Title: Fave Christmas movies
Post by: Poolio on November 26, 2010, 06:56:51 PM
(Hope I'm not repeating, was too lazy to search)

As I sit here with a Great Lakes' Christmas ale and a holiday movie on the tv, I wonder... What are your favorite Christmas movies?
Now they may no necessarily be Christmas movies per se, but what you watch when the weather turns cold and the Christmas lights go up.

Here's mine (in no particular order):

Scrooged - still funny after all these years.
The Muppet Christmas Carol - I watch this every year as I decorate the house and at least 3 more times before X-mas.
Desk set - Not a Christmas movie but I wish my workplace Christmas parties were as cool as the one in this movie.
White Christmas - Bing Crosby *and* Danny Kaye? Sign me up.
MST3K's Santa Claus conquers the Martians and Santa Claus episodes - Blasphemous and hilarious.
Love Actually - Natch.
Meet me in St. Louis - A great year-round movie but especially great during the holidays. Judy Garland and Margaret O'Brien at their sweetest.

Oh and what am I watching now? MST3K Santa Claus.

Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol and A Charlie Brown Christmas. It doesn't get better than Vince Guaraldi for Christmas.

It doesn't get better than Vince Guaraldi and those Rankin claymation shows for Christmas.

Agreed and expounded.

I've not seen it in years, but I really liked that Bloom County Christmas show.  Something about Opus' wish to fly.

White Christmas
Meet me in St. Louis
Love Actually
The Muppets Christmas Carol
Emmit Otter's Jugband Christmas
How the grinch stole Christmas (the animated one)

The kids require us to watch the "shrek the halls" when it's on

I can't believe no one has brought up the best Christmas movie of all time yet, Die Hard.  It's the only Christmas movie I actually look forward to watching!

I had totally forgotten about that one! It'll probably never air again but it was adorable and goofy.

A wish for wings that work! I love that show!

It's about a New Year's Eve Party rather than anything to do with Christmess, but hands down my fave is the wonderful "Party, Party", a comedic masterpiece most Americans seem oblivious about despite it having one of THE best soundtracks ever... The Clash, Costello, Bowie, etc, et-fucking-cetera

Backed up by "A Christmas Story" which, as if to return the compliment, I had never EVER heard of before I spent my first crimble here with MK but have now seen countless times every season.

I do like "Love Actually", but moreso because the bird from "Gavin & Stacey" shows off her shirt spuds in it.

The Nightmare Before Christmas - although...I've only seen it once.

Elf is pretty funny, although I don't want to watch it a lot (except for, you know, the hottie).

Same for Fred Claus.

Emmit Otter's Jugband Christmas

I hadn't thought of this one in years!

I do love the Grinch (animated) and Love Actually, too.

Emmit Otter is the best.

Emmit Otter is the best.
x1,000,000!!!!
I could listen to Emmit and his ma sing all season long.

No love for BAD SANTA? It's oh-so-naughty and nice!
A CHRISTMAS STORY is required viewing every year with my family.
LOVE ACTUALLY is something I usually watch around this time when I'm trying to get in the Christmas spirit.
ELF is something I watch with my Belles when we make cookies. You haven't REALLY seen it till you've watched it with my friend, Gwynner.

I'd love nothing more than to make cookies and watch ELF with Lando and Gwynner.  That's one of my favorite holiday jams.

Everyone has already mentioned my faves.  I also always watch Wizard of Oz when I'm wrapping gifts, since it always comes on around the holidays.

I never, ever miss the claymation specials.

My sister and I *always* watch Love, Actually together while the dudes watch Die Hard.

I'm a sucker for Love, Actually as well.  Yes, I've already surrendered my "Dude Card".  We watched it on Thanksgiving at Julie's parents, it was the edited TV version but it'll do.  Naturally the Martin Freeman story line was virtually non-existent they just kind of showed up at the end in the airport scene... if you hadn't seen the non-edited version you'd wonder what the heck that "we're finally gonna shag" line was all about.  I think the Colin Firth story line is my favorite.  Something about people being insulted in a language they don't speak is just so awesome.

I haven't seen it in years but I also love that more recent Muppet's Christmas special where Fozzie starts doing stand-up with the snowman, and the Swedish Chef tries to cook Camilla and then Big Bird and Robin finds the Fraggles... cornball, but awesome.

Here's mine (in no particular order):

Scrooged - still funny after all these years.

I still enjoy Scrooged as well, but man it has not aged well.

I enjoy A Christmas Carol, the one with George C. Scott in it as Scrooge.  He overacts his way through it all, and while it does drag a bit in the middle, it is a lot of fun especially the last 20 minutes when he has his "come to Jesus" moment.

YES! DIE HARD. Definitely an all-time favorite CHRISTMAS movie.
If you don't think of it as a Christmas movie, you ain't watchin' it right.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

Can't believe I forgot this one.  I'm pretty sure my sister and I could recite the entire movie.

Yeah, i think all my faves are mentioned too.

Elf (thinking of the maple syrup on the spaghetti thing is cracking me up right now)
A Christmas Story (Classic)

I could be classy and say that I like to watch It's a Wonderful Life, but if I'm being honest, I don't think I've ever been able to watch through the whole thing in one sitting.

That's part of the charm for me. Although, Home Alone (another Christmas movie) has definitely not aged well... it's just awful. It was funny when I was 14 but not now...

Oh and Scrooged is on AMC tonight!

And tomorrow night. And the night after that. And again the night after that.

I guess they were inspired by Groundhog Day.

Love Actually sucks ass.  I don't think it sucks because I'm a man.  I think it sucks because it truly, undeniably sucks.  Other people simply give it a pass for sucking.

Although I do kind of want to watch it again.  I have a feeling that movie will be 100x as amusing if I can envision Kiera Knightley as actually being a zombie, instead of merely possessing a zombie-like acting range. Like a Pride and Prejudice and Zombies reboot.  Come to think of it, Kiera Knightley was in Pride and Prejudice as well, wasn't she?

And Andrew Lincoln (the dude in love with her in the film) loves to kill zombies. Well, after he goes through their wallets first.

When we watched L,A the other day I kept thinking he seemed familiar and then I realized he was Rick from The Walking Dead.  Crazy.

Dude, you're doing it wrong.  You don't watch LA for that skinny little hag Kiera Knightly...you watch it for Martine McCutcheon.

Didn't notice this until just now. Assuming you're referring to the cab driver, that's Buster Poindexter!

Me too. I associate it with it's predecessors (Shop around the corner and In the good old summertime) which forgives some sins but it's a cute, well-done remake of the story.

I think I am going to have to add "Holiday affair (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0041473/Holiday affair)" to the list. I'd never seen it before but watched it on TCM tonight. Sure, you know how it's going to work out but it's sweet and the kid is super cute... plus, it is hard to resist Robert Mitchum in a romantic role.

I saw where a guest or bot was viewing this thread and thought what the hell, let's bring it back to life.  My pics:

A Christmas Carol (1951, with Alastair Sim as Scrooge)
Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol (haven't seen it in ages but loved it as a kid)
Santa Claus Conquers The Martians (so bad it's good--Pia Zadora's best acting; too bad she didn't stay 7 years old)
Beyond Tomorrow (1940; very offbeat for the time, but an intriguing film)

Ooo, I forgot about this post.

I need to add "It happened on Fifth Avenue" to this list. It's become one of my absolute favorites.
