The problem is that when I'm at work I'm often busy doing other things so I'm really only vaguely listening.  Which means that unfortunately a lot of stuff slips by even though technically I "listened" to it.
yep.
there should be a clause for multi-tasking.
so often someone will ask me about a band, if i've heard them....and i give this answer which sounds like i'm trying to be vague and cool, or, more accurately, don't want to appear naive. but really i have probably have heard that album but it was once and i was getting ready for work or something.....showering....whatever....

I'm probably 90% old, 10% new.
I can't stream at work, and I'm not on any of the listening services. I count on Ella to make sure I hear of bands I'd like. Though I have stumbled across a few on my own. (Avetts!)

On average I'd guess 40% new/60% old.  I'm having a hard time getting to listen to music at work which I really miss.  No time!  But when I have time at home, I like to check out what new music my fav internet radio haunts and blogs are playing.

Almost the exact opposite to you these days, mate, listening habit-wise. I'm fortunate to hear 6 Music at work in the background via digital, so there's a good amount of new music to be heard on there. At home, no Internet radio these days, so it's CD's and the odd splash of vinyl.

Enjoy listening to the new stuff on the radio very much, equally enjoy actually listening to the stuff in my small but perfectly formed record collection. So, about a 50/50 split, loosely.

You're in trouble, then, as I seem to be running about 80% old, 20% new these days. I only bought 5 albums last year. But I did add a bunch to my rdio library. (And before we get into the whole subscription versus individual album purchase argument again, I normally buy used CDs, which didn't provide any revenue to the artists, so at least they get something when I play the albums on a subscription service.)

90% New, 10% Old

For one, it's my job to listen to new music. Second, I can't believe people still use the "all new music is crap" argument. There's far too many sources to mine to find music that appeals to any genre, style, or aesthetic. It comes down to convenience and time and those arguments I understand, but generally harping that new music is shite doesn't work for me because it's not true. Sure, there is a lot of crap but isn't that the case no matter the era?

But I really get a lot more out of the 10% than I used to. I include older stuff that I discover there as well. I'm in the middle of a 90s renaissance based around Tsunami and Silkworm.

My percentage of new music has dropped massively in the past couple of years. Most of my time is spent at the fume cupboard, wandering between labs, meetings, etc. so during the day I rarely have the chance to sit at a desk for long enough to have radio/streaming on in the background like I used to. Really need to clean out my walkman at some point and fill it with all the music I need to catch up on during my walk to/from home. I don't like discovering new music that way, though - it's annoying to have to keep checking the screen to see the name of the band or song and memorise them for later. I miss my old woxy.txt file.
