Title: taft ballroom
Post by: pourmesometea on September 02, 2012, 03:18:54 PM
i went to this venue for the first time last night, it's a good room.  small crowd for the legendary shack shakers, they are so much fun. not sure why i haven't been there before this, i was comfy there.

it's a nice room. the sound is good. the stage is high enough. the room is wide enough that it's hard not to get a good view. bartenders are friendly and remember what i have had to drink month after month. worst thing i can say is that the room isn't all that interesting ( and who cares) and that nobody seems to be interesting in the booking. some things upstairs could stand to come downstairs.

I think I saw Tori Amos there many years ago. We were in the balcony and I remember it being somewhat vertiginous but otherwise a nice room.

You are thinking of the Taft Theater main room.  Tori played there for the Under the Pink tour.  I still remember dragging my ass out there with a 102 degree fever because I refused to miss it.

The ballroom opened up I think just this year (at least I hadn't heard about it until after the SGH closed).  It is essentially the basement of the Taft.

You are right Dirk. The Taft Ballroom opened about a year ago, I think.

The Taft main theatre indeed has been the site of many, many memorable sets over the years. Saw Fiona Apple there on her first major tour (96 or 97), Beck on his crazy Midnite Vultures tour (99?), Laura Anderson (95?) etc. I really need to check my concert log list!

Ah. Thanks. I was thinking I might be confused but when I Google "Taft Ballroom" it took me to the Taft Theatre page and I didn't see any mention of the ballroom so I assumed it was the same space.

the only way you can see what's playing in the ballroom vs the theatre is to click on the link. there will be a note near the bottom reading "this show is in the ballroom" +/-. There have been several shows i got excited for and then found out they were in the theatre, like ingrid michaelson and toad the wet sprocket.

I was really surprised to see Toad the Wet Sprocket booked in the main theatre. Do they really expect to sell anywhere close to the 2,500 capacity of the main theatre for this?

Agreed. I saw them a couple time way back when and I don't remember them playing rooms much bigger than that when they were at their most popular.

So physically, where is the ballroom?  I only wonder because many, many moons ago I went to the Taft main room with my dad for a talk with Chris Sabo. After the talking ended we all were moved over to the Masons Lodge next door through the tunnels under the complex.  Somewhere below street level is a huge train set. Yeah, that was an awesome night for a young kid.

Oh yeah, I am posting this. Found it while looking for info. Some day I will reach this level of awesome.

it not too difficult to get to. directly the main foyer is similar room with a small bar and access to large bathrooms. on the south end of that room are steps the go down another story under the cheap seats. whoever's cell phone service works down there wins.

Only had to pay $4 in Ticketbastard "convenience" charges, so that was a first.

Online (I of course chose to print the tix rather than paying the willcall fee as well as skipped some BS $7 "ticket insurance").

I couldn't make it to the window since they're only open 11-3 and prices go up DOS.  Do you only pay face value at the window or is it the same way?

i think it's $2 if anything plus you have a real ticket to put in the back of your cd case . . . for those who still have cds.

The show was really poorly attended.  I could understand people not wanting to pay $15 for them when they're the quintessential type of live show that someone would describe as "boring", and then there were the Halloween parties and the like on Saturday, but there were about 50 people at the venue, which was well less than a fourth of the ballroom.  Kind of bizarre to see.  When the Sea and Cake took the stage there wasn't even a regular ovation for them, just 4 or 5 claps spread out through the gigantic room.  I kind of felt bad for them.  But they trudged through and even came back for an encore.  Good show, especially watching John McEntire (also of Tortoise) on drums.  Disappointingly they didn't play anything from Oui but Jacking the Ball and The Argument were highlights.

Also the opener that greeted the small crowd was Matthew Friedberger, the brother from brother/sister duo The Fiery Furnaces (who I actually still like, esp. Blueberry Boat).  His solo performance was telling a "40-minute ghost story" where he would tell a story/comedy bit about working in a graveyard and getting visits from his great grandmother in his dreams which would occasionally turn into opera ballads and walking around the stage to sometimes sit down and play a keyboard and synth and a couple of bass solos.  It wasn't as bad as this probably sounds but it was still bad.

Thursday July 10, 2014--Scott Miller (solo, without The Commonwealth) will be appearing at the Taft Ballroom.  Unless I get some crisis at work, I'll be there.  It's hard to beat $12.00 advance tickets ($15.00 day of show)

I haven't heard a lot by this band but everything I've heard has been good.  And it's hard to beat the pre-day of show price of $12.00.  Yes, this one just might be a go...

I might.  I haven't made my mind up about her music.  I like Desire, and the male in me appreciated her lack of trousers in the video.  The only other song I've heard by her didn't impress me at all.  I'll have to check out more of her songs.

My personal favorites are Adelaide, Poison, Desire, Go, Make A Shadow and if you were into The Cranberries, Heart Heart Head.

Thanks for the suggestions, Tayfo, but I'm not exactly a Cranberries partisan.

drjohn, I hadn't heart a single song of Meg Myers when I saw her in concert the first time (at Bunbury 2014), so not knowing the songs isn't an issue. Her stage presence is so intense that she will simply blow you away, period.

If it is of any interest, here a link of my Amazon review of her 2014 EP Make A Shadow (mine is the first showing up):

http://www.amazon.com/Make-Shadow-Explicit-Meg-Myers/dp/B00I9FE3B0/ref=sr_1_1?s=dmusic&ie=UTF8&qid=1440644691&sr=1-1&keywords=meg+myers+make+a+shadow

And I disagree with TayFo on the Cranberries comparison. I don't see any of that at all. To me it's more a Fiona Apple/Tori Amos/Alanis kinda thing.

So looking forward to her debut album (coming out Sept 18) and of course the Taft show.

Thanks for the info.  I'm rather middle aged, cynical and hard to blow away, but maybe she's up to the task.  Your view of Ms. Myers is different from a couple of people on another message board or Facebook page who compared her to Stevie Nicks.  They meant the comparison as a compliment.  I saw it as an insult.  Even my limited exposure to Ms. Myers convinces me she could eat Stevie Nicks' lunch.

X2 (to a degree)

Where does the Steve Nicks comparison come from, I wonder? Meg Myers is nothing like Stevie Nicks, be it musically, style-wise, intensity-wise, voice-wise. Perhaps the only point of comparison that I could possibly see is that both are (in Nicks' case: was) rather petite.
Title: Re: taft ballroom
Post by: Drjohnrock on August 28, 2015, 03:13:55 PM
They meant it musically.  I don't see how they are alike either, unless it would have to do with neither of them writing straightforward "Oh baby I love you" stuff.  But that isn't much of a similarity.

They most be on more drugs than Stevie Nicks.

Hell of a show last night from Meg Myers, although not quite as intense as last year's show at Bunbury (in my opinion). Maybe it's because I didn't know what to expect last year, and I did this time around.

I also noticed that Meg is now sporting a prominent engagement ring, which I assume means that she is spoken for. Or worse, that she's happy now. Say goodbye to the angry young woman! And goodbye to her muse!

Well, you can always hope she has a little Mark E. Smith in her.  None of The Fall frontman's three marriages, including his current one, have succeeded in turning him into Mr. Rogers.

Pollstar says Low is coming to the Taft (I would think they would be in the ballroom) on Friday January 29, 2016.  I might be a bit premature in posting this--the gig doesn't appear on either the band's or the Taft's website--but it fits in with the tour routing.  And I'm excited about a decent veteran band coming to town on a night when I have a good chance of being able to attend.

Sadly, I've given up on it as well.  The moral of the story:  Pollstar is a useful website, but always confirm elsewhere any concerts they list that interest you.
