I can't imagine how many CDs Four has.  We should take bets (if betting were legal, of course).

It's not as vast as it once was, I've probably sold a couple thousand in the last year... that being said, I have a few thousand unsellables. Wink

Have not done much music buying since I came back from Toronto in late October, but here are some of my recent purchases:

I am a casual Calexico fan and, since I have found even their best albums to have some filler, I was not about to pull the trigger on a $125 box set of 12 LP's of material originally only available on CD-R's sold at their shows.  Actually, it appears that set has sold out and has now started circulating on the second-hand market starting at $400.  Geez.

At any price point, I'm glad I instead sprang for the single disc compendium of selections from the set.  This collection simultaneously gives the impression the box is better than I thought it might be while indicating it is mostly filler.  Either way, this sampler plays through like most of the band's albums and is, on the whole, better than most of their catalog.

I would recommend this to fans and the curious, but it still didn't leaving me wanting more (let alone 12 LP's)

Only know about this band as result of a 3 disc Harvest Records comp I bought awhile back.  I bought that comp, and continue to explore the label's roster, because I think there's going to be another Syd Barrett or Kevin Ayers.  That hasn't happened, but I have discovered some music of interest that is new to me, such as "Parachute" by The Pretty Things.

I enjoyed the Barclay James Harvest tracks on that comp enough to spring for this five disc collection of their entire output for the label, including previously unreleased studio material and recordings made for radio.  Largely, I bought this because the price was right ($23 after shipping, through an independent retailer on Amazon).

First off, the collection could use a much more substantial booklet than the slight piece included here.  I gladly would have paid up to $10 more for more background on the band, their place in the scene at the time, and notes on recordings.

And that context probably would have me more interested in the material here.  The first disc is pretty strong, as it is mostly pastoral psych/baroque pop in the vein of "Oracle & Odysey".  Mind you, this material is not that good, but it is in a style I enjoy and I keep thinking I have tapped that vein dry.

But after that first disc, the tracks seem to just keep getting longer without really going anywhere.  The booklet, and the web resources I use, describe the band as "prog rock".  For me, that genre usually means interminable noodling, for which I have very little tolerance.  Strange, but this band usually just plays on largely without soloing.  It is a slightly odd beast, but the lack of noodling did not make me more appreciative of songs that are still 8 to 11 minutes long.

Barclay James Harvest turns out to be a very competent band, but one that doesn't seem to have a personality of its own.  Kind of like a really solid bar band or the great many Nuggets bands that further exploration revealed to only have one or two great tracks.

Maybe those additional tracks will grow on me, but I suspect I will tire of this set before that might happen.  All said, I'm glad to have this set for the material I enjoy on it so far.  But it could have had better accompanying booklet, and the enjoyment I have experienced is coupled with the low price for this volume of material.

I still need to get the remaining two sets of the JAMC reissue campaign, but I can say from what I have so far that this is a slam dunk.  Each set is a double digipack housing two CD's, a DVD and booklet.

First there's the booklets.  These things are significant in length and depth, most of them around 24 - 28 pages and packed with surprisingly candid interviews with band members.  Funny how you only ever get the "real" story about a band or a movie after a significant amount of time has passed.  The interviews in these liner notes are frequently laugh-out-loud-funny and even occasionally bittersweet.  Accompanying these interviews are a great many photographs, press clippings and single artwork.

Each of the CD's in these sets are filled to capacity with B-sides, alternative versions, remixes, live and even interview tracks.  Unfortunately for most JAMC fans, they have already purchased most of these tracks before on original singles or previous B-sides comps (of which the band already had three single disc--with two different versions of one of these for the UK and Japan--and a 4 disc collection).

In a perfect world, this material would first be compiled here, as the tracks really belong with their associated albums and the liner notes have very good tack annotation.  Also, this release of "Psychocandy" marks the first time the infamous would-be-b-side "Jesus Fuck" has been released.  The track is deeply awful but, still, it is hard to believe something this legendary would not see the light of day until now.

Rounding out the sets are the DVD's that include all period videos (with the exception of the U.S. version of "Far Gone & Out", left off per the band's request), as well as some TV performances and interviews.  I don't usually care for live performances, but I was greatly amused by a moment in their performance on the Jools Holland show when Jim throws a mic after discovering it has been muted and then apparently kicks or punches the camera currently showing William soloing.  There's also moments of sly humor in their TV interviews, such as when the brothers talk about not wanting to be famous, and are so unknown that they do not know each other or even themselves.

Not for more casual fans, but essential for those who want to dig keep into the band's catalog.  Alas, the multiple earlier incarnations of this material often reeked of cash grab, whereas these are obviously a labor of love.  All is forgiven, as these packages are of the caliber Rhino used to produce back in its prime.  And, go figure, there is a Rhino logo on the backs of these sets, although there is no other indication of their involvement.

As a recent transfer from the WOXY boards, just suffice it to say I've bought over 100 CDs this year so far. Too many to list... But I'll join the fun for the "50 CDs in 2012" list  Cool

Bubba, I feel your pain on the ebay sellers who jack up the prices on rare and OOP material.  I see tons of this with Pearl Jam's stuff that's sold only to fanclub members.  There was a special 3-disc edition of the PJ20 movie that came out a few months ago.  DVD sold for $60, Blu-Ray for $75.  It sold out, now you can't find a copy on ebay for less than $200.  It happens when they release vinyl, bootlegs.  I know there are people who specifically buy from the Ten Club just so they can flip it later.  In a capitalist society, it's their right to do, but...I'm not a fan of that.  Pardon the pun.

Went to Amazon to grab the artwork for iTunes because for some lame reason it didn't import in and I found this follow up release. Trying to decide if I should be pissed off or not because I bought the CD album for 11.99 but I could have saved a few bucks and almost doubled my listening pleasure with 14 more tracks. Probably will still download this because it is pretty good. Nice to hear Joel  Cadbury from South again.

Muppets: The Green Album - Picked this up on Amazon yesterday for $4.99 (mp3 download).  It's a mixed bag but some of it is fantastic making the full album worth $5 at least.  Highlights are the weird OK Go version of the theme song, the Weezer/Hayley Williams (whoever that is) version of Rainbow Connection, and the Alkaline Trio version of Movin' Right Along.  Andrew Bird's Bein' Green is pretty fantastic, and as much as I wanted to hate it, because it was Matt Nathanson, the cover of I Hope that Something Better Comes Along is very good.  The clear winner for me though, and Cuddlyevil will appreciate this, is My Morning Jacket's take on Our World from Emmet Otter's Jugband Christmas.  I'm on the fence about Rachel Yamagata's I'm Going to Go Back There Someday.  This is one of my favorite Muppet songs, actually one of my favorite songs in general, so I want to like it but I'm struggling with it.  The original is undeniably low key as is Yamagata's version but her's is downright doleful which would be okay on it's own yet it has some weird whimsy thrown in that seems out of place.  The melancholy harmonica parts that make the original great, in my opinion, are completely absent.

On the other side of the coin there are some real stinkers on here as well.  Amy Lee's Halfway Down the Stairs and Brandon Saller's Night Life do nothing for me, but this could have more to do with not remembering the songs.  Why The Fray bothered wasting studio time recording Mahna Mahna I do not understand, they simply could have taken the original to Kinko's if they wanted a carbon copy.

Airborne Toxic Event and Sondre Lerche turn in okay tracks with Mr. Bassman and Night Life respectively but the original material here isn't nearly as strong as the rest of the album so those two songs end up being kind of meh almost by default.

Overall I would recommend it if you can get it at a good price like I did.  Fans of the show will enjoy most of the album at least.  And while I would skip most anything Weezer does these days, and I'm not a huge fan of OK Go, and don't care for the The Fray or Matt Nathanson at all, the material and spirit of the album trump my feelings for them and they actually deserve credit for doing the material justice.

Did I really just spend that much time reviewing an album of Muppet covers?  Must be the week before a holiday.

1. Pearl Jam - Dissident (3 CD set of a live show they did in 1994).  I had this at one time when it came out, but sold it in a tragic mistake where need for money outweighed the cool rare CDs in Nate's collection.  Thankfully, I spent only about $10 more than what I originally paid.
