Title: The Feedback song by Radiohead
Post by: clemsonfan on October 26, 2006, 12:05:04 PM
Ok, I've decided that I'm going to do a mini torturethon since I can't do a full one. I'm just doing it to see if I can make it through two hours of listening to a song I hate. I'm not sure what the title to the song is but it's that song off of OK Comuter with all the feedback noise in it. By the way, OK Computer is one of the worst albums of all time.

I'll do this from 9:15-11:15 on Friday, October 27th. I don't have to babysit for those 2 hours.

That's "Karma Police".  I thought you were going to take a nap during that time?

If Radiohead did release a song called "The Feedback Song", it'd probably be pretty good.

I guess I'm retarded, because I immediately

A) assumed that Radiohead had a song called "The Feedback Song" that I wasnt familiar with

B) thought she was referring to "Airbag" after I continued reading

C) noticed that the outer sides of my eyes were slanted upward, the bridge of my nose flattened, and that my mouth was held open because of my large protruding tongue

I know it's "Karma Police", because we used to listen to CDs at bedtime... one night that particular song came up and she nearly jumped out of the bed to get the remote and skip that CD altogether following the end of Karma Police.... and ever since then I try to slip in listening to Radiohead and I get comments like "well, where's the feedback?" or "that song's not as bad as that feedback song".

But that weeeoooohwoooowooooo-weeeoooohwoooowooooo bit would be extremely annoying when trying to sleep.  Or to listen to for two hours.

My first post ever on woxy.com was when I started a thread titled "Does anyone else hate Radiohead?"

Radiohead was the first band Butter and I disagreed on. He really loves them. I only like "Creep" and "Fake Plastic Trees". I'm not a fan of concept albums in general either, so that combination makes OK Computer rather horrid to me.

Exactly. One of the reasons I may have developed such an intense hatred of this song may be just that. I remember many a night getting woken up by that part and then the harsh static/feedback sound at the end. Damn you Thom Yorke! Damn you for repeatedly disturbing my sleep 9 years ago!

Shocked by all this as I love that album and song. Radiohead to me is like Jack White: they just can't do much wrong.

But I'm glad we have different opinions on here. I say if you hate it, then go for it!

I'm loaded up and ready to go, too. I'm warming up by listening to "Fake Plastic Trees". I have no idea why I'd choose to prepare for listen to the same Radiohead song over and over by listening to a different Radiohead song, but there you go.

Well, here we go. The main difference is that I actually like the song I'm playing on an endless loop for the next two hours. I wonder if I'll still be singing along and swaying at the end, or if I'll just be rocking back and forth in a catatonic state.

Prepare for feedback...

Ok, here I go. It's my first listen to this song in many many years. I will say that the beginning is sort of relaxing. It's almost like Thom really wants to soothe you to sleep and then once you're there Bam! He's going to wake you up so violently that you want to hurt someone.

Here it comes.........The music is starting to speed up now. There's a tiny almost undectectablt bit of distortion in the background. That's your first sign that Thom is here to fuck with you. No more Mr. Nice Thom, here comes evil weird eye Thom.

God, make that crap stop. The ending really grates on me.

The last couple of plays have actually flown by. The song is almost quickly receding into the background. Perhaps I've found something that my ADD is actually good for?

Even the ending doesn't really bother me. Although I have stopped singing along. Of course, as soon as I say that, I starting singing again.

I must say, though, the first time I finished, and "Karma Police" started right back up again, that kinda threw me for a loop. Although it was nice not to have to hear iTunes go right into "Fitter Happier" for once. Oh, how I loathe that song. Every time someone plays "Fitter Happier", Stephen Hawking kills a kitten.

My friend just called and I had to explain the torturethon to her.

"It sounds like you are in a bar."
"Nope. I'm just listening to this song on a continuos loop for 2 hours."
"Why?"
"Just because."
"What song is it?"
"Karma Police by Radiohead"
"Who?"
"Radiohead. They had some popular songs in the 90's"
"Never heard of them."

Radiohead rules.
Your friend drools.

You know I went and saw Radiohead in summer 2003.  I was extremely surprised at how well their music translated into a live show. I was expecting it to be a terrible transition, but instead the speakers were thumping and the crowd was revelling in the outstanding experience. I even got to see them play "Creep," which has that awesome cher-chunk cher-chunk which might be the greatest non-notes ever written into a rock song. I totally expected a very visible and big motion going into those, but instead it was a quick flick of the wrist and then a long motion downward.  I was in awe.

This has nothing to do with your song. But I thought I'd share.

I tried synching up the YouTube video to the song playing on my iTunes. I was off by about a second. It was driving me crazy seeing Thom Yorke's mouth not lining up with the words coming out of the iTunes, so I guess I'll try again.

Karma police, arrest this man, he talks in maths
He buzzes like a fridge, hes like a detuned radio
Karma police, arrest this girl, her hitler hairdo, is making me feel ill
And we have crashed her party
This is what you get, this is what you get
This is what you get, when you mess with us

Karma police, I've given all I can, its not enough
I've given all I can, but were still on the payroll
This is what you get, this is what you get
This is what you get, when you mess with us
And for a minute there, I lost myself, I lost myself
And for a minute there, I lost myself, I lost myself

For a minute there, I lost myself, I lost myself

This is my 14th time listening to this song. Everytime I have the sweet millisecond of silence after the horrible feedback, the fucking song starts back up again.

My eyes are starting to water a tiny bit and my body is getting achey for no apparent reason. I have a headache and I feel like I'm getting sick to my stomach. Thankfully I have only 45 more minutes of this crap. I don't know how you all listened to the same music for 8-9 hours in a row.

So it looks like we're on pace for 28 consecutive listens of Karma Police by the time this is over. Luckily, I remembered to pause my Audioscrobbler submissions before I started. The question is, will I remember to unpause when I'm done.

On my second try, I managed to link up the YouTube video and the iTunes song perfectly. It's the type of video that I would do, if I ever got in the business of making music videos. Which means that now I can't do that one, or else everyone would accuse me of ripping off Radiohead.

What does this mean, Thom? I simply can't understand what you're going for here. He talks in maths. So does he literally talk in maths? Does he going around spouting algebraic equations or chemical equations.

I'm picturing him going up to a stranger and saying "PV=NRT" or "a2+b2=c2"

If he does do that, then by all means arrest that man.

Does he also buzz like the ending of this song? Don't arrest him, he needs to go to a group home.

Fun Karma Police facts (courtesy Wikipedia):

Karma Police's highest UK chart position was No. 8...then again, Radiohead isn't exactly in the single-making business

Before OK Computer came out, Radiohead toured the US, supporting Alanis Morrisette(!). It is not known whether Paul Shaffer actually played piano to accompany the band when they performed Karma Police on the Late Show with David Letterman, or if he just air-pianoed it like I've been doing for the past 20 minutes.

The line "Karma police, arrest this girl, her Hitler hairdo, is making me feel ill" was orginally "Karma police, arrest this girl, she stares at me, as if she owns the world"

Since OK Computer is a concept album portraying a dystopian future where computers, robots and people live side-by-side (and the machines quite possibly might have the upper hand), the Karma Police appear to be some futuristic, thought-reading law enforcement agency. Which would mean that Thom Yorke is a narc.

I have to admit, the song is starting to wear on me. At the beginnig, it was easy peasy. In fact, I thought about keep going beyond the two hours because I wasn't feeling any ill effects at all. Good job you guys! Another $1 for the foundation from me.

Not really, I just didn't want 30 playings of Radiohead in my profile.

It's not that I haven't been using AS, it's just that I haven't been listening to music on my laptop.

Shocked by all this as I love that album and song. Radiohead to me is like Jack White: they just can't do much wrong.

I think when Jack White started dressing and doing his hair like Michael Jackson, that was something he did wrong.

Ha! Agreed
Dude's a creep...he's a wierdo

12 years later, she kinda likes this song now.  Except the end.  Still hates the end.

Unless she's lying to me, which is possible.
