Title: Fiona Apple - The Idler Wheel
Post by: euro60 on June 18, 2012, 10:57:55 PM
I'm a Fiona fan from the very first hour (now 16 years ago).

Never saw this one coming. I mean, yes I had known the album it was coming since last Fall, and was really excited about it. Now that I've heard it, I must say this is about as radical a departure from previous albums that I've ever heard. The cynic in me would say "Fiona couldn't afford to bring the band". This is mostly Fiona and piano, period. Not a single mildely rocking tune on the album. What a departure. It's not a bad album obviously, but I was not prepared for such a departure from the earlier sound.

Anyone else been listening to it?

One listen so far. It was at work on cheap pc speakers, so that probably wasn't a fair listen, but I was unimpressed. Nothing really grabbed me until the end. I'll try again at home where I can give it a proper listen.

I like Fiona Apple okay, and I think this album is alright.

She's no Lana Del Rey though, that's for sure.

Obviously you're not a golfer.

If you're looking to repetitively hear someone have a mental breakdown in front of a microphone, go ahead and keep this album in your collection for eternity. This disjointed trainwreck is about as pleasantly flowing and cohesive as sandpaper underwear.

Purchase. Listen. Delete. Sell. Recover.

That's the five step process when it comes to TIWIWTtDotSaWCWSYMTRWED. Anything more than that and you're only fooling yourself.

I freakin' LOOOOOOOOOOOVE "Hot Knife" but I haven't heard much else from the album. Your reactions are making me sad. But, I'll still check it out on my own.

I didn't hear any songs that I didn't enjoy. When I first played "Daredevil", I ended up repeating it at least 5 times afterward.

"Seek me out....look at me....I'm all the fishes in the sea." Fuck me.

If I'm a fool, Four, I'm your fool.

I guess we just don't see eye to eye on some things. Still best friends forever?  8)

Anyone who says "still BFF?" is someone you should run away from, as fast as your legs can carry you, I tell ya  ;)

That said, I now have tickets to 3 of Fiona's upcoming shows, including 3rd row in Indy and 6th row at the Aronoff. Life is good.

Not that I was super-surprised about this, but I just listened to her interview on WTF and she is nutty as a fruitcake.

HUMMINGBIRD POOP.

I had to let someone borrow this CD to get it out of my car. I needed a break from it. OBSESSION. I'm still singing it daily, even without listening to the album.

I must live in a different universe (music-wise). I thought then when this came out (and still think now) this was a terrible album, by far (by a mile or 2) that this is Fiona's weakest album--and I'm saying this as a Fiona first hour fan, going back to the mid-90s.

28, 25, 15, 7.  All so great.

But #15 should really by in the top 5.

Blondie @ #51? And even worse, Pretenders @ #94?

Ugh...crap list is a crap list.

I'm most confused the Bella Donna by Stevie Nicks is a slots higher than Rumours. Unless you are punishing Fleetwood Mac for not being entirely female led (in which case they just shouldn't be on the list), there is no universe in which Bella Donna is better than the juggernaut that is Rumours.

I never know how to feel about Tapestry.  Carole King is one of the greatest songwriters ever.  But honestly, Tapestry isn't that great even though the songs on it are.  It just feels kind of 70's radio blah and over-polished.

The only song I really like on it is You've Got a Friend, but that was ruined for me long ago by having had to listen to James Taylor's mega-shitty version of it so many times.

That list kind of sucks.  It feels like they half just copied off the critics list so they wouldn't seem unhip, and then they just threw in stuff they actually listen to.  Which would have been fine, actually.  I don't think critics should necessarily dictate.  But it feels kind of dishonest the way it's half high-brow and half low-brow.

I have to question how many NPR listeners are really big fans of say, Heaven or Las Vegas.  Because I mean, that is right in my wheelhouse in terms of musical knowledge.  1990, 4AD?  I would say Cocteau Twins was less big than Throwing Muses at that time.  Plus, I just happen to be a huge fan of both Hirsh and Donelly and quite a few of the 4AD artists of that time.  Before I gave all my CD's away, I think I had everything by both of them.  So, if I found out someone was a huge Throwing Muses or Cocteau Twins fan, it would register.  It never happens.

And I never hear Cocteau Twins on the radio, either.  I hear Belly ten times more than Cocteau Twins.  And that first Belly album was and is pretty highly critically acclaimed.  And yet is nowhere on that list.

The screechbitch isnít on there, is she?

Rumour had it she once had her voice insured for a million quid, but no one knows whatís she done with the money.
