So I saw Dodgeball tonight (Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn). It pretty much stunk. There were a few funny moments/elements, but it was just so dumb (not the concept as much as the execution and writing) and hackneyed, that overall, my impression was negative. I'm just glad I didn't pay money to see it. I knew that I should have low expectations when one of the first "jokes" was Vince Vaughn's character being awakened by his dog licking his balls - and he thought it was a woman because he was half asleep! Ahh hahahahaha. Sooooo funny.
If you have to see it when it comes out, allow me to recommend a cheap matinee.

No, Old School was much, much better and funnier.
Also, I don't think Will Ferrell would have been caught dead in this stinker.

The thing about this movie is that it revels in its 80s-ness. It's a throwback to a bygone era, and for me, was funny as hell. It's SUPPOSED to be dumb. That's the point of the movie. You know going in exactly how it's going to end. Hell, there's even a little easter egg hiding on the treasure chest of money winking and nodding at how ridiculous a premise the whole thing is.
After seeing the previews, I expected exactly what you described: a stupid movie. I walked out surprised at how funny it was and how much I liked it.

i agree...i was surprised how easy it was to let go and just laugh at the silly humor. for $2, it was totally worth it.
i was surprised about how much of the humor was adult though...

Old School was much better.
After seeing it, I would have rather rented it to save a few bucks. I knew it would be silly though, and there were a lot of things I laughed about. A lot of good cameos. It was just a poor film, I thought.
Oh yeah, and I totally thought that the girl in the movie was Maureen McCormick (the original Marsha Brady) at first!
I still have high regards for Vince Vaughn though. (see Made and/or Swingers)

I really enjoyed Dodgeball. sure there were some really stupid things in the movie, but I think it was executed well enough that the laughs come easily and its a good time.
I can't say I can really compare it to old school, because I personally feel that is the worst movie I've ever seen.
but as much as I love ben stiller, he SERIOUSLY needs to take a long break otherwise his career might go the way of adam sandler (or, at least the way I see adam sandlers career.)
