Title: Fun. - Some Nights
Post by: luisterpaul on February 26, 2012, 07:41:24 AM
OMG. This album is epic. Each song is a huge, sweeping production. It's blowing me away. There are moments that are -- dare I say it? -- reminiscent of Queen. A curious choice they made, though, was the blatant use of auto-tune: It's unmistakable, but somehow it works. Granted, it loses a little momentum towards the end, but it finishes strong on the 10th track. (The bonus material is good, too.)

It's kind of funny that he used to be in The Format.  Not just because of the name, but because that band should have been huge except for their unwillingness to write the BIG POP HIT despite being a pop band on a major label.

It's like he's making up for lost time.  Over the course of an album, it's way too much even for top 40.   If only they could had taken the songs from this album and sprinkled it over the other The Format and fun. albums.

definitely some queen in there...i also hear some supertramp and other oddballs...but honestly too many ingredients to count. it's that mishmash that kept me listening longer than i thought, but it's the maroon 5 and the like that's putting up a wall...

i'd even say that this is the musical equivalent to high fructose corn syrup. there's an XTREME, big synthetic flavor to it that is sure to please, but i don't know how satisfying it is beyond the initial dose...

Indeed, time will tell if it has real staying power, but I gotta say, those first few tracks thoroughly grab hold of me and refuse to let me go.

I'm digging it for now, but I think in 9 months, it will be totally forgotten.  They are a great 1 hit wonder band, because they are so fun and unique and poppy, but the veryt hings that make me like them now also means I probably won't care about them in a year.

They could be forgotten in 9 months by the mainstream audience they're obviously gunning for, but it's hard to call Nate Ruess a one hit wonder when he already has three solid albums under his belt.

He's not really doing anything different than he's done before.  They just dressed it up with a ton of pop-trappings.  In some cases the bigger sound helps or at least makes them more radio-friendly without taking anything away.  But they just went way overboard with it.

But fundamentally they've always been a good powerpop band with glam/arena trappings and they still are.  Go back and listen to The Format's Dog problems or Aim and Ignite.  Those were and still are very good albums.

I remember Aim And Ignite not doing anything for me. I'll have to go back and try again.

Garbage.

Aim and Ignite is sort of the opposite of this.  It's got all the same somewhat disparate influences mashed up in one pop palette.  If you listen to it enough times, the songwriting skill becomes evident, but there's not enough catchiness for it to grab your attention and make you do that.  It's really more for super powerpop geeks who get off on all the small, clever details of a well-crafted song even if it's not that catchy.

But yeah, if you go back and listen to it now you can hear how it's really very similar.  That's why I think the glossy pop production is not really a bad thing.  I just wish they hadn't dialed it to 100% on every single track.

x3. Of course, I'm only three songs in, but I'm still waiting for something to happen. The autotune may have done it.

Yeah, I said on the other thread that I could see how the autotune and all that is just going to kill it for a lot of people.

The sad part, the guy can sing perfectly well.  They just thought it was a cool effect, for some unknown reason.  At this point everyone-- even those a couple years behind the mainstream-- is tired of it.

The Freddy Mercury and over auto-tune bits bug the hell out of me. I usually like a choir but not here. I do appreciate We Are Young, but after that . . . bleh. Go listen to Team Me.

PS: Their Columbus show has been moved from The Newport to Lifestyles so they obviously have a favor people like.

I don't like pop music enough to really enjoy this album.  Not really sure what to make of the whole thing.

I don't know.  I saw them on Letterman and it was not the best vocal perfomance.  I get the auto tune for artistic effect thing, but I think the usage here detracts from the album, particularly on Stars.  However, overall I didn't notice it very much.  I was expecting it constantly throughout the album.  Polica did that and as much as I like everything else they did I just can't listen to it.  I think it's gotten to a point where you have to be really, really smart about how you use auto tune... or be T-Pain, I guess.

Listened to it this past weekend at the listening station at Shake It. Couldn't really get into it. That hit single (which is now No.1 on the Billboard 100 I think) is supposed to remind us of Queen. I didn't hear Queen in it at all. Maybe we are talking about another queen of some sort  ???

The 1st track reminded me of Queen, but that was it.

The three or four songs I listened to sounded like movie scores or Pepsi commercials. Or something. A little too spit-polished for me.

I'm cooling to the album now. I still love the title track, and Why Am I The One is pretty good, but the rest is just alright. I can't stand One Foot.
