Title: Words with Friends
Post by: Ella Minnow Pea on October 07, 2011, 09:47:31 PM
So I'm playing a game against Dan. He played a word for 131 points this afternoon.  :o My phone wasn't even able to display all 3 digits!

I don't think there's a chance I can come back to win this one. I'm just trying to stay within 100 points now.

I love Words With Friends. It's the greatest thing ever. Okay, not ever, but you know what I mean.

Play me! Anyone! Username: Danimal061

I tend to win a lot, but not always. And people who like to play, like drougan (from woxy) eventually get tired of losing. My brother in law is good and we split against each other, but he doesn't play much. Plus, when you're playing someone who's really good...those games get highly defensive and then become frustrating/boring.

I suspect Ella will be a legit opponent, although I'm pretty sure I've got this game wrapped up. That move (which was my best move ever, and she was essentially screwed regardless of what she played) was definitely my highest single scoring move of my career. I'd have 109 and 120 and so on, but never 131.

I could have decimated a cousin that I was playing against last week, so I held back in that game. She just wasn't strategic with her plays. Even when I didn't try, I was still getting 30+ point words. Hopefully I'll have better letters in our rematch, which should start soon!

I have resisted starting Words with friends but mostly because I know that once I start I won't be able to stop.

Hello, my name is Stephanie and I have an addictive personality.  ;D

Well... I just learned something new!

You should totally play. And play me. I need opponents.

I caved. It'll give me something to do while I am at my Parent's house this week. I'm Poolio76.

Oh hey... Trixi?

So, yeah, I refused to add the facebook connection to WWF but finally caved late last week, so I didn't know until like 4 days ago that we were playing each other. Just thought I'd apologize for not realizing this.

Oops! And sorry for killing you. You were labeled as User564321681651564 or whatever, and therefore just a nameless/faceless opponent. :)

Dear words with friends,

"June" is totally an acceptable word. Now quit giving me nothing but consonants!

In the real world, yes. But, apparently not in Words with friends.

Those of you I normally play WWF with....I'm not seeing any games anymore.  I had 5 going and they're all gone.  It also won't let me start any new ones regardless of who I choose to start a game with, so if you're still seeing the games we were playing, that's why I haven't been taking my turns.

And of course, right after I posted, I decided to uninstall/reinstall the app.  And now I see all games again.  ???

Yeah, I've played in a couple tournaments from another board and that seems to happen to people all the time. They think they are waiting on the other guy, while the other guy is waiting on them. After it's been long enough that one begins to think "how come no one else is playing" a simple reinstall usually fixes the problem.

No idea why, though.

I was able to play "japery" in Hanging with Friends today. With a triple word multiplier it earned me 60 points. My opponent was not a Woxian, so they didn't guess it.

That is awesome! Another word to keep in mind for "j." :D

I am WoxyJen if anyone wants to play. I am slowly figuring out how this works so play me while you still can if you want to win. ;)

Does this from our 2005 Scrabble tournament match ring a bell?

Quote
Dan
Final Score: 260

Butter
Final Score: 377

I think we both did well, but not as well as rva and trixi, who were apparently declared co-champs after failing to find a time to play the final.

Jeeez. No, it doesn't ring a bell. I remember playing you once online when I wasn't good at this game and I actually had my g/f at the time helping me out. You beat me on the final move b/c I couldn't find a place for my Q (or Z?), which meant that you beat two people by yourself.

I do NOT remember that tournament at all. I must be getting old.

The good news for you is that I am amazing at WWF. :)

Well, in our first six games or so I'm pretty sure we were 3-3, give or take. Looking through the last ten scores I have, I am 3-1 against you. But hell...you've got a solid set up in the current game. So... what ever.

You and Kristen (...I'm so embarrassed, but I think Kristen is velouria? I should know this.) are my favorite opponents.

I've been mostly playing against one girl I found randomly...  We have been playing for a few months now...  most of the time we have two games going at once.

Then I recently started playing with a co-worker.  My GF pretty much won't play me anymore.

And every once in a while I play a random opp just so I can smoke someone...  I'd have to say most random opps are pretty bad.  The girl I've been playing for months is right at my skill level.  Pretty fun.  Usually comes down to last 2-3 words.

I'll give you a tip... using an S on a word like DUELS only helps if that S gets you something like a double word score or the word wouldn't be playable without it. Instead you just threw it on at the end, which in that instance should have gotten you an extra 1 point since it was on a DL score. An S is worth more than 2 points...almost always.

Add that to the fact that it wasn't even an S...it was a blank, which meant you got no points for it and just threw away your blank. Blanks are the key to getting bingos! You should hold on to that blank a few turns if nothing else.

Just some strategery for ya.

We started pretty evenly, but since then it's been a little lopsided.

Of course, if you get 3 bingos in one game it turns the tables.

Playing with you is like fucking playing with an expert bot.  You leave anything open, one little triple letter or triple word score for ANYTHING, next turn that's a 60 point turn.

But it's good.  I am a glutton for punishment.

Science words are great.  I've played "bromidic" and "taurine" for bingos in the recent past.  Not so obvious words, unless you know your science!

BTW, meant to give velouria a shout for running 3 bingos in a row on me a few games back.  That was pretty impressive.  And I still only lost by 30-40 or so, so it didn't make me feel terrible.

Yeah, I tried playing a word (can't recall which one) and WWF said no. I went to play on a game with a different person and what had that person played? The word WWF said "no" to me on. Serious bugs in this app. I don't understand why Greek words are okay, I can use Ole but no French words and it sometimes accepts proper nouns (but not for me, for other people). I still enjoy the challenge of the game but the shine has certainly worn off for me.

I can't speak to that, that 'i' makes it a whole different word.  Not so with Sulphur and colour and other words of that ilk.

BTW, meant to give velouria a shout for running 3 bingos in a row on me a few games back.  That was pretty impressive.  And I still only lost by 30-40 or so, so it didn't make me feel terrible.

I don't know how many of you are familiar with Scramble With Friends, but there's a power-up that gives you some extra seconds if you find a certain three words. The words it just gave me were Anal Exits Stool. You could not make this shit up (pun definitely intended.)

Did you waste your extra seconds?
Was it a crappy game?
Did you flush your opportunity to win down the drain?

I'm not the world gold medalist at this game, but I like to think I'm decent enough. So I started keeping track.

I'm not trying to rub it in to either of my favorite opponents (I swear, I'm not). But I have some stats:

Since March 6th, 2012

Dan Vs. Veloria
Wins: 25
Losses: 11
Draws: 2
Dan avg score: 379
Veloria avg score: 364

Dan Vs. Butter
Wins: 22
Losses: 16
Draws: 1
Dan avg score: 392
Butter avg score: 384

So I win more than I lose, but I definitely lose a lot. And both are good competitors.

Nice, I didn't know you could access stats!  I need to get some for against C-fan... did you just keep track of that yourself, or is there a site for that?

Sorry, but I just kept them myself. Stats are the one thing that the game desperately needs and I really feel like it would be a simple bit of programming. But alas, there's nothing so I just did it myself.

For those of you I was playing, sorry I didn't keep up.  An upgrade at work made my life crazy for a while.

Is there a way you can look at older than the last 10 games?

Just saw an advert for the Words With Friends board game, from Zynga and Hasbro. Hasbro!

It's like when they remade the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland to tie in with the films, only more mind-boggling.
