Growing up, I was a dedicated listener of my local Top 40 channel. I listened to American Top 40 every Sunday (starting early in elementary school) and spent New Year's Eve writing down the year's top hits. Although in high school I had my classic rock phase and started to make the transition to U2, R.E.M., and the Indigo Girls, I was still familiar with the current hits. Then I went off to college, started listening to 97X, and my musical taste was forever changed.

So torture myself, I'm listening to our local Top 40 station. To make it worse, the morning show is the most offensive radio I've ever heard. I'm already shuddering thinking about it. You may have heard about the host encouraging drivers to terrorize bicyclists in 2003; he's been suspended several times for comments made on air.

So on Friday, October 23, I'm making the plunge. There will be a break in the middle of the day for a staff meeting and lunch, but I expect I'll end up with about 8 hours total.

No - today. I just can't type.

So I've tuned in. The hit music channel doesn't play music. So far I've heard two traffic reports, a weather report, a trivia game, listener shoutouts, and now an interview with Greg Proops, who is doing a show tonight. This part is at least tolerable. Oh, there's been a lot of ads, too.

I just had another meeting schedule, so a reprieve - even before I've really started. Another weather report and more ads. It's been a thrilling 30 minutes.

Finally back at my desk. While currently I've just heard several ads, there was a song - Dangerous. I've never heard of Kardinal Offishall.

So not so bad at this point, but that's because it's all new.
Beyonce - If I Were a Boy (from her upcomig release)
Flyleaf - All around Me (who?)
Ne-Yo - Closer (no clue)
Miley Cyrus - 7 Things (they play her on the radio?)
Rehab - Bartender Song (another I don't know)
Nickleback - Gotta Be Somebody (got to have a little "rock")
Pink - So What (I kind of like this one)
Old School Track: Biz Markie - Just a Friend

now we're back to ads. 4 so far

Are you getting the political ads because that would suck harder than the odd Nickleback track.

Yes - political ads, but not as bad as TV.  The current ad is for a Wine and Beer Festival. This set had one for Elizabeth Dole.

Since the last ad break I heard

Secondhand Smoke - Fall fot You (who?)
Daughtry - What about Now (American Idol entry 1)
Chris Brown - Forever (a good dance beat)
Carrie Underwood - Before He Cheats (American Idol entry 2)

more ads

Now it's Katy Perry - Hot N Cold.

My first repeat - Dangerous. At least it took an hour and 15 minutes.

Before that was
Leona Lewis - Better in Time (didn't she sing at the closing cermonies at the Olympics?)
Tonic - If You Could See

Then I got
Paramore - That's What You Get
Jason Mraz - I'm Yours
and repeat #2 - Ne-Yo

Now an acoustic version of Matchbox 20 or similar band (it doesn't show up on the playlist)

9 ads. This was the democratic break with Obama and our senate race
