That was a fun article.  I want to know what the difference is between a $750 and $150 utilikilt as well.

I want to know why they're more than say, I don't know, $39.99?   At those prices you could get a tailored suit and not look like an asshat.

I think they probably do cost a lot more than a cheap suit jacket.  They are made in small quantities, so less economies of scale.  You're paying more for materials and everything else.  They're also made in the US so labor cost, factory space, and regulatory costs are likely to be higher.  And then I think they also have some sort of social component beyond even that so they are paying green costs.

The article makes it sound like they are semi-hand/custom made. There's some kind of template obviously, but still they have different lengths and individual waist sizes.  Sounds like they make them one at a time.  Someone goes and cuts the pattern and then I guess Spectre adds the snaps one at a time, one garment at a time.laugh  That is some pretty heavy canvas they are using so that's not cheap nor easy to work on.

I'd have no problem wearing skirts if it were socially acceptable.  That's a really big 'if' though.

I was married in a kilt and the whole shebang, from jacket to shoes cost a hair more than my wife's dress.  I don't know if it was money well spent, but on the few occasions I've worn it out, it's been a lot of fun.  And, underwear is a necessity, at least with wool kilts.

They don't seem that comfortable or practical to me.  At least not comfortable or practical enough for me to risk a punch in the face over.

$150 kilts fall under the same principle as $600 vacuum cleaners in my mind.  I was always perfectly happy with the job my $100 vacuum did so you can't possibly convince me that I need to spend $600 on one that performs better, $200 maybe, but not $600.  By the same token you couldn't possibly convince me that any kilt is worth $150, no matter the materials or construction, as I've gone my entire life without caring that I didn't have any kilt at all.

I've worn south Asian shalwar kameez (blousy pants held up with a lightweight rope belt, and a long loose shirt that reaches to the calf) and found it to be the most comfortable thing ever (at least, in a warm climate) because it's the opposite of confining. And having just accidentally ripped the crotch of a pair of jeans simply by lifting my foot up onto a bench to put on a shoe, I'm inclined to applaud clothes with a looser fit. Acceptability will come eventually, just as it did for women in trousers.
