1. DAHMER - 01/01/11 - I thought I wanted to watch this because I had heard that Jeremy Renner was fantastic in the film and it is the reason that Katherine Bigelow knew about him when she started work on THE HURT LOCKER. Renner is definitely effective in the role but I just couldn't watch it. It was too disturbing for me and I don't disturb too easily. What a craptastic way to kick off 2011.

1 • Dinner for Schmucks
Script for morons. Steve Carell plays Steve Carell in yet another movie that Steve Carrell should have been let nowhere near. 15 minutes of my life wasted.

It got pretty hammered by the critics, so you aren't alone. Apparently it gets a little better at the end, and perhaps Zack Galfinaikas does some good stuff with his character, but regardless it still stunk... according to everything I read anyhow.

From what I've heard the dinner itself is awesome but is only a tiny part of the movie and the rest of it sucks.

2. 28 DAYS LATER - 01/10/11 - dvd from library - I finally got around to trying to watch this (you know I hate zombies) and it didn't feel necessary at this point. But, I can see right away what was pilfered from the film to make THE WALKING DEAD. So, that's good to know. Plus, (PERV ALERT) Cillian was nekkid. But, he's almost always nekkid. Oh, and I do LOVE Naomie Harris.
However, FAST ZOMBIES + ZOMBIE OVERLOAD = turned it off after 30 minutes.

1. Get Shorty

Didn't want to abandon it but our DVR decided otherwise. It's not like I haven't seen it half a dozen times anyway, but to be denied after investing 70 minutes in it sucks. It's got one of my all-time favorite soundtracks too.

I see what Dan meant about Hell Toupee abandoning us.  Odd.

Anyway, I have one for a change.

1. HALLOWEEN II (2009) - Uh, this was complete shit.  Who ever decided to let Rob Zombie helm a major studio picture, let alone two of these?  I never saw his take on the first one, but I made it through about 20 minutes of this... I think when I gave it up was when Dr. Johnny Fever showed up as some guy named "Uncle Meat"?  I mean, really?  Seriously?  Jesus Christ.  I did fast forward to the end, so I didn't completely give up, but the end was just as stupid as the rest of the movie would suggest.

The original is basically ONLY the dinner and it's a lot better.  I've seen both.

1. HALLOWEEN II (2009)

2. WITHNAIL AND I

I don't know what happened, but I fell dead asleep during this on Thursday morning, and then when I woke up, it looked like nothing much had happened with 22 minutes left in the movie.  And I had to go pick up a sick Alex from school anyway, so it was a good thing I took the day off.  I don't think I'll revisit this one, even after the exceedingly odd opening half hour.

4. SLEEPING DOGS LIE - 04/27/11 - Netflix steaming - This is THAT movie that was written by Bobcat Goldthwait. The one about the girl and the dog and...welll....yeah. Anyway, I was always curious about this movie but I couldn't get past the first 20 minutes. Every character annoyed me in the film. Nothing felt authentic. Don't watch it.

Hahahaha... as if a sequel to one of the worst sports fan movies ever wasn't bad enough, the Russian from the Direct TV ads ("Opulence, I has it") showed up 15 minutes in leaving any shred of credibility to float in the ether. A massive own goal.

5. LOST IN AUSTEN - Netflix DVD - I thought I would enjoy this because I like the main actress (Jemima Rooper) and Gemma Arteron is also in it. But, it got on my nerves VERY quickly (REALLY!?!?! She's wearing trousers and a black leather jacket and no one thinks she's a bit odd in the 1700s!?!?!?) and I had to shut it off and mail it back. BAD. I think it was originally a tv mini-series on the BBC.

Ridiculous, CGI-filled melodrama. Watched ten minutes of it and hit the "delete" button. Cannot believe that the BBC has been reduced to putting out tripe like this.

Bobcat told one of THE funniest jokes I have EVER heard at last years Brew Ha-Ha. I was there with Lu and Lunarbee and I don't think any of us stopped laughing - and laughing HARD - for at least a quarter of an hour afterwards. Unfortunately it is a joke that has to be told and loses all its power if it was written out.

I agree, it was epically funny, and is definitely more of a joke to hear than one to read. I chuckle now just thinking about it.

Found a version of it on youtube, but it wasn't executed as well as the way he told it at Brew Ha-ha.

It was the 10pm amgtv movie and the small fry decided to be wide awake just then, but they never show goods movies. They are always movies that make you say "Who is that guy/girl? Weren't they in something we've seen somewhere?". I ended up watching masterpiece mystery instead.

3) Following

This was an early Christopher Nolan film, so I thought it would be good.  It was the worst clichι of every indie film ever made.  Bad acting, over wordy and unwieldy dialogue, black and white, weird camera angles.  Overall, just dull.

He only had a shank. I was thinking he would probably be the first to get got. Plus, he wasn't Boydy enough for me. :)

BONUS POINTS for having Mahershalalhashbaz Ali in the cast. I wanted to fast-forward to the end of the credits to see his name all typed out. It always makes me happy.

Really? What was there to enjoy here?

I got through about 25 minutes of it, until thewoman who was supposed to be pregnant jumped approximately 70-80 feet through the air onto the tin roof of an abandoned building which then collapsed underneath her.

This was after the farcical scene with the train followed by the half-mile or so plunge into the river where NO-ONE got even scathed.

Oh, and THAT was after the utterly stupid scene with the prison bus at the beginning

and THAT was after I was enough or a tosser to hire it from the library on the strength of "Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift" which was a complete classic of its genre.

Well, that's all what makes it great. Of course, it's all absurd and I suppose I figured you knew that going in. It's like watching a movie knowing that there's going to be lots of boobies and hot girls, but no plot, and you watch it simply for the boobies and girls.

In this case you're watching it for the absurdity, the action, the silliness of the plot, the overly muscled guys and completely unreal model girls, and the really really crazy final scene.

Thanks, I understand that. Allow me to rephrase my question. Do the watchers/abandoners of said movies never see a preview/commercial, the lead actors/actresses, or read about the movie prior to watching? How many movies do you watch per week or year? I can only remember doing it once recently (forgot the movie name thankfully).

Give em hell Wolverine.  I'm of the same mindset.  I typically don't go out of my way to watch a movie if I think I'm not going to like it.  Save me the waste of time.  If it's on TV and I "abandon" it, I chalk it up to channel surfing.

That's why you won't see me in this thread.  Except to berate it ;)

5 minutes = channel surfing
20 minutes = abandonment

I'll give almost any film a chance. I know the obvious ones to avoid. I used to watch films for a living.
