Thanks for all the great advice.
I am not having as many issues today, so hopefully whatever I did 'wrong' I am no longer doing wrong. Whatever TF it was?!!
I am bad for not always warming up before I do something and maybe thanks to the temperatures dropping lately my ageing bones and muscles were just too cold to be exerted to the degree they were?
Anyway there was some good pointers in your responses and I will heed them now. Again, thank you.

3rd: Has anyone tried foam rolling? I was looking at getting one of
these
in hopes it would help my calves/shins recover from my running.
I haven't tried foam rolling, but one of the physical therapists at the chiropractic office I visit is a really big proponent of it.

Jen, I have a foam roller and I purchased it because it really felt like it helped with my pulled muscle issues. It's a more basic one -
this, I think
- but I don't use it for shin splints. I started using it at the Physical Therapists office and loved it so much that I bought one for myself. Hard to say if it ACTUALLY helps muscle pulls, but I definitely think it helped with my IT band problems initially so that's good. And I've yet to pull anything after using it pre-workout.

Ok great, thanks. Might have to either give myself a Christmas present or put it on my list.

Am I the only person around here who can't run while wearing gloves? They make my hands all tingley in a bad way. I ran a 5K on Saturday and it was FREEZING outside. But, I couldn't bring myself to put on gloves. The Greg thought I was a big weirdo when I told him this. So, am I the only one who has this problem?

Are your gloves too tight? Maybe try switching to a light mitten and see if that helps.

This seems to happen in any pair of gloves I have ever worn. But, I've never tried a mitten. Thanks, FG.

Never had a problem with gloves, no. Not a particularly helpful post, I know, but you asked if we've had this problem!

So Mark and I are entering the serious portion of the C25K portion. Today we run 9 minutes two times with a short run in between and Wednesday it is 20 minutes!
I bought one of the foam rollers I was looking at and holy cow it is the best thing I have ever bought for myself I am pretty sure. I use it daily on my back/neck and usually on my shins and calves. I definitely do it after a run on my shins and calves and that really helps with the tightness. My shins still do hurt after a run but the good thing is that they don't seem to bother me WHILE I am running. If our pace is just right, and therefore my stride, the pain is even less after so I know it is related to how fast I go and my stride length.
Running seems to be going better this time around with the C25K program. I am still not convinced I'll ever be a runner but at least for now, I plan on getting through this and the Flying Pig 5K. After that, we'll see.

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but do these things come with instruction manuals or breakdowns of different moves you can try with them?
BTW - good job on getting to the serious portion with enthusiasm.
I found out today that my # was drawn in the lottery for the AJC Peachtree Road Race on 7/4. It's a huge event in Atlanta and I'm happy that I'm finally in a position where I can run and have a good time. WOOHOO!

Hooray for the runners! I need to get off the couch and moving, and I kind of liked training for a 5K a few years ago. I really need to get moving!

When I did the 60 day challenge at work last year, I loved trying to "tick" things off of an activites list that they provided. I can't find the list on-line but here is something similar.

I don't know - probably not. But the internet certainly has a boatload of manuals for them.
