Title: Spotify Playlists
Post by: jcarwash31 on December 05, 2011, 11:25:24 AM
Post any Spotify playlists here.  I went ahead and created the WOXY users December (http://open.spotify.com/user/jcarwash31/playlist/4FClemWDe0ZgEM0oqSFudU) playlist.  I didn't have much to add, so please add some more stuff.

I added the only song I've downloaded recently. I have been struggling with my musical exposure over the past year or so, so that's all I've got at the moment.

So I think I missed the initial post on woxy about adding tracks. Do we add only new music from the last half of 2011 or any music from 2011 we have discovered?
Title: Re: Spotify Playlists
Post by: luisterpaul on December 06, 2011, 08:03:22 AM
My understanding is it's anything from 2011. No more than five songs per user. (You can always post extras in the next month's list...)
Title: Re: Spotify Playlists
Post by: twentyshots on December 06, 2011, 08:28:22 AM
initially we tried to keep it to the freshest stuff of the previous month but that got harder with so many submissions so it kind of stretched out a little. i've been trying to not exceed 3 months but that doesn't always work.
obviously, availability on spotify plays a part too......

When I first looked at it yesterday, it only had two (that I could see) but now I see 64. Maybe it was a Spotify glitch?

Who wants to start the January playlist?

It doesn't have to be within the last month.  You can really add anything.  We just tend to go with pretty recent stuff.  I've gone back a whole year before.

if it seems like we aren't going to get the usual amount of contributors we could bend the 5 song rule (if we can!)

How do you tell what anyone's numeric ID is (that includes my own - I can't find it anywhere)?  All I see is names everywhere.

How do you tell what anyone's numeric ID is (that includes my own - I can't find it anywhere)?  All I see is names everywhere.

The people with names are people you are friends with on Facebook or have added through Spotify (might not be using the right terms, connected with perhaps?). The playlist shows someone as a number rather than a name to me which means (at least to me) that I am not friends what that person via any platform. Which is why I was asking because I figured the person adding music was a woxian (or randomvillian) and I was curious as to who they were. Perhaps I am the only one who sees the number vs name. ;)

As to finding out your own number, that is a great question. I just tried to find mine and couldn't. I did see something I didn't notice before. What is Spotify social? Is that relatively new? I just noticed in my prefs and option to share via this and I was wondering if I wanted to "uncheck." I have no desire to publish what I am listening to on FB because I find it annoying having my whole feed filled with other people's (no offense).

I just started a new job today and it looks like the only way I can listen to Spotify is to go premium and get it on my phone.  Facebook is also blocked, but Randomville isn't so I can hang out here when I'm bored.

You can download the entire Kids ep if you want to from here:

It's pretty good, but I don't think the rest of it is as good as My Sincerest Apologies.  One thing is for sure, all their songs will bury themselves in your head whether you like them or not, so caveat emptor.

we are kicking all kinds of ass....we are up to 40 tracks and only half way through the month. a lot of excellent stuff on there and yes, i hate to like azealia banks, and there are plenty of reasons to not like that song but it is catchy as hell.
actually, i feel like she is singing in three different manners in that song, two of which i really don't care for but the other, where she basically sounds like a valley girl (do people still say valley girl?), is hard to not fall for because it plays off the cute factor.

if you are paying super close attention you may have noticed i switched out the opening track, grand duchy's white out. the album version is better than the single version that was up first. the former is more of a remix that flows better into errors and trust- not that it's THAT important, but.....yeah.

grand duchy, if you haven't bothered to look into them, are frank black and violet clark's (his wife) efforts. i SO want to like them but dang....it just keeps coming up a little short. they are doing this kind of interesting warholian stuff with their latest album by putting out absurd videos that are more performance than for the songs. and, every now and then they have parts of songs that i really like but it is equally as frustrating, which i guess is the respectful way of saying "bad".
Title: Re: Spotify Playlists

I was digging the Grand Duchy track you put on the list so I checked out the album. About halfway through I was ready for it to be over. I agree there are some interesting moments now and again, but as a whole it's just not working for me.
Title: Re: Spotify Playlists
Post by: twentyshots on April 15, 2012, 08:32:40 AM
i hear ya.
i like the use of the narrator throughout but the songs are just too scattershot. it's perplexing too because frank has such musical output...it's like he just keeps the faucet running and doesn't question quality that much, and yet, pixies will not commit to new material. maybe that's why- nothing will be good enough to qualify but he can continue his creative exorcising with side projects.

anyway, grand duchy's best song to date is fort wayne off their first album and worth a listen.

one of my peeves with spotify is the date that they have after albums. i am listening to a concrete blonde album right now that i know is from 1989 but has (2009) after it, which i do not understand and am too lazy to look up. is that when the album was added to spotify's catalogue? why would i give a shit about that?

I noticed this as well. I added a Ray LaMontagne album the other day. I think Spotify listed it around 1988 (or 1980?). I saw it on wikipedia and it should be around 1996. WTF?

I was relistening to this month's list the other day. Great songs for sure this month!!

From my experience with e-books and such at work, those dates are often the date the album was digitized and put up for sale.

But, yeah, that annoys me too.

the other weird thing is when they have multiple entries for an artist, like:
public image limited
PIL
public image ltd.

the new album is only under one of those....it can be tricky.

growing pains, i guess.

Yeah, that's awkward but I think that is part of their way to make sure no matter how you search you're going to find what you're looking for. We do that in the library world (although in our world you'd be able to find the album under all of those names)... they need to hire a Cataloger.

Consistency is hard to achieve with master data maintenance on that scale, you're going to have that unless there is a (large) team of people to police it.

Besides that, I wouldn't be surprised if they're just using Gracenote data, which I believe is community sourced much like wikipedia.

My guess on the Concrete Blonde album is that it's a 2009 re-release.  No idea what's up with Ray LaMontagne... was he even recording that long ago?  He's probably not even that old.

So I just looked up the dates because I was being pretty arbitrary (and lazy). The date Spotify has for the album "Till the Sun Turns Black" is 1980. Wikipedia says that the album came out 2006. And yeah, I suppose if it has come out in 1980 he could have recorded it but he would have been pretty young. He was born in 1973.

If you go to the sign up page, it says this:

"You need a Facebook account to register for Spotify. If you have an account, just log in below to register. If you don't have a Facebook account, get one by clicking the 'Create an account' link below."

However, on that same page, at the very bottom (you have to scroll down to see it), it says this:

"or

create an account using your e-mail address"

I clicked on that, and was able to sign up.

It's weird because I love the original from the Buzzcocks, but there's something about that Pete Yorn cover that makes me ABSOLUTELY love it. And for the longest time that wasn't available digitally - if you wanted it you had purchase the whole Shrek 2 soundtrack. I would have gladly bought the song but I didn't want the whole album. Suddenly I realized it was on Spotify so I had to add it.

Anyway, I think it's aces.

Explain what you mean, because I think they've had that ability for a long time now. You can stream it via your phone, as well as make playlists available in offline mode so you're not using up your data plan.

Yeah, Spotify has had the ability to cache playlists for a long time.

If you are going to do most of your listening via phone/cache, you might want to stick with rdio though.  Unless they have improved their apps massively since early this summer  Spotify is basically unusable on iOS and Android.

FYI: Spotify's most recent upgrade has some nice new features, but one thing that has disappeared is the drag & drop functionality for creating playlists.

The work around is to right-click the track you want to add to a playlist, then scroll down to "add to" and then find the playlist you want from the pop-up window.

What a pain.  ::)

I swear Spotify has the worst interface ever invented.  It's like they expect someone else to make a UI for them, which is fine sort of.  But no one really wants to get on the web to make a playlist, and no one wants to build an app for Spotify because they don't make any money unless it's a horrible commercial-for-your-product app.

Why doesn't Spotify just buy last.fm?  Seriously.  That site is basically everything last.fm needs and no one does anything with it.  Or why doesn't CBS just turn last.fm into a legit streaming site since they already have the media rights to a ton of stuff?

I swear Spotify has the worst interface ever invented.

I think it's interesting that I've heard a lot of people complain about the Spotify interface.  Are you talking about the interface on your phone or on the regular interface?  I always thought it was the slickest, most intuitive interface of any software I've ever used.  My theory is that I've been using Linux for 15 years now and I've never owned a smartphone so I probably have not used normal software that normal people use.  My expectations are different and lower.

Also, I pay $5 a month and I've never seen an advertisement.  I think it's a bug in the Linux version.  I figure it makes up for the amount of times it crashes.

I've been cleaning my computer and I found my spotify cache was 2 gig!  I deleted the cache and it ran really slow that night.

Thanks again, yall, for the spotify playlists.  You introduce me to a lot of good stuff.

Anyone else having stability issues with Spotify today? Mine keeps crashing.

Mine won't load any artist or album pages. I can listen to my playlists just fine though.

Actually, the same applies to the Devendra Banhart song, too.

We usually lean toward new releases, and try to limit ourselves to five songs per person, and also try not to duplicate tracks, but it's pretty casual.

Go ahead and add away!

Regarding it auto reopening, check your preferences. I think the default on the "new" upgrade was to auto open. I know I had to change mine when I downloaded the upgrade.

Dear Randomvillains,

I have made a Spotify playlist to share with you.  It consists entirely of what I consider to be catchy, poppy, and/or breezy summer songs.

Most of this would fall into the powerpop, indiepop, or dancepop genres.  I confess there is some twee involved, though I have tried to keep it to a minimum.  Admittedly, there is still much here that is silly and/or stupid but I believe that is part of the charm of a summer mix.  Unfortunately, it is inevitable that some of these songs will fall flat as I am not a master mixer and I can accept that other people have different tastes than me.  Feel free to fast foward past the songs you do not like.  So sorry about that.

It is 90% or so songs from this year.   If you actually pay any attention to my posts or infrequent contributions to the monthly Spotify lists you may have heard some of these songs before.  Once again, sorry about that.  I tend to fall in love with songs and listen to them over and over and put them on all my mixes.

I believe this to be child-friendly although I cannot guarantee if I may have missed an F-bomb or something but I don't think I did.

It does not have to be listened to in sequence, and in fact little to no effort was put into the sequencing as it is all singles-y stuff, anyway. It is probably best just to put this on in the background as you do something else otherwise the sugary sweetness of it will rot your brain.

I would enjoy it very much if you listened to at least some of it as it took some effort to compile especially as I hatehatehate the Spotify UI although at the same time I cannot pretend that this was some sort of Herculean endeavor.

You might want to mention it on the Spotify boards, in case it is not a known issue.

I have been having crash problems this week whenever I tried to move a song into a playlist, or delete a song from a playlist. Apparently a lot of users are having the same issue. That said, it was FINALLY working ok for me as of yesterday.

Well apparently the Spotify team is working on a fix, but it hasn't been rolled out to me yet. I'm at my wits end with it all, so here is a fix I found on the Spotify community boards. So far, so good for me. Hope it works for any of you who are also having Spotify woes.

For anyone else in the same position, here is how you can roll back your client to a previous version and temporarily disable automatic updates:

Windows Instructions

http://www.filehorse.com/download-spotify/old-versions/

Download <0.9.0.153 (I'm running 0.9.0.129)
Uninstall current Spotify version (via Add/Remove programs)
Install the old client that you downloaded.
Enjoy the lack of crash

-Optional-

Go to C:/Users/<Name>/Appdata/Roaming/Spotify
Make a new empy text file
Name it Spotify_new.exe
Right click the file and make the file read only
Make a new empty text file
Name it Spotify_new.exe.sig
Right click the file and make the file read only

Mac OSX Instructions

http://mac.filehorse.com/download-spotify/old-versions/

Download <0.9.0.153 (I'm running 0.9.0.129)
Uninstall current Spotify version
Install the old client that you downloaded
Enjoy the lack of crash

-Optional-

Go to your ~/Library folder
Go to Application Support/Spotify
Delete Spotify_new.archive and Spotify_new.archive.sig (if they are there)
Now open your favorite text editor, I used TextWrangler
Make two blank documents and save them as "Spotify_new.archive" and "Spotify_new.archive.sig"
Right click each file and go to "Get Info"
Check the "Locked" button on each and close the info window

All you have to do to reenable automatic updates is just delete the files created during the optional step and it'll work fine. Also, I had to roll back at least two versions on my client because the previous version (0.9.0.153) was giving me playlist crash issues as well for some reason. You can roll back to anything you like, however.

**This is the one I did for my PC desktop, which deletes the buggy version and replaces it with the new version that has the fix**
Windows:
1. Click File > Exit Spotify.
2. Right click on the taskbar, select "Start Task Manager", navigate to the Processes Tab, sort by name and make sure SpotifyWebHelper.exe is not running. If it is, select it in the list and press "End Process".
3. Click Start and select Control Panel.
4. Click Programs and then Programs and Features.
5. Select Spotify in the list and click Uninstall.
6. Go to http://download.spotify.com/Spotify%20Installer.exe and reinstall Spotify.

New thing I don't like: Let's say you double-click on a playlist. All the songs on that playlist get added to your queue, and then played one by one until you get to the end. After that last song is played, your queue gets automatically refilled with all the songs you just listened to. And you can't delete them. You can never have an empty queue.  :o

I'm confused. Why would you double click a playlist?  I also don't get the queue thing. I probably have well over a hundred playlists. I listen to one and when it finishes (or sometimes before), I jump over to the next one. My queue (I think?) is just whatever playlist I'm on.

I'm not asking because I'm saying you're doing something wrong. I'm asking because I'm thinking I'm missing some functionality that I should have been using all along.

It'd be more accurate to say I click once on a playlist to view it, then double-click the first track to start it playing.

Try making a playlist of two songs, then playing it. Then go to your queue and watch the first song disappear when it's done, and after the second song both songs will be back in the queue. And you can't just delete them. You have to replace them by starting up a different playlist. Or an album. But now THOSE songs will reappear in the queue.

I see now this isn't such a big deal, because they changed something else. It used to be if you started listening to a given album from a given artist, spotify would queue up all the artist's other recordings to play after the album was done. So I got in the habit of queueing up the album I wanted to listen to. I see now they've changed it back so you can just listen to the one album.

Even so, I find it irksome. Just let me have control of my own damn queue. Quit fucking around, spotify, and focus on a clean, smooth, fast application that puts control in the hands of people like me who pay your fucking bills.

Now I'm even more confused. Are we talking about the desktop app? I don't even know where my "queue" is! haha  I see what's in my playlist I'm currently in, and the progress I'm making there. When I reach the end of the playlist, it stops so I go to a different one.

If I make a playlist of two songs and then play the first one, it's in the "now playing" until it is done, the second takes its place and when the second is done, the music stops.

Man I feel dumb.

I actually just discovered there is a "Queue" option if you right-click on a track. I guess I've never had the need for it because I play from playlists or just search for a disc and play it from the disc or artist page. When that's done, I go to something new and start that.

So the "advantage" of the queue is if you aren't actually at the laptop/desktop then you don't have to go back to it to keep the music going, I assume. That explains why I never use it - if I'm listening to music from the desktop version, my headphones are plugged in and I'm not wandering around.

I like using the queue to pretend I'm programming a radio station for myself. I'll drop a bunch of songs in that I feel like hearing, and I'll try to arrange them into sets of three or four. I'll keep adding songs as the day goes on. I get extra points if there's a particularly good transition between songs.  8)

I've been working on a series of playlists that flow into the next. I'm only 3 mixes in, as work and moving into our new house has slowed me to a crawl. Anyway, if you're interested here are the links (and I promise they're a bit more friendly to known rock and pop than my tastes may perceive you to believe):

Series 1: Providence (for Youth) - http://open.spotify.com/user/1223500442/playlist/1oLjScvZq0FnXyFWp3MCl4

Series 3: Right Brain - http://open.spotify.com/user/1223500442/playlist/1mIATqyG8kz3QFxrt8HLqb

I also have a 800+ track 90s list that so far is largely alternative, indie, and experimental music from the 90s. It is what it is and I add to it as I remember something I like or occasionally discover something from the decade I didn't know existed.

I normally convert the html link into a Spotify URI (in this case spotify:user:misskitty614:playlist:371AtUpMELjGRzOcrL2LqI) and bung that into the Spotify search bar. Otherwise the html link just opens the web player in my browser, which is kind of useless.

Wow, I remember those guys.  They played Caddy's years ago and some drunk chick kept trying to get up on stage and show them her raw blues dance moves.

Dan, you seem to like that kind of electric blues stuff filtered through a rock lens.  Ever listen to early ZZ Top?  Check out Rio Grande Mud if you're inclined.

2013 has been a good year for powerpop. Give it a listen if you like that sort of thing.

Love that list!  At least the stuff on it I know about.  I will have to listen to it this weekend to pick up on the rest.  I wish rdio had Honeychain and Eric Barao.  Also, I am hardly ever on Spotify so I missed your message, but yeah I was all over that Mammoth Life album.

This is ridiculous that you and I listen to almost the same things but can't share as you are mostly on Spotify and I am on Rdio.  Is there anyway I can entice you to cross over to the dark side?

No, I haven't but I'll check 'em out based on your rec. I mostly know ZZ Top stuff from around when they were in Back To The Future.

I've never really checked out Rdio. I got hooked with Spotify early on and have never bothered to look elsewhere because I am happy with their service. Plus they are currently rolling out a new platform with a chat feature!

Thanks for sending me those tunes, btw. Great stuff!

i know it's an old argument, rdio vs spotify......
i really did like rdio when i had the trial period and often think about going back and paying, but that big free carrot that spotify dangles out there has won my attention for now. mostly due to these playlists and community.
i know most artists hate the service and that does make me uncomfortable. plus it pisses me off that i can't have an avatar because i'm not on facebook, but then their catalogue dwarfs all the others.

the scales tip a little each way.

I also have a 800+ track 90s list that so far is largely alternative, indie, and experimental music from the 90s. It is what it is and I add to it as I remember something I like or occasionally discover something from the decade I didn't know existed.

I think the first time I heard "Ride Like Hell" was on a CMJ sampler in the mid-90s (maybe my first issue of CMJ). Now I would laugh at a CMJ sampler but I still think that's a great song.

Title: Re: Spotify Playlists
Post by: Dan on November 13, 2013, 05:07:12 PM
No one has complained yet about anyone's contributions, so I'm sure we've enjoyed them.

I try, as a rule, to keep it "new" - within the past 6 months or so - but then periodically add something really cool that I just discovered regardless of when it was released.

Indie isn't important.

It might be nice to have a little more discussion about the tracks that are added. I must confess to having been far too busy to listen to anything for the past couple of months, though, so not exactly leading by example there...

Grumbachr, I've totally dug the stuff you've added. Don't worry about whether or not it is "indie," just add whatever sets you alight. Was it you who added Honeyslide? Good tune, and a band that wasn't on my radar.

Lutz, you are right. It would be nice to have more discussion about the tracks that are added.
Title: Re: Spotify Playlists

Thanks everyone.  I try to add stuff on occasion but I to tend to over think things a bit, I'll try to limit the over thinking.

I also keep my own playlist of things I've contributed. I laugh sometimes when I have a listen to what I've shared as a whole, and how many of the tracks have a sound that I would call similar. There are a few odd balls in there but for the most part I do see a similarity that I must be drawn to in music.  Do others do that, are we each bring our own consistent flavor to the list. Or are the rest of you more random?

Overall, the amount of music these lists have exposed me to is amazing, I'm very glad I've found them are you guy are putting in the effort to keep them going.  Thank you very much for that.

That's a good idea. I may have to do that myself. I know I'm one of only a few people who contributes any hip hop to the list and I tend to add local Minneapolis stuff, because I tend to be a homer and my sources of new music right now are limited to The Current and these lists.

it makes sense that your list has similar sounding songs on it....after all, that is your taste. i would say that all the participants kind of do that. it is only when you listen to someone else's contribution do you think "hmmm....i wouldn't have thought i liked that", and BAM!, therein lies the beauty of the communal list. that said, i personally do use a filter of sorts.....a small part of the criteria is, aside from the song being good to me, do i think others will like it and is it appropriate for this list? for example......i might love a 12 minute swans song, but would pass that over for general consumption.
by virtue of being ex-woxians, i think the type of music is going to be pretty consistent. on the flip side, if someone sees merit in a lady gaga song, well, maybe it is worth hearing for some reason. i believe FUN! was on a playlist once and it gave me the opportunity to realize i didn't need to go any farther with them.

and since we are on the topic, another thing i pay attention to is FLOW....sometimes paul or somebody will add a song that might be folksy....or electronic...or whatever....and it is fun (not FUN!) to make the decision to either dovetail with that or do a 180.......

last, i do an ongoing best of the year playlist, which is mostly stuff i sniff out from radio streams, but certainly woxy users songs from others always get added as well....so, yeah....i really enjoy these lists as well.

spotify needs to desperately improve their search users function though....i have no idea how to find people.

Yeah, I do this too. It's a good way to keep track of the stuff I like.

I also keep an Excel spreadsheet of every new release that I listen to (singles, Eps, LPs) during the year, with a very brief synopsis - something that tells me in one sentence what it sounds like or why I like/dislike it. Durrrr....I realize that probably sounds totally anal.

I'll "star" tracks on these lists that I like so I won't forget about them, plus I'll often listen to my starred tracks on random. It's kinda like a decent radio station, playing a mix of familiar tracks with new stuff thrown in.

fun fact:
i believe that flipside by the breeders is the song that josephine wiggs played the drums and jim macpherson played bass during recording....that is how they played it live when they were touring the 20th anniversary of that album. it was funny how committed they were to recreating the details in honor of the album.

that was a great show by the way. i counted stubs recently and i think i have seen them 6 times now and that anniversary tour was one of the best.....

I put together a list one time of songs that sound like classic rock and which I guess actually are classic rock, but aren't actually in the "classic rock" oeuvre that you hear on the radio.  They're mostly not crazy obscure or anything, just a bit overlooked.  I can dig it up and share it on Spotify if you want.

I forgot about ELO!  Definitely add some ELO.  And Rush... Tom Sawyer!

I wouldn't have thought of GnR and AiC... to new for me to call them classic, but the Classic Rock Stations here have been playing U2 since the mid 90's so what do I know.

How about:
George Harrison - What is Life?, My Sweet Lord
Ringo Starr - Photograph (this only doesn't suck because Harrison wrote it)
McCartney - Maybe I'm Amazed, Band on the Run, Jet etc etc
Elton - Almost everything from Yellow Brick Road is essential
Heart - Barracuda, Magic Man, Crazy on You
Los Bravos - Black is Black
Stealer's Wheel - Stuck in the Middle
John Fogerty - Centerfield
Van Morrison - Moondance, Brown Eyed Girl, Domino etc.
Neil Diamond - Kentucky Woman, Cherry Cherry, Sweet Caroline
Simon and Garfunkel - Sounds of Silence, Mrs. Robinson etc.
early Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
Travelling Wilbury's - Handle with Care
Roy Orbison - Pretty Woman, Only the Lonely
Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way, Don't Stop, Rhiannon etc.
Jackson Brown - Doctor My Eyes, Running on Empty, The Load-Out
Herman's Hermits - I'm Into Something Good
The Band - The Weight, Up On Cripple Creek
The Buckinghams - Kind of a Drag

I almost forgot Carole King!

Slaves were just announced for this year's Great Escape festival. I saw them supporting Drenge before Christmas and they were bloody hilarious. The lead vocalist also played the drums standing up, which I've never seen before.

Their new stuff isn't out yet, so I added an older song.

Yeah that song sounds a bit ludicrous. Do they idolize Pete Doherty or something?

Haha, they're way more punk than Pete Doherty. They also had a range of entertaining stories told between songs, but none of them involved heroin.

Good album, that.
I knew I was going to struggle with this when it didn't have that harder edge.  I've been sooo tired of softer music the last several months.  And this album isn't bad - just different from the last.  However, after listening to the WOXY mix again in full, that track made me perk up my ears to see which track was playing.  So that's a good sign of a grower!

I am really enjoying the punk and dance-oriented tracks!  Thanks to all this month's contributors.  :)

I guess they want users to share everything through Facebook or within the Spotify program rather than posting links to the outside.

I think the 5 songs is a guideline so no one person dominates the playlist each month, but there's plenty of contribution so I wouldn't worry about the occasional binge.

Not sure if anyone's already doing this, but I've started a master playlist of all the songs we've been adding to these playlists. I figure when a month ends I'll add those tracks to the master list. Seems like a good way to revisit earlier songs, create a radio station that focuses on newer music (hopefully), play it all on random, or what have you. It currently stands at 1,111 tracks and over 70 hours of music. Added another track from Glass Animals. Their debut album Zaba is out on Monday in the UK, pretty sure it's going to end up on the Mercury Prize list.

Edit: Almost forgot, I have a story to go with the second track. My friend is borderline stalking this band, Beautiful Boy, has seen them a bunch of times and chatted to them a fair bit. They were playing three or four gigs over the course of the Great Escape Festival weekend, which she intended to see all of. She was chatting with them after the first gig and was trying to play it cool by asking "Oh, so are you playing any other shows this weekend?", and the guy goes "Yeah! Here, give me your programme and I'll show you...", to which she immediately grabs the programme to her chest saying "Oh, that's fine, I can find it!" because she of course had circled every one of their gigs, not quite annotated with little hearts, but you get the idea...

i kind of think that too, but i also wonder how much was tinkered with by whoever did the final cut since these are all posthumous songs.
despite that, i still think it's one of the catchier on that album....and the awkwardness of MJ asking do you know where your children are wasn't lost on me either....

Went to a great local festival this weekend, so I'm currently adding the cream of Reading's musical talent to the playlist. I really can't stop gushing about Area 52 - they're a group of local high school kids, the drummer looks about 14, but they are fantastically self-assured and put on a great live performance replete with guitar and drum solos. They just released their first EP and it's pretty damn good. Can't wait to see what they're doing in a few years - hope they don't all get split up by university.

I had to add Classless Kids straight off the bat. It's the last song on Young Summer's debut album, so I think it might be largely missed. It's also a bit of a change of pace from the rest of the album - less synth-heavy but still very ethereal.

Yeah, you get a nice cross section of different stuff. I like hearing what everyone is digging, as some of it isn't on my radar at all. Not all of it is to my taste, but then, neither was everything that WOXY played...but it's still better that 99 percent of the drek being played on commercial radio.

I'm glad someone else added that SOAK track, so I don't have to! She has a lot of promise.

I saw her at The Great Escape festival last year - some other band I wanted to see had a queue around the building, so I wandered off to see who was on at one of my favourite venues - and she was absolutely adorable. The whole crowd was listening in respectful silence, until some utter dickbiscuit at the back shouted "Why don't you cheer the fuck up? Play something happy!" He got booed and jeered out of the room and she got extra applause and encouragement for the rest of the set.

I couldn't decide - there were a few that I didn't like but otherwise of the ones I liked I felt they were all equal. So I went with the "title track" (kind of title-ly?). I don't know which one 6 Music is playing, though.

That Capo Twin album came out like three months ago. *sadly shakes head*

Capo? If that's a typo for Aphex, then yes, it came out in September. I didn't know this until last week. Such is my lack of musical exposure these past 5 years.

they are based in NYC.... only have a (pre-recorded) DJ for a few hours a day. they play the more popular or catchy alt bands, and about 40% tried and true classics....(cure, smiths, depeche mode).....they don't do deeper cuts on newer bands, but focus more on heavy rotation of the singles. alt j....sharon van etten, zola jesus, etc.....all decent stuff....just not too obscure like a couple other stations i frequent.

in that sense, they are what woxy was sometimes like.

Post by: MissKitty on March 22, 2015, 05:28:38 PM
Yes, Spotify did more than just tweak some stuff; they rolled out a completely new application/ site, and it's buggy like a baby stroller.

The more I look through it, the more pissed off I get. I also found that I can't see who posted tunes, but only in the shared playlists that have been "closed" to new stuff. So I CAN see who added stuff to our current WOXY users playlist, but not the previous ones.

Infuriating.

Now I can't even see who's added songs in the currently active playlist, let alone the closed ones. So now I need to ask: who added that All We Are song? - I've been adding their songs to various months' playiists for almost a year now :p

Edit: Also, what happened to the first four songs from this month's?! They've totally upped and disappeared - can anyone else still see them?
Title: Re: Spotify Playlists
Post by: MissKitty on March 24, 2015, 06:22:57 PM
That is weird - I don't see the earlier tracks either. The first one I can see is Public Service Broadcasting, which certainly was not the first cut added. Did anyone accidentally delete some tracks, or is it Spotify really fucking themselves over with this new rollout?

Either way, the new site BLOWS.

But I can see who added tracks to this list. Maybe because I am the creator?
Title: Re: Spotify Playlists
Post by: lutz on March 24, 2015, 07:27:22 PM
The first one I can see is the Zibra one, which is before the PSB one, so that makes no fucking sense whatsoever. Well done, Spotify!

wonder if it matters if you don't use spotify on your phone?
i don't, and i'm not on facebook.....but really, i guess we're gonna get got one way or another.

I don't have Spotify connected to FB and I don't use it on my phone either. But I do use Spotify on my iTouch, but iTouch is exclusively music for me; I use my phone for social media stuff. I have Spotify connected with my LastFM account, and both are connected to the same email account which is used for nothing else - but I'm sure that isn't far enough under the radar.

I am linked thru FB, and have once or twice used it on my phone. No music stored on phone, but they can apparently see my images that are on FB. On the one hand, I should unlink, and not use it on my phone. On the other hand, they'll cast the net wider, somehow.

No idea why that stuff is important to them, aside from the presumption that any large social entity is trying to destroy all others, and be "the only app you'll ever need." That's never worked, and will never work.

Just glad I'm contributing to the playlist correctly!

I just added the latest Suede song, "Like Kids" to the January playlist.  I think it must be new to Spotify because I swore I searched for it the weekend before last when I started to hear it and came up empty.

I also wanted to share this fun hack for those who may not have heard about it yet - http://songl.ink/908fd  (http://songl.ink/908fd) - this link gives you options to what service you prefer to listen.  You can share a track, create a link on Songl.ink (providing you can find the track) and you have a handy link like Ow.ly to share.  The creator mentioned that YouTube can be a problem, but I can look past that.

Pass the word on about songl.ink if you like it!

BTW, for those interested, I'm still adding each month's playlist to a master playlist, now with 115 hours of music. Throw it all on random and you have a pretty good WOXY clone (minus material prior to August 2011, of course -- yes, we've been doing this for over five years...)

Lately I've been noticing songs that literally give me goose bumps. Usually this has to do with the backing vocals, but not always. Sometimes it's the song as a whole, or maybe just certain lyrics. These songs just have a certain quality that gets under the skin, so to speak. Anyhow, it being October, it seemed like a good time to start a collaborative playlist of such songs. Feel free to add those songs that give you chills...

Can we talk about the Lala Lala song, Dream Song?

I can't get over how much I like that. I keep listening to it so that I might get tired of it, or figure out WHY I like it. It's too simple and too repetitive. Yet somehow it catches my ear on every listen and makes me focus on it.

Impressive.

For the last few weeks I've found myself focusing on female voices in indie music, so I decided to make a playlist that features a bunch of songs I like, all with women singing. This is far from a definitive list, but there are 130 songs here -- almost 9 hours of music -- and no act or artist is repeated. It's mostly material that's been released in the last five or ten years, but some songs go way back. I'll keep adding songs as I discover / remember them.

At this point, the only "rule" for what gets added is no male voices. Not even as backing vocals. I may relax on the backing vocals aspect at some point -- Great Northern's STORY is an amazing song, after all -- but for now I like the challenge. Dudes get plenty of representation.

Went to the Weezer/Foo Fighters concert last night. Despite being wistful when I realised/remembered that I was a teenager when some of the songs came out, I still had a great time. And Dave Grohl's showmanship skills have not eroded one bit!

Anyway, here's two Spotify playlists, one for each band's set. I'd say the crowd was 95% there for the Foos, but TAG and I stood throughout the whole Weezer set. Plus, a Pixies cover always puts me in a good mood:

Weezer: https://open.spotify.com/user/1234105514/playlist/0ZBH6HPpp9HvcP31dEAl10
Foo Fighters: https://open.spotify.com/user/1234105514/playlist/3RibtUgCsuRlo2ascuqWje

The encore started with Dave coming out solo and did "The Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners," because, of course, it's Australia. The first time he'd played that in about 4 years, apparently. He also did about half of "Blackbird" by himself before the house lights came back on and revealed that the rest of the band had snuck back on stage.

Not to mention that Spotify criminally underpays the artists.

Yes, they need to pay artists more. No doubt.

But look at it this way: I stream an album and decide whether I like it enough to buy it. If I don't, I've saved some money. If I do, the artist gets the sale, plus whatever spotify pays them, because I still stream it. You just pay the artist once for the album. I pay them in perpetuity a little extra.

It's a realistic service for me, as I don't have the budget to buy all the music I'd like to. But I listen to music all the time. I have to keep finding new stuff because I get tired of the same stuff over and over again. All the new bands I discovered ten years ago are tired for me now. I have CDs galore from amazing bands I just never listen to anymore. I can't keep adding to this collection indiscriminately. Spotify lets me spend time with an album before deciding if it makes the cut.

Spotify pays based on percentages, so the more people who use it to listen to indie artists the more those indie artists will get paid.

I once asked the guy who runs the label Vandaveer is on about income from spotify. He didn't give me figures, of course, but he said it was more than he expected it to be.

It's just not for me, I guess. I love playing CDs in my stereo.
I love spinning vinyl, but can't manage that in the car very well. ;)

Since I joined the Spotify community in 2011 I have purchased a shit-ton more music than I did in previous years, mainly because I now have the ability to listen to the music before shelling out the cash. Frankly, before I had Spotify in my life, I'd gotten burned numerous times buying albums that were not worth the money - to the point where I had stopped buying ANY new music.

Spotify also offers a great way to discover new artists. Listen to an artist you already know and like, check out the "Related Artists" feature and pretty soon I've disappeared down the rabbit hole of discovery. It's hella easier and quicker than the olden days, when I relied on music reviews in DIY zines, music mags and even 97X.

To me, ten bucks for this resource is an absolute STEAL. Hope they never find out that I'd happily pay more ...

I don't purchase any music at all anymore, and I gave way my entire CD collection of 1500 or so CD's last year when I moved.

Optimally, Spotify should give more money to the artists.  But it doesn't matter.  If they charged more money, people would just stop using Spotify and pirate everything.  And under the current fee structure, Spotify isn't even making a profit because of what they pay for licenses.  So Spotify is already dying or dead.

The bad news is that the vast majority of people do not care enough about music to want to pay for it.  The good news is, it turns out that there are ridiculously talented people all over the world who love making music and are happy to release it for free.  They just never had an avenue.

In retrospect, I think we can look at the music era from maybe 1930-2000 as weird anomaly in cultural history.  We're essentially back to the way it always has been.  People listening to wandering bards and songs becoming popular via word of mouth but with no one making money off of them.  It's just happening online now.

Seems to me the catch is that they
A) want my listener data on Spotify, which isn't really a big deal to me
B) they want you to watch their ad-supported plan, so you get commercials

Otherwise, from what I could tell, I think you're right.
Title: Re: Spotify Playlists
Post by: Zafer Kaya on March 19, 2019, 01:55:07 PM
Well yeah, the long term goal is to become the dominant content provider across all "traditional" mediums.  So they can make craptons of dollars by selling your data and/or selling you ads or whatever else.

But the immediate concern probably is to head off Apple who are attempting to do the same thing.  Personally, I think it's stupid to worry about Apple because Apple's snobbery and space as a luxury/niche brand means they have no interest in dominating the market.  They want to offer you something more universal and better than anyone else, but only for their high-paying customers.  They want 20% of the market willing to pay an assload for the best, and the vast majority of people who will settle for okay at a cheaper price can go someplace else and that's fine with them.

Google could absolutely destroy this industry and half a dozen others if they wanted to. They already have Google Play for music, YouTube and YouTube.TV, plus you know, GOOGLE.  And Android.  And Pixel. And Google Home.  And a decent chunk of cloud.  And now Google Stadia.  They just don't seem to have any interest in it, for whatever reason.  Probably because no one has figured out how to make money doing it, so Google is fine with just having their toe in the water and maybe someone else comes up with a profitable plan and then Google will swoop in and take it from them.

But yeah, this is basically the standard tech play of "get the users and figure out how to make money later."  Spotify has never made money, so why start now?  They're doing okay.  Mostly because investors keep throwing billions of dollars at them despite their lack of profit, but that doesn't matter to Spotify.  Their business plan is generating revenue, it's just not generating revenue from the consumers.  The money people are happy as long as Spotify gets more users, so that's what they'll do.  But they can't make money or increase their userbase much anymore just off streaming music so they need to throw something else in.

Hulu is competing with YouTube.live on the cord-cutter front, and with YouTube, Prime, and Netflix on the streaming front.  They're doing original content to set themselves apart, but original content is expensive.  So tapping into Spotify's user base is a way to get some audience.

Anyway, yeah.  Hulu (with ads) is free now with a Spotify subscription.  It's legit.  Don't know how long it will last, but at least until June 10 which is enough time for you to watch Killing Eve and Handmaid's Tale.
