Two acquaintances of mine (from my Wright State days) have a new film being shown on PBS tonight and tomorrow night (June 21-22, 9-11pm) called A Lion in The House.

It took them nine years to complete the film, which deals with pediatric cancer patients at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

The film has won numerous awards after debuting at Sundance earlier this year.

Julia and Steve live in Yellow Springs.

I've totally got this set up to be Tivo-ed.   It sounds like it will be a fascinating film.   I worked at Children's doing psychological research with pediatric cancer patients for about a year in the mid-90's, and it's an amazing place.

part of me wants to see this. part of me doesn't

on a different note, steve was a classmate of mine in grade school/high school. it's wonderful to see the A/V geek ( i mean that in the nicest way, btw) live his dream and get some acclaim besides.
i've got some fun (and funny) memories about  us and other friends going to the all night Beatle film fests at the old Dabel Cinema.good times...

Damn I miss the Dabel! I went to those Beatle film fests too!  Did you ever go to the Pink Floyd laser thing they did there? I think it was just before it closed...

( I miss Renaissance too)

I miss the Renaissance more than the Dabel.... but I have many great memories at both.

(sigh) the good ol' days.

Assuming we're both referring the Renaissance at Dayton Art Institute...

no, i didn't see the floyd laser show, but i did get to see Tommy there when it first came out.

aaah, the days of sneaking in Mickey's Big Mouths and rolling the empties down the aisle.   \Cheesy/

and yeah, Renaissance was the place to go for hard to find music, if you could put up with that crotchety guy that owned the place. the original music nazi.

I've had this movie marked down in my palm pilot calendar for months. I will be seeing this over the weekend when I get home. My fiance is recording it for me. I figured I'm going to have trouble keeping it together during it, so better to lose it in front of her rather than the guy I'm living with in Columbus during the week.

Good plan Robbie, you'll lose it more than once. I was fine until they showed the Mom holding her infant/toddler who was receiving chemo (when they were talking about families moving in with the kids). My daughter was asleep in my arms at that moment and I couldn't keep it together. It always amazes me how much a child can withstand, they're so resilient and full of hope. I can't wait for part two tonight, this is a fantastic documentary--bittersweet, but fantastic.

I thought it was really well done...  I watched the first hour and tivoed the rest to watch tonight before the other half.  I think it showed what these families go through without being to tearjerky... like the older kid joking about the living will, not wanting his parents to be able to pull the plug... bittersweet.

WOW. Just wow. I cried through most of the second half lastnight. The people at children's are freakin' amazing.

I missed this thread the first go-through. I saw half of the program (didn't know it was a 2 parter) and thought it was excellent.  More than anything, I remember the snow- one of the parents had to get to the hospital quickly and there was a storm going on. Something about those minutes was really touching: the urge to make it to the hospital and not be too late, or wondering if not going would be alright, that it was another day, everything was going to continue on the same.

The filmmakers did a great job, and it was a tough story to tell.

I kinda wish I had only seen the first part. The second part was very difficult to watch.

I'm glad they won the emmy. It was well deserved.
