Title: Walk the Moon tour dates
Post by: euro60 on November 16, 2011, 03:45:37 PM
Up-and-coming Cincinnati natives Walk the Moon are truly road warriors. They are in the midst of yet another huge tour, this time with Fitz and the Tantrums. My daughter just saw them this past weekend at the 9:30 Club in DC (sold out, apparently). I'll probably be at the Madison show the day after Thanksgiving (as will be a number of other co-workers). Not sure if I mentioned this but Eli (the guitarist) is the son of one of my partners here in the law firm...

Yeah, good call.  Let's drive all the way from DC to ATL in one day down I-95.

Anyone know of a city off I-95 with a couple of decent clubs we could play at to break up that trip?  Nope.

really fun show tonight at the Madison. The band gave it all, and the crowd responded accordinly. I ran into not_ontheboards (Peter), or more correctly, he saw me and came up to me. Didn't see any other boarders.

That said, what an enjoyable show this was. This band is going places.

If you don't have tickets yet for the Feb 24 show at the Madison (with Young the Giant), fuggetaboutit! It's sold out, as I learned today. If anyone has an extra ticket they'd like to sell, lemme know. Thx!

I was able to score a ticket from some fan who had an extra so didn't have to pay through the nose to get into the show. I have to say, this was one of the more delightful shows I've attended in a while. WTM was the opener, and they put on a super-fun 45 min. set, playing a number of new songs that will appear on their new album (due out in late Spring or early Summer). These guys never fail to bring the energy, and the crowd loved it. Headliner Young the Giant was equally thrilling, to be honest. If I heard the lead singer right, this was their 6th visit to Cincinnati, but the first time as a headliner. Road warriers equal to Walk the Moon, it seems. Great, great show all around.

WTM is doing a FREE set at 7 pm this Saturday at Shake It in celebration of Record Store Day.

The guy at Shake It told me they expect a mob scene. You are fore-warned!  :o

I went (obviously...) and there was a mob scene, but BUT of all the Shake It in-store performances I've seen over the years, this has to rank as one of the very best, and yes one of the most crowded and definitely one of the loudest ever. The band played a full on plugged-in 1 hour set, just like on their regular concerts. Tremendoulsy enjoyable. I was way upfront (as the pic shows). Incidentally, WTM's guitarist shown in the pic is Eli, whose dad is a partner of mine at the law firm...

We stepped out for dinner between Bad Veins and Walk The Moon (planned on going to Melt, but apparently everyone else had the same idea... sigh). We got back 20 minutes early for WTM's set expecting to get near the front. Hah! Still, sounded decent and wasn't too loud where we were. I appreciated the full band playing and the longer setlist. I couldn't believe the line outside and down the block when I left Shake-It. I guess these were people who showed up too late and Shake-It was at capacity...? They were sticking around to get autographs, I think.

Bought a used T-Bone Walker vinyl and the Bad Veins CD, but I was too late for any Record Store Day releases I was interested in.

hmmm, how did I miss that show?

That aside, I picked up the new WTM album (their debut on RCA) the other day at Shake It. It isn't as good as their self-released "i want! i want!" CD from late 2010, but that's just me. The RCA release rehashes 6 songs from that album and adds 5 new songs. But nothing on any CD can compare to the live show.

When I saw WTM at Taste of Cincinnati last May I also had the sense of being very out of place, and I'm only 24. Haha. I don't think it will be quite the same with their expanded fanbase, but I would still expect the show to skew pretty young. Anyway, got the new album. I agree with Euro, the re-recorded songs generally aren't an improvement. The new songs are nice though, even though I already knew most of them... they've been playing Shiver and Tightrope for a year now.

Agreed on all accounts (and I'm not 24, LOL)

That aside, the initial buzz around WTM seems to have subsided, I think. It just took too long to get this album out. It'll be interesting to see where the new album lands on the Billboard 200 when it comes out next Wednesday.

Locally I think you're right, but nationally they pulled the first album and toured non-stop. People got a taste of them in the spring. Summer they release the new album and non-stop touring in the fall should pay off.

I did notice that the album got mostly positive reviews in both Entertainment Weekly (rated "B") and AllMusic.com (4 stars).

The album was 10 on the itunes chart on Tuesday and is currently at 20. I have no idea how that will translate to the Billboard 200 but it's still really impressive.

Maybe at the old folk's home but you would be surprised how much meteoric buzz there is about them in the music-loving major cities. (NYC, LA, Austin, Chicago, etc.) I would not hesitate to call them (Nationally speaking) the most popular band from Cincinnati at the moment.

That was one fun show last night. The place was jumping from the get-go. I got there pretty late, actually only 5 min. or so before WTM came on.

And oh, did I mention it was hot as hell inside...

PS I was really surprised to see that their RCA debut album already has dropped off the Billboard 200 chart only 4 weeks after its release. Wow.

I got there right on time and people were hopping for Bonneville as well. They really pumped up the crowd . . . and did you hear? It. Was. Hot. After just the opener an ambulance had to show up for a girl who passed out. Keep hydrated people. No surprise that Walk The Moon put on a great high energy show. I headed down to MOTR for Empires afterwards.

Man, I give up. I've listened to this album maybe a dozen times, and I still think it's crap.

It's just your basic formulaic but admittedly effective dance-y indie beats, and then some happy bloops thrown on top.  It makes for kind of a happy-dance-y sound but it never goes anywhere.  There's no tension or resolution or organization or even melodies.  It's just like let's throw in all this happy indy noise in at once with no rhyme or reason, just get it all in there.

I feel like it's basically the indie equivalent of Cher Lloyd.  It's just a mess.

The Madison show is sold out, incidentally.

Hard to figure out how many bands are actually on the bill, though. 3? 4? This is what appears on the Madison website:

Quote
Walk The Moon with Family of the Year, The Counter Rhythm Group's 2-year anniversary party, Bad Veins

great show tonight. Bad Veins gave a great 45 min. opening set. Family of the Year, previously unknown to me, really charmed me (picked up their album afterwards). WTM delivered, again. All this for $16? steal of the week!

After they complete their Fall tour on 10/31, they've added one more gig:

Madison Theatre

Play it Forward
Walk The Moon (Performing as Kaleidoscope Spce Tribe), Noah Hunt & the 420 All-Stars, Chakras & the Newbees
Saturday November 2, 2013
6:00 Doors | 7:00 Show - All Ages
$20

This is a charity/fundraiser for something called "Play It Forward".

What Eli's dad tells me is that on rare occasion, WTM performs under that other name and usually it means an all-Talking Heads covers show. That would be pretty awesome actually.

Take the kid, I says!  8)

Not sure when tix go on sale. Imma guessing that this will sell out. In fact, I'm surprised it's at the PCN Pavilion and not at Riverbend proper.
