearing the sound of Roy Bittan's piano chords like the voice of a friend you haven't seen in 20 years ... and all is right with the world.

Every time I hear "Tropical Ice-land" I get to thinking Fiery Furnaces aren't so bad. That song is kinda fun.
... and then I hear a different Fiery Furnaces song and I'm reminded again how horribly they suck.

The Radiohead .mp3s will be encoded at 160kbps to keep them off torrent sites like oink, which have a minimum bitrate for sharing.
Now the download only deal isn't looking too good if you paid more than $5.

I DJed two high school dances this past weekend, and this was the number one most requested song by every single freaking teenager. It's on a level almost as bad as Detroit Grand Pubahs' Sandwiches, though. I absolutely hate this song. Ugh.

There are programs out there that'll "rip" the original file into a higher bit rate...

I just heard it while I was shopping this weekend. I was in one of those typical east Dayton closeout stores that have really cute, cheap clothes - but also a very poorly placed boombox tuned into hot-whatever...today's hottest hip-hop and R&B. The song was SO bad, that I stopped short of finding a cute pair of shoes and just left.

Yeah, but those don't improve on the sound quality, really. Instead of getting an .mp3 directly from the source, you're ripping from a medium quality copy of the source, you know?

I'm just saying you can fake the bitrate, making sharing a possibility.
