I never figured it out since I don't live in Cincy - what's MOTR?

It's a smallish club downtown that opened last year. The guy who books has been booking for decades in the alternative / indie genre and is also a leader of the Midpoint Music Fest. Always free shows.

I did not think I was going to like the new SSLYBY, but I did.  I'd go see those guys for free.  Ought to be a pretty mellow show, which is about the only show I can handle nowadays.

Of course the 8 hour drive probably makes it a little difficult.

$7 isn't free, but that's how much their show in Richmond on Friday night will be.

They're more of a personal favorite than a jaw-dropper for me, I suppose. Saw 'em in Columbia, MO in '05, which kinda marked my return to the concert scene. I recognized a GBV cover they did and shouted out "yay Ohio!" after the tune. Which brought standard hipster indifference to my enthusiasm from the surrounding audience. :p
Talked to 'em for a bit after the show. Guitarist wanted to know if I could score some weed.

Coming to MOTR...

AC/DC !!!!

No not the band...  the pinball machine.  actually it's already there.  Or so I've heard.  I haven't made it out to see it yet.  It's the latest pinball machine from Stern pinball.

I can't wait to play it...  I think we need to start some pinball leagues at MOTR.

http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/print-edition/2013/03/08/motr-owners-to-revive-old-theater-as.html

Seven nights a week, live, original music flows from Over-the-Rhine’s MOTR Pub on Main Street, where bands from Cincinnati and across the country play free gigs for crowds of up to 150 people. Most nights – even on weekdays, depending on the act – the pub quickly fills to capacity.

But as a band’s following at MOTR would grow, such as for Buffalo Killers or Pomegranates, space for concert-goers shrunk at the 2-year-old pub. So Dan McCabe and Chris Schadler, the owner/operators of MOTR (short for Music in Over-the-Rhine), plan to change that, bringing a larger, 100-year-old nearby building back ...

It is/was Greg's Antiques on the NE corner of 14th and Main. This is going to be very cool. Catch an early show at the Woodward and hop across the street afterward to catch another at MOTR.

His new cd is coming soon (tomorrow maybe?). From what I've heard it is sounding pretty good.

Apparently it's true--on Friday February 21, 2014!  I think that's pretty much a must see for me.  I love how MOTR gets national level acts for no cover.  I've seen Jon Langford and Skull Orchard and Scrawl (twice) there.  Missed Mark Eitzel and Freedy Johnston due to work/other commitments.  Keep it up, MOTR Pub!

8/22/2014--Bob Log III
9/10/2014--Jad Fair and Danielson

Log is probably the closest thing around to the late Hasil Adkins.  However, I saw Hasil's...shall we say..."different" performance at the old SGH in 1999 and I hope Log comes off better than that.

Jad is currently involved with a record company called Joyful Noise--the name sure fits his music.  Supposedly Half Japanese are going to be releasing their first album in over a decade shortly.  Hope they tour and come to Cincinnati, or at least a nearby city.

I saw Bob Log III at the Monolith Festival (RIP) at the Red Rocks in Denver in 2007 or 2008, and that surely is a performance I will not forget anytime soon. Memorable. I had no idea he was still touring out there. If you haven't seen him, I'd recommend it. But once was good enough for me. Great memories.

Totally unrelated to this or this thread, but my daughter's band Leggy will be playing at the Northside Tavern this coming Friday...

Sure wish Beverly was on the weekend, but I might have to venture out on a work night for this one. Love their LP.

I am getting my wish! Beverly is playing MOTR on Friday, March 25! Yippee!

Monday May 16, 2016--Kid Congo Powers and the Pink Monkey Birds.  Kid and crew played a great set at MOTR during Midpoint 2014.  Too bad this is on a Monday...

MK, I don't know how you can do it, on a weekday night. I mean, Plattenbau prob won't come on until 11 or 11:30 (if not later).

Props to you! I just can't do that anymore, not even for my own daughter's band Leggy. Not while I'm still working anyway...

And Lunarbee is def a blast from the past!

It helps that I live only a short walk away. Plus, it isn't very likely that Plattenbau will be back here anytime soon.

That being said, I'm still contemplating a road trip to Bloomington on a Sunday night to see Suuns, depending on whether or not Fourthisto and I hit up the Athens show the night before.

Now that my back has healed enough for me to attend SRO shows again, I'm making up for lost time. :)

November 10, 2016--Bill Matheny and the Strange Constellations

Bill and crew played as part of The Paranoid Style this past Saturday at The Woodward.  TPS mainstays Elizabeth Nelson and Tim Bracy let Bill do one of his own songs and it was rather impressive.  I'm going if at all possible.  Matheny is opening for Frontier Folk Nebraska.  I wish it was the other way around.

Because if they were headlining, they would play longer.

Unfortunately I might not make the Sonic Avenues show (which I am super bummed about) because I'll most likely be at Ubahn.

Speaking of MOTR, the Andy Pratt scheduled to perform there on June 5 is not the guy of Avenging Annie fame but a younger performer with the same name.  Yours in accuracy, DRJ.

Several outstanding shows coming up:

6/22 yes, TONIGHT: Surfer Blood
I love those guys and it's a darn shame that this is on a weeknight, and hence impossible for me.

6/24 Sarah Shook & the Disarmers
I saw her at the Nelsonville Music Festival a few weeks ago. Outstanding country. And you're not gonna mess with that girl...

Still kicking myself for missing this show (it had BOYTOY opening)

Having seen BOYTOY twice last weekend, I admit I am in swoons about this band. An absolute mystery to me they are not bigger yet.

Not as amazing as when he played Midpoint in '14 (I think that's when it was) but really, really good.  His own songs hold their own with the Cramps and Gun Club covers (I saw him with the latter band at the Jockey Club back in the day).  Not just punchy rock and roll, either--toward the end of the set was a long, slower instrumental that worked quite well.

The gig was really a co-headlining one, since Slim Cessna's Auto Club played for 51 minutes instead of the usual 25 to 30.  They were really enjoyable as well.  Guess I have another band to explore in more detail. I'll just add them to the list of 93,887,428 others I need to listen to in more detail.  You never run out of stuff to check out when you're a music fanatic.
