I have to say, after getting through this season, I am totally sold on this show.

Ron Swanson is one of the funniest TV characters of all time.  I am in love with the April Ludgate-doofy guy (whose name I don't remember) pairing.  Amy Poehler is actually trying harder to be more like a normal person instead of some Michael Scott freakball who would never actually exist... her playing the straight woman with just randomly funny straight woman lines works WAY better than her trying to be the comedic center.

Aziz Ansari is maybe skewing a little too stupid towards the end of the season, but I love the artsy friends he runs around with and the stupid entrepreneurial crap he tries.

Adam Scott is a perfect fit and meshes well with Amy Poehler.  Rob Lowe's lines like "that is LITERALLY the best thing I have ever tasted" has me on a rag of saying something is "LITERALLY" the best thing I have ever seen, which usually elicits a chuckle from Andrea.  And Rashida Scott as the nice but into trashy guys RN provides a nice gal pal for Poehler.

Between this and Community, I'm well on board for one of them to inherit The Office's 9:00 slot as that show clearly needs to get shut down.

I've just started watching it, and I really like the show, for many of the reasons you listed, Butter.

I also like it because as a person who has spent many a year in local government as a minion, it rings true in many ways. The pettyness, the importance of gripping on to your little slice of appropriations, the absurdity of it all... it's out there folks!

Ron Fucking Swanson is the best character on TV today.  I want a Duke Silver mug.

I have still never found an episode of this show funny. I've tried about 5 times, because people rave about it, but it is clearly not the show for me.

Community, on the other hand, I freaking love.

The show is largely character driven, even by today's standards.  It's not so much that if you miss a week, you won't be able to follow what's going on... but if you miss a week, you miss more chances to connect with the characters.  If you don't connect with them, the show won't work at all.

As they said on AV Club, (paraphrasing) what they do on this show is only funny because it is these characters doing them.  It wouldn't really work on other characters or with other actors.

Though, if you watched the episode where Leslie had to give the campaign speech and had to walk like 50 yards on bare ice because they ran out of red carpet and didn't find THAT funny, then you need to get your funny recalibrated.

I don't think it's that hard to get the humor without knowing the characters.
