source?  I've heard the rumor...

but nothing to confirm it...  if it's true I will be VERY happy.

Well until I see pavilion ticket prices.  *sigh*  My guess...  $78.  $95 after fees.  probably on the high side...  but I am preparing my brain for the worse.

Cool. As soon as CR posted it to FB, I looked on both Radiohead's website and Riverbend's. Not listed on either but then I found Riverbend's website hard to navigate. I fully expect to see some pre-sale in the Waste store. I mean, there had better be. ;)

CR & Co., where are you getting this price info etc.? I can't find any trace of this show anywhere.

is this true?
my mind is not allowing me to believe it.

i am already worried i will not be able to get a ticket, and there hasn't even been an official statement.....

We are passing on everything we know so far. The source is reliable. Obviously for our sake we hope his info is correct. He came back with the tickets prices quickly so we have to believe its all kosher.

I thought earlier today that this would be an ideal second gig for the Great American Ball Park. Not quite the 'general appeal' of Sir Paul but it would certainly bring in thousands of people from the surrounding cities and cement GABP as a credible venue. Anyone know the capacity at Riverbend?

Anyone remember what the prices were for the Indy show at the Riverbend-esque place in 08?  I had lawn seats but I can't remember.  If they were pretty similar to this it might seem more viable (not that I'm doubting CR, just for the sake of speculation).  I want to say the lawn seats were more in the $30-35 range.

I was at the Indy 08 show and just checked my ticket stub, it was $59 for pavilion plus charges (which made it about $80 in total).

When will this get some official confirmation? Just wondering.

Of course they are already locked in to play Bonnaroo on jun 8 so they'll want to play one or two "warm-up" gigs before that.

I check this thread everyday...

If I get to see Radiohead and Weezer in cincinnati in the same year...   I will be super happy.

And I will be going for pavilion tix.  The lawn at riverbend SUCKS.  For several reasons. #1 you can't see anything. And the big monitors suck. More importantly you can't HEAR anything.  I've been told the neighborhoods around riverbend (where are they? KY?) complained enough to keep the sound levels down...  so on the lawn it's just not loud enough.  Especially over the chit-chat of all the drunkards.

I like lawn at riverbend for bands I don't really care about...  and just want to party with friends.  Like Dave Matthews Band.

Ha! Pretty sure I'll be on a plane at 10AM after seeing them in concert. Buying a ticket for a local show that I just saw somewhere else while I'm traveling home sounds pretty neat. Wonder if the plane'll have Wifi. ;)

So oddly enough, I was a member of waste.co.uk when it was still alive.  When I read that waste members were to receive the presale code, I realized I had not gotten an e-mail from waste in quite some time.  And here I find out that it's on a different url and I was not a member.  Ah well.

Maybe some of you share this plight, maybe some don't.  But I'm lookin' for the sweet meat.  The sweeeeeeet meats.  The presale code.  Maybe you have it and want to help a longtime fan out.  Or maybe you don't.

True love waits.  And I cannot wait to see my boys again.

there is some discussion that thursday is the pre-sale date and saturday is general sale, but the nobody knows if you need a code. if you do, nobody has admitted to getting one no matter how long they've been a waste member.

Hey, would one of you fine, upstanding citizens be willing to help me score good tix?

For those who know my feelings on Radiohead, this is probably a huge surprise, but I assure you I have the best of intentions. My friend who is fighting cancer perked up about 400% when I alerted her to the fact that Radiohead is playing Cincy, so some friends and I want to score her (and her +1) the best seats we can possibly get them.

If someone could PM me the best possible method for getting good seats, I'd certainly appreciate it. Thanks.

If someone could PM me the best possible method for getting good seats, I'd certainly appreciate it. Thanks.

Stubhub.  would be the easiest way to get good seats.  Not the cheapest.  But easy and guaranteed.

Or if you want to pay face...

Sign up for a WASTE membership.  Check tomorrow starting at 9am EST  Then check at 9:30am and 10am.  If the sale still hasn't happened..  start checking every 15-30min throughout the day...  yeah there are firefox extensions that will check a page for changes and notify you...  But it might hammer the site and get your IP banned too.  Make sure you have access to a different external IP address (not just a diff computer on the same network) if you try this.  I got blocked from getting yankees tix one year for hitting refresh too many times.

Also pre-sales sometimes only sell a few tickets.  It probably varies from venue to venue.  It might be 100 tix. or 10k tix.

Ticketmaster onsale saturday is the other option.  Their site is reliable. Be ready 10min before the onsale...  hit refresh once a minute until 2min before the sale... then hammer away.  Make sure your clocks are correct too.  TM regularly starts selling 1-2min before the announced time. (at least in my experience)

If you are ok with lawn...  you have no worries.  If you want pavilion...  When you get into the onsale screen choose your # of tix and best available QUICKLY.  Then learn to type captcha words really fast. TM is very generous with mistakes on their captcha.  you can be several letters off.  Sometimes you only have to type one of the two words.  But type them both to be sure.  And don't then go to the mouse to click next...   just hit enter on the keyboard.  One second can be the diff between row 15 and row 25 on fast selling shows.  And make sure you already have a TM account.  You don't want to be entering your info while the timer counts down. I've lost out on tickets that way.

And practice...  find a TM onsale for friday... and try to get good seats... you don't have to buy them.  just go through the process so on saturday you are ready to rock.

Multiple computer can help too...  refresh one then the other.  If you can get on multiple external IP address - even better.  Ex. laptop on your TW internet and another laptop tethered to your verizon hotspot internet. I would not suggest attempting to buy tix on the web using a phone or tablet. If that's your plan... def. try it out first on friday.

That's all my pro tips...

And remember if this is an event you just can't miss... there is always the stubhub backup.  It's not pretty.  But you won't miss the show.

Hmmm... really would like to see the boys, despite my constant criticism of Yorke's vocal masturbations.
Seems like a lot of trouble, though. I should be able to have my F5 ready, and I need to double check the TM form and make sure it's all pre-filled. Good idea on the non-purchase of a ticket for an unrelated show a day in advance.
So, I'm not the rabid concert fan I once was. A show like this when I was in my 20s would have either had me getting in line early or paying someone who did. Now it all seems so random with technology and F5 skills (not to mention the DSL connection itself) determining who gets to sit where.
I kinda miss the old days where you had to show up twice to see a good band. Once in line for tickets, and once again for the show itself.
I guess I'd rather have the certainty of a ticket line over the uncertainty of an internet connection. At least when you go to get tickets and the line's around the block, you know where you stand. With a screen to refresh, there's no concept of what types and quantities of weirdos who are out there, me included.

I just got the below email from Live Nation, so if you miss Thursday's pre-sale on WASTE, it appears there is a Live Nation pre-sale on Friday. While the below relates to the Cleveland show, I imagine there will be one for the Cincy show too.

good advice......
unfortunately i am getting swamped this week and it's looking like i will not be at a computer tomorrow between 9AM-10AM....so, i understand that it's a tall order.....but if anyone is buying pavillion tomorrow and can tack 3 more on there, i'd appreciate it...i will pay you in cash and sandra fluke sex tapes.

worst case scenario, i'll find a way, but just throwing this out here first....

I kinda agree. But standing in lines gives the advantage to the unemployed and the professional ticket scalpers.

Also being first in line doesn't guarantee you good seats.  I can remember getting in line at a TM location and having 1-2 in front of me and having the person working the computer be SUPER SLOW...  like not even start taking orders until 10-15min into the onsale and letting people pick and choose sections for 10min each.  or letting the first guy in line place 10 orders.  ugh.  much worse than the level playing field of the internet IMO.  However I've also heard stories of awesome clerks selling TM tickets... taking money and orders from everyone BEFORE the onsale then banging out 20 orders in 5 minutes.

I also remember the trick of calling a TM location out of state for a local show to avoid busy signals.  #oldSkoolProTip

I also remember line lotteries...  where you could be the last in line and get first choice.  In those situations the advantage went to the guy that bought 8 of his friends to get lottery tix.

I hope I get tix via the WASTE presale...  I will be in the middle of nowhere this weekend. ugh...

Mine did the same thing, but I clicked on that "email your p'word" link and the sale was still active.
Weird. I couldn't log in under the old password so I rejoined yesterday with a new password. I even went all the way through with a bogus sale on a Bonarroo ticket just to make sure the site worked. Then the "new" password from yesterday that worked for the Bonarroo ticket suddenly wouldn't take and it apparently wanted the old original WASTE p'word. Weird.
Like I said, they emailed my p'word to me. I F5'd, looked at the cart, and two pit tickets were still in it. Cha-ching.

Ugh. Sorry to hear this, I hate it when fans get screwed over. But I would advise to keep trying for the next hour or so. They have been known to release tix in batches, not all at once. Also, keep in mind Saturday (at a for real specified time) there will be more tix available.

Debating over whether or not I want to shell out the $80 for a pair of lawn seats ... I already did the standing in a field Radiohead experience at the 08 Indy show and two days prior to that even further back at Lollapalooza ... just not sure if it's worth it or not to shell out those Ticketmaster charges again for the lawn.

Yeah, I was like WTF? Almost had something in 600 for a minute there, but it timed out on me because I wasn't paying close enough attention to that browser.

An hour later, and stuff is still popping up in 700-800-900. WTF?

Post by: cyclone on March 10, 2012, 12:02:54 PM
so how was your experience at the two other shows, other than being far away?

They were great, probably slightly elevated by the fact that I was/am a huge IR fan, and those sets were heavy on the IR material.  The Lolla set included a couple of Bends deep cuts, which kind of made the show for me, including the title track.  The Indy set featured Climbing Up The Walls, which isn't one of my favorite OKC tracks, but is supposedly pretty rare live.  And then Exit Music and Street Spirit in the encore.

I haven't been to Riverbend in ages but it's probably around exactly the same size as that Indy venue (Verizon Center was it?) ... the lawn experience wasn't so bad, it just sucks having to shell out for the insufferable Ticketmaster inconvenience charges when you're essentially paying to go sit in some grass and hope you can see the band and don't get surrounded by some douche-y drunk(s).  On that note, the type of crowd you see at a Radiohead show is pretty interesting in my experience ... literally everyone around me on the lawn was either making fun of or completely bored by Grizzly Bear opening, and you have to wonder exactly what kind of music all these Radiohead fans on the lawn actually listen to.  But anyway, I probably shouldn't complain too much.  This is one of the only bands of which I would pay to come out to an arena-caliber concert with an elaborate light show, etc. ... and the prices aren't too bad all things considered ... I just can't afford the pit and I hate that the charges are almost as much as what another ticket would have cost.

Cyclone, we all hate the "convenience" charges with a passion just like you, but once in a while you just have to forget about it. I mean really, how many times in our lifetime can one expect Radiohead to be playing Cincinnati?

Hey Euro, we might be sitting close to you. We are also fourth row in 700.

awesome. If my memory serves me right, our seats are 700 DD 37-38. We'd love to have some guaranteed non-drunks, non-douche-types near us

Speaking of which, is there a pre-show WOXY (oops, I mean Randomville) gathering?

why do you say that? Do you think it's such a great venue? I have no idea how an artist or band would evaluate the venue, but as a fan, Riverbend is mediocre at best, having seen shows at similar "summer sheds" around the country.

they have not.

Not as a headliner, but they've been here before, if you ask some old schoolers around town. ;)

And it was in '96 when they opened up for Alanis.

Any further questions?

I was saying I think they will decide not to play Riverbend once they see it.

I've only been to a few of these type venues...  blossom, deer creek, polaris, alpine, SPAC, maybe a few others...  dang.  That's more than I expected. Riverbend is my least favorite.  It's not horrible.  But it's nothing special.  my biggest complaints are the lawn.  You can't see shit and more importantly you can't HEAR shit.  The volume is so low at riverbend if you are on the lawn all you can hear is drunk people.

However I am excited to see the new "lawn" I think that's a nice improvement.  And I don't mind the beer/liquor selection/prices at riverbend.

However if I was Radiohead I think Riverbend would seem a little low end...  with a racetrack next door.  I dunno...  Mainly it was just a joke.  Part of my fear this isn't real at all.

Kind of surprised this hasn't sold out.  Though if TM's interactive availability map thing is actually accurate, there are approximately 5 pavilion seats and about 20 lawn.

I only see one pavilion seat available.  not counting handicapped seats.  Dang. the handicapped get all the breaks.  I wish I was...  no wait.

How can you tell how many lawn are left?  For me it just shows the color... which according to the chart is medium availability...

There are 4 colors.  grey = 0.  then 3 shades of blue.  we are in the middle shade of blue.

But yeah I am shocked there are still lawn seats.  Looks like there are only 4,100 pavilion seats out of 20,500 total.  If my google sources are correct.

15k+ on the lawn seems nuts.

I'm not looking forward to the parking nightmare.  Sold out shows at riverbend suck...  My advice...  park out past river downs across the street in the overflow lot, then after the show head east/south to get back to 275.

You have the absolute best seats in the house. Slightly jealous but very happy for you.

Section 200 is the middle section (flanked by 100 and 300), and THERE IS NO BAD SEAT in Section 200, PERIOD. If you are in 100 or 300, there is a risk you are way off to the side.

Yeah, it's a bittersweet thing.  I bought the tix the first day when they were seemingly going really quickly, turns out that was just the pavilion/pit seats, and the lawn still hasn't sold out.  I guess that shows how long it has been since I dealt with Riverbend, which bring me to my next point, how I had forgotten how bad the Riverbend lawn was.  I haven't been in years but the more I thought about it the more I realized that (for me) it just isn't worth the $ when I might actually have a better time watching a live DVD with a nice audio set-up.  If it had been a little cheaper I wouldn't have minded, but pushing $90 for the lawn, I think I'd rather spend that money elsewhere given my current financial state.  If I don't end up selling them, I will take my girlfriend who would want to go (but is supportive of my decision to sell), so it's no big deal.  Haven't had any luck on Craigslist since it still isn't a sell out, so we'll see.

Fabulous is correct. Still blown away the next morning. BTW: we were sitting about 15 seats away from you. :) I saw so many woxians last night it was like a bash...granted, I only talked to a few but saw many from afar. :)

So, between this show and Indy a few years back, I have heard almost all of my favorite songs performed by them. The lighting was superb and was a bit bummed I wasn't more center to the stage in hopes of catching a good shot (mine were totally blown out). Radiohead are high on my lists of favorite concerts and it has as much to do with the fact they are one of my favorite bands as being great performers with lighting and effects to match. The only other show I would put up there in my limited concert going experience would be Jonsi.

So, I noticed this footnote on setlist.fm:
Note: I Might Be Wrong, Dollars and Cents, These Are My Twisted Words, Subterranean Homesick Alien, Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box, Bloom and Full Stop were soundchecked before show

Damn. What time do you have to be there to hear them soundcheck??? We were late enough to miss the first song or two of Caribou. Who were fantastic I just wish I was in the pit for that performance as I felt a little out of the party loop where we were sitting.

yes. here to echo what everyone is saying.....incredible show.
so much weed too.

the light show (that seems like an outdated term) was really effective at changing moods.....very smart, crisp and clean design, especially when they brought those screens down to make a "ceiling", which i thought was very intimate and nice. that technology is pretty impressive. the whole changing effect kicked ass and the color choices were great.

the energy was good. the crowd was good, even though it is amazing how many talk during slower songs. the din of noise for being outside was still a little distracting. and of course there was an obligatory group of BROS in front of me dancing with their beer cups held high, but at least they were into it. and nothing was going to dampen my spirits.

saw some woxians from afar......friz, beelisty, jp, joe (who apparently was hanging with half of the red hot chili peppers).......a few woxy shirts about.
great night for a show, big moon, down on the river. you can't ask for more!

glad to finally see radiohead, well worth the wait!

also- caribou was good too, even though i wasn't in place for half of their set.

and yes, SP, my seat was basically where yours was, about 9 rows back from the pit. EXCELLENT view of everyone.

Reminds me of the guy next to me, who went nuts when "Airbag" came on as the second song and he went screaming "Karma!" a few times later, until he finally seemed to resign himself that this ain't the 1997 Radiohead anymore and they weren't gonna play Karma Police. Likewise for the married couple in front of me who stood around pretty much bored until very late in the show when a couple of older songs came about (Subterranean Homesick Alien; Everything In Its Right Place). I gather they met in the late 90s and Radiohead was their fave band back then and lost track of Radiohead since. Thankfully there were a couple of die-hards behind me who were head-bobbling and dancing all the way through, so I didn't feel super-silly doing likewise  ;D

I saw the Blossoms set list yesterday and thought to myself "we really lucked out in Cincinnati" as I think that the Cincy setlist was significantly "better" than the Cleveland one (but this is obviously a purely personal bias). I mean, Airbag, Codex, Subterranean, EIIRP, those alone ar worth it so much more!!

(Would've also liked to have Spinning Plates, but hey, you can't win them all.)

I kind of agree though I wouldn't have minded the other songs. I am almost positive they played House of Cards in Indy last tour. That song I could hear again live for sure as that song along with How to Disappear Completely and There There (The Boney Kind of Nowhere) are my top favorite songs by Radiohead.

It's easy to tip the scales in the only direction you experience.

The crowd was 100x better in Cuyahoga Falls on Wednesday, which put the band in better spirits.. which yielded a far better show, regardless of the setlist. Out of the six times I've seen them this year, Wednesday night's was the best.

I'm not gonna argue with that.

Actually, I change my mind. There's no way it could've been the better show. Why? Because you drank the Cleveland kool-aid. It probably (probably? with metaphysical certainty!)was the worst show on the ENTIRE TOUR so far. So there!  :P

i'll be forever grateful that i finally heard nude and codex live, so while cuyahoga falls maybe got a better show, i am totally cool with our setlist and wouldn't have traded. i would have loved to have heard weird fishes and street spirit (which they aren't playing this tour, but still.......)

by the way, in about an hour you can watch radiohead play FREE on youtube's bonnaroo webcam....

Saw the Bonnaroo set list. Couldn't help but notice that it was pretty much in line with other recent sets, as in: not noticebly longer. When I saw Radiohead at Bonnaroo in 2006, they played a 28 song set list, heavy on then-still unreleased In Rainbows and OK Computer. What a show that was.

http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/radiohead/2006/great-stage-park-manchester-tn-63d6f23f.html

As a complete aside, one of the reasons (but there are others) that I stopped going to Bonnaroo and Coachella after going for 5-6 years straight is that eventually the same bands get recycled. I mean, you can only headline so many bands. And I do understand that the real meat is the underscore bands, but even that is amazingly similar after going to these festivals for that many years.

Surprised that I haven't seen a comment yet, but Radiohead is playing US Bank Arena on July 25. Tix went on sale on Friday 10 am. As it was, I had a client meeting at the very same time, but I was saved by my buddy who scored tix. By the time I got out of the meeting, an hour later, no tix were available on TM.

Surely this is THE concert event of the year for us in Cincy? (sorry, Bunbury) I am blown away that Radiohead is even playing a 3rd rate concert venue like US Bank Arena. I'd have expected a Riverbend gig, like last time they were here in 2012. Either way, super-excited!

I flew back into Cincinnati yesterday, and as it happens, the plane gave me a perfect view of how widespread the flooding has been, including the Coney Island/Riverbend area. Nothing but water everywhere.

I can remember the last time I was there.  I took my daughter to see Trans Siberian Orchestra a few years ago.  But that really doesn't count as a concert.  A lot of the music was prerecorded--more like a play with music.  The last concert I saw there was Love and Rockets/Pixies.  The Pixies easily blew the headliners off the stage.

i just looked while typing this.....there is one on etsy right now for $425

I saw that same Pixies/Love and Rockets tour.

The Pixies sucked.  Their amps weren’t working that great, and then they got into some weird argument on stage.  They did like four half-assed songs and left.

Love and Rockets were fantastic and did Yin and Yang the Flowerpot man and The Bubbleheads for an encore.

But I think I also have the concert tee somewhere.

I have seen Radiohead one time.  It was for Pablo Honey though, so I suppose it doesn’t really count.

Love & Rockets with The Pixies opening. Riverfront Coliseum. It was a weird stage setup, not the full coliseum but only a portion of it, and I HATED it because it seemed to ruin the "concert" atmosphere. It was still a great show tho.

Twentyshots, I wish I had a Pixies tee - I got a L&R shirt.

Off topic, but isn't it nuts how much old concert shirts go for now? $425 on Etsy for that Pixies shirt is insane! Quality investment, mind, but still.

I rarely bought concert tees.  I just ended up with them.  Sometimes you’d find one or they’d give a few away, or someone you were with bought one and left it in your car.

I’m trying to think what I had.  I had a Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me shirt but I did not go to that show.  I had an Echo and the Bunnymen shirt someone bought me as a gift.  An REM Inside Out.  Jane’s Addiction Nothing’s Shocking, I bought that one. Cocteau Twins because we were walking by pre-show and they offered us shirts for helping them unload their merch from the truck.  Metallica...and Justice For All.  I bought that for someone else but then he owed me for something so just said to keep the shirt which I was fine with.

I have a Lollapooloza shirt that Ice-T gave me, though I cannot prove it’s provenance and I lost it anyway.  That was a weird one.  It was at the end of the show and we had ended up by some kind of tower structure with maybe 5-6 other people.  Maybe it was the mixing board or they coordinated the light show or just a lighting tower.  It was the end of the show so it was Jane’s onstage.  Anyway, I hear this dude yell out to us from the platform  “Awesome show, huh?”  And it was Ice-T.  So we were like “Yeah, it’s great!” Because we were polite like that.  Then he was like “Hold up, come around the back.”  So we did, and the one security guy let us through and Ice-T came out and threw out shirts to everyone.  He watched the show with us, and was really into it.  I remember he knew all the words to 1%.

Rhett Crowe gave me the Guadalcanal Diary t-shirt because Natalie Merchant spilled my drink or something.  Not on purpose.  It was at HFSival and there was this backstage-ish area roped off where the band not performing were hanging out so we went by to checck it out.  10,000 Maniacs was on next or something so Metchant was rushing out from some non-approved exit and I didn’t see her and she knocked into me.  She didn’t stop but she did look back and say “Oh, I’m really sorry” or something which was fair.  So then Rhett Crowe threw me a t-shirt and was like “Here wipe it off with this.”

Midnight Oil shirt.  Someone left it at my house, but I don’t know who.

Dread Zeppelin shirt because I thought it was funny and like the artwork.  That’s probably worth a cool grand, at least.

24-7 Spyz.  Don’t know how I got that one.  Just ended up in my laundry one day.

Fishbone.  Drove a guy to their show, and hiought that for me as thanks.

The Connells Fun and Games.  Whatever Connell dude was cool.  My friend’s band opened for them so we were backstage.  My lasting impression of him is when this other band who were total dicks took all the plastic cups.  So dude was like, “Hey, are there cups anywhere?”  And we said, “No, those assholes ran off with them.”  He was like “Yeah, they seem like tools.”  Then he reached into a nearby garbage can, picked out a cup, poured out the remaining beer, and walked over to the keg, filled it up, and just drank from it.  Not what I was expecting from the Connells.  Nice guy.

Guns N‘ Roses Use Your Illusion. I bought that one.  My friend wanted one and we had to wait in line 15 minutes so by the time we got to there I was like yeah might as well.

Eric Johnson.  Acquired just last week.  My friend bought me a ticketothe show and told me I was going.  He does stuff like that.  So I went.  There was this crazy lady there who was so into Eric Johnson she would like weep openly while singing the lyrics.  Shecame by herself, and was pretty much the only woman there.  So to be polite, I was like “Wow,EricJohnson is fantastic, huh?”  Then she gushed about how much she loves Eric Johnson for like 5 minutes straight and then said Here, take at-shirt.  I’ve got two!  I honestly do not give a fuck about Eric Johnson but it seemed only polite to take it and thank her. Oddly, the shirt does not include the Richmond date.  Eric Johnson is quite good and has always struck me as a nice guy, and he put on a good show and was very nice to his opening act if he is not having sex with her but if he is that is creepy. So I guess I will wear the shirt.  BTW, if you wonder where all the white dudes over 50 who did not vote for Donald Trump are at, they’re at the Eric Johnson show.

this is funny, because i had pretty much the opposite experience with ice-t at a lollapooloza in cleveland. he was walking around in the crowd after his set. he was with a couple of bodyguards and i didn't give a crap either way but knew my brother would love an autograph so i asked him for one. ice-t totally blew me off and said "no way man, everyone will want one" and i was like "i don't even want one.....my brother does" but at that point the wall of meatheads was blocking me from him. he's a weird dude and it is just funny that he and ice cube now play out-of-shape cops on tv.

the jane's addiction shirt you speak of was scandalous because of the 4 boobs....and now i really want a cocteau twins shirt.
kiss me kiss me kiss me was kind of a boring shirt if i recall......the cure should've had WAY better shirts.
i enjoy hearing concert tee stories. i did a comic about the subject that kind of covers some of these issues......

Radiohead! Next Wed at (gasp!) US Bank Arena. Yes, rumor has it that the place is still alive!

My buddy and I scored excellent tickets (all credit to my buddy). So looking forward to this! I don't go to a lot of mainstream concerts these days, but am gladly doing this one. Looking at recent Rdiohead concert setlists, we should be in for a 2 1/2 hr. show or so, with songs from the entire Radiohead catalog.

My first time seeing Radiohead was more than 15 years ago. Where has the time gone <sigh>

Fantastic show all around. Nice to see US Bank Arena filled to the rafters, and check out the set list, wow

Daydreaming
Desert Island Disk
Ful Stop
2 + 2 = 5
Myxomatosis
Kid A
All I Need
Videotape
Lucky
Bloom
Everything in Its Right Place
Lotus Flower
Reckoner
The National Anthem
Idioteque
A Wolf at the Door
How to Disappear Completely

Encore 1:
Decks Dark
The Gloaming
Talk Show Host
There There
No Surprises

Encore 2:
The Bends
Weird Fishes/Arpeggi
Karma Police

I was hoping against hope they'd play Decks Dark, my favorite track from the latest album, which they haven't played a lot on this tour, so I was absolutely ecstatic when they opened the first Encore with it. I was even more amazed they played The Bends to open Encore 2, which I think they don't play often.

What a fantastic evening of music, and having great seats close to the stage certainly didn't hurt.

Caught the last 15 min of the opening set (Junun, a Johnny Greenwood side project), and they sounded great too.

I notice that Let Down seems to have slowly become much more of a single over the years.  And my appreciation for it has risen accordingly.  It's probably my favorite Radiohead song right now.

But I also think if they played songs off OK Computer those could become my favorite Radiohead songs.  The thing with that album is that every song is so good, and every song fits in so well the songs around that you tend to miss individual songs in terms of just hearing everything as part of the collective whole.  The album is so sort of bleakly, sterile-y depressing while somehow at the same time having so many ups and downs that it's an exhausting listen and things get missed.

I kinda missed Let Down because at that point I'm just barely recovered from Paranoid Android and  now I'm having to try and get geared up for Karma Police.

I got stuck listening so someone's junk random Spotify/Pandora playlist recently and Lucky came on. That is a huge emotional gut punch of a song.  And it was written and released pre-OK Computer so it was intended to work as a standalone.  And it does.  But when its in OK Computer, by that point in the album I'm already pretty much just curled up in a fetal position so it just kind washes over me.

You're not wrong, my man.  There's a reason they closed the first encore with No Surprises, the second with Karma Police, and a big highlight of the main portion of the concert was Lucky smack in the middle.  They're all amazing.

"Back in the day" refers primarily to Chris Varias, who reviewed a LOT of shows for the Enquirer, basically everyone who passed through Riverbend and US Bank Arena (which then was called something else), but he also did Bogart and Taft shows, and even the occasional SGH gig. He basically hated pretty much ALL of them and excelled in giving "thumbs down" reviews. I always wondered what made him so negative about all these shows. Then one day, by utter happenstance (and I'm talking probably 15 years ago), I took my daughter to a show at Riverbend, and we ended up sitting right next to him in the Pavilion. So we struck up a conversation, and Varias was the nicest guy you can imagine. The next day (or day after that) his review of the show was in the newspaper. He absolutely demolished whoever it was we saw (I'm thinking it was John Mayer, or maybe Dashboard Confessional, but I could be wrong). While I disagreed with many of Varias' concert reviews, it was still fun to read them and gave you something to think about. Of course, concert attendants are self-selective: you're not going to buy tickets to a show you don't think you're going to enjoy, and most of the time in fact you enjoy it greatly, so you are emotionally invested and biased. Whereas Varias couldn't care less. It was just a job to do.

In sharp contrast with the Enquirer, the Columbus Dispatch did publish a review of Radiohead's show there on Monday:

http://www.dispatch.com/entertainment/20180724/concert-review--radiohead-iconic-band-captivates-diverse-fans

Nothing monumental as such, but pleasant enough. It would've been nice to see something similar about the show in Cincinnati. Alas...

How old were the people at the show, mostly 30+?

I don't know what is more scary to me, the thought of Radiohead as a dinosaur nostalgia act, or the thought that someone under the age of 25 is still listening to Radiohead and attending expensive classic rock stadium shows.

Yes.  We had a 20 year old sitting next to us, but it was definitely mostly 30+.  A couple of 10 year olds here and there.

Varias reviewed the Cincy Blues Fest a few years ago when Webb Wilder headlined on the main stage.  He effusively praised Wilder but said the crowd had dwindled to a "handful" by the time of his set. Not so.  The crowd had dwindled but there were still several dozen people there.  Go figure.

No "Creep"?

Leave out the only thing they've ever done that sounds like a proper song?

Guess you don't care for Radiohead much. Considering their overall catalog, "Creep" is a gimmicky tune (and which they rarely play anymore). Art-pop must not be your thing...

Hot takes!

Creep is a great song and deservedly a classic.  It’s as good as anything in their catalog non-ok computer.  The fact that it sounds nothing like latter day Radiohead does not make it gimmicky.  The progression it is built on has a III and a borrowed iv with a deceptive cadence.  Nothing too, too crazy but I would say it’s still unconventional.  They were already showing their stripes.

Karma Police is pretty much a standard pop song.  The chord progression is a little off-the-beaten path but the structure is pretty much conventional.  Most of their stuff up to ok computer is pretty conventionally structured.  Ok computer has some long songs and interludes and is generally rather concept-y, but there’s nothing too out there on it... other than the genius.

I do not like experimental pop for the most part and the vast majority of Radiohead post Kid A boring.  But even then, it’s wildly overrated.  It’s mostly the same glitchy crap with falsetto crooning that, while not horrible is pretty average.  Admittedly punctuated by ocassional moments of sheer brilliance that I still mostly don’t care for but still have to go daaaaaaaaaamn.  But that’s pretty much the secret.

90% of Radiohead albums are like ornamental grasses.  They’re just there as background to provide some contrast and texture to make the other 10% look good.  That’s how Radiohead have chosen to play it, and it does create a unique listening experience.  But yeah, reviewers who try to go track by track like they’re all good and then try to break it down or whatever are idiots.  Their albums are not structured for that type of listening.

That's your subjective take on it, and my subjective take on it is quite different. I'm not saying that Radiohead is outstanding "track by track". In fact, for me their albums are true albums, as in: not just a collection of songs, but an album listening experience (check: "In Rainbows"). Overall they are one of my favorite bands, dare I call them "mainstream" bands? (Certainly looking at the Billboard charts, they are not.)

But whatever, reasonable people can disagree.

As Buzzstein used to say (and probably still does somewhere that is not here): Hmmm.

I might go more like 70/30, but I understand what you are saying.

In concert, and afterwards in practice, I am struck by how many of their songs are actually not all that unconventional in structure... they just like to throw a lot of different instrumentation or bleeps and bloops in there that throw people off.  Or interludes that are just sort of there.  I am a pretty big fan, but I would still classify a fair bit of their catalog as not my favorite.

i've phased out my concert shirts.  it used to be all i wore.  the only one in heavy rotation is a ryan adams shirt i cut the sleeves off of.  it's got a giant picture of his face on it and it's the only shirt i wear in the summer.  my cousin got it at a show in milwaukee and thought it was hilarious.  are we counting the wolf parade number i cut the sleeves off years ago and now is my painting shirt?  my dad had a sick ass rush shirt that was all torn to shit.  word is brother doesn't know what he did with it

The fact that Thom ("I've suffered for my music, now it's your turn") Yorke is still a revered chancer in today's music industry makes me believe there is no joy in the world. In related news "Get off my motherfucking lawn"

I'm with CR on this.  No one should be putting Thom Yorke on a pedestal for his work with Radiohead*

*Because that honor is reserved for Jonny Greenwood.

I can't quite disagree with that. Jonny Greenwood's work outside the band in recent years, in particular his outstanding movie scores, has been absolutely amazing

I’m not knocking Radiohead so much as the Paste videos and things like that where people try to outdo themselves by finding the most obscure Radiohead songs and proclaiming them to be in fact their greatest work.

What all of us are saying ties in together.  I understand CR’s observation that much of radiohead, particular post ok 2.0 Radiohead stuff are not “songs” per se.  And IMO, most critics and many listeners just come across like pretentious assholes when they try to critique them as conventional songs that Only special, people can understand.

The way you listen to radiohead and the way that Greenwood writes and his influence on the band plus the way they actually title shit like Exit Movie to a Film or Motion Picture Soundtrack seems to indicate that they are heavily influenced by cinematic scores.  And most 2000 radiohead albums should be listened to that way.  They’re not formal concept albums but they are somewhat like the soundtracks to non existent movies

And when you do listen to them like that, they are suddenly not all that experimental.  The weird bloop on this song goes with a similar bleep on that other song.  This sort of random passage is somewhat deliberately out of place here, but it’s part of a running motif of some kind so it makes sense in context of the album.  This track is just sort of setting up the calm before the storm. Etc.

They do have songs which stand on their own, but I think those songs are usually pretty obvious.  They have real lyrics with somewhat clear enunciation instead just Yorke’s falsetto coong and moaning.  The songs have endings, like drums stop, someone hits the tonic chord, DuNh...the end.
Those are intentional centerpieces, IMO.  But they are 1-2 tracks per album.

Whereas when I go back and listen to ok computer I,m surprised joe by how well those songs function as standalone pieces.  Like butter said, there are some odd bloops thrown in but fundamentally there’s a clear structure and familiar chord progressions and what not.

Like, there’s a reason that even though radiohead is easily the biggest indie band in the world and maybe even just the biggest band in the world, you don’t really hear too many latter day Radiohead tracks on the radio.  Even on indie stations.  You hear Karma Police, or Paranoid Android, Fake Plastic Trees, or Creep.  Those were hit singles for a reason. And now they are expanding to deeper tracks like Let Down or whatever.  But not anything from the new albums.

There’s nothing wrong with what radiohead is doing.  I don’t care for it, but that’s just me.  I’m just saying to me they have quite deliberately moved from being a standard-ish rock band with some quirks towards a more concept-y band a la Pink Floyd maybe with running album themes but still mostly standalone tracks to being score composers.  It seems to me to be a very clear and linear evolution.

I love Greenwood’s soundtracks.... because there’s a real movie to go with them.  I have a hard time listening to any sort of orchestral/movie score type soundtracks if I have not seen the movie, whether it is radiohead or not.  And Radiohead's stuff is like a movie soundtrack where I have not seen the movie.
