Title: Leggy
Post by: euro60 on November 19, 2014, 05:55:07 PM
Nice plug for my daughter's band from this week's CityBeat:

• Cincy “Bubblegum Punk” trio Leggy are set to go international in a few weeks, taking their winter tour to the East Coast and then traveling to play Canada for the first time. The band, which issued its debut release, the excellent, infectious six-song Cavity Castle, earlier this year (listen to/purchase it at  leggy.bandcamp.com), will kick off its tour with a hometown show Saturday at MOTR Pub (1345 Main St., Over-the-Rhine, motrpub.com). Detroit’s Palaces kick off the free show at 10 p.m.

Here are the tour dates for what Leggy is calling its "Winter Babies Tour" (never mind that this is still Fall):

November 22 - Cincinnati, OH @ MOTR
November 23 - Athens, OH @ Bat Lounge
November 24 - Washington, DC @ The Pinch
November 26 - Baltimore, MD @ @ WINDUP
November 28 - Brooklyn, NY @  PALISADES
November 30 - Manhattan, NY @ Cake Shop
December 1 - Philadelphia, PA @ Hazard Hall
December 2 - Boston, MA @ House Show
December 3 - Easthampton, MA @ Flywheel
December 4 - Montreal, QC @ Barfly
December 5 - Toronto, ON @ Silver Dollar Room
December 6 - London, ON @ House Show
December 7 - Windsor, ON @ Phog Lounge
December 8 - Kalamazoo, MI @ LOUIE'S TROPHY ROOM
December 9 - Columbus, OH @ Ace of Cups
December 10 - Lexington, KY @ Best Friend Bar

The 2015 Cincinnati Entertainment Awards nominations have just been announced:

New Artist of the Year: Dream Tiger; Honeyspiders; PRIM; Elk Creek; Leggy; Noah Smith

Also this, from CityBeat:

Like the past couple years, there will be a “Best New Bands” showcase leading up to the CEA ceremony featuring performers from the “New Artist of the Year” category (as well as other worthy newcomers). The Best New Bands showcase returns to Bogart’s on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, and will coincide with CityBeat’s Best New Bands issue, profiling the New Artist nominees.

I am excited for my daughter  8)

This week's CityBeat cover story is "Best New Bands 2015", covering and profiling the 6 nominees for the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards' Best New Artist of the Year category, including Leggy:

http://citybeat.com/cincinnati/article-31936-leggy-pop.html

As a reminder, these 6 play at Bogart's this coming Saturday Jan 17   in the "Best New Bands 2015" showcase. I have it on good inside information that Leggy plays at 10 on the dot  ;)

Tix for the Bogart's show are just $5.

Well that was quite the event at Bogart's on Saturday. Frankly, I was fearing the worst (attendance-wise). Got there at 9:30 and was shocked to see the place bustling and with a huge crowd on hand. I'm guessing 750-1,000 people? My daughter told me that was quite normal (based on what she saw last year, she tells me). Leggy came on at 10:30 and I thought they put on a great set (but of course I'm biased). By far the largest crowd they've played to so far. Fun all around.

Leggy just got back from Tennessee, Texas and Oklahoma, and the next shows are just around the corner. For us locals here in Cincinnati, besides gigs at The Comet and Tacocracy, there is one particular great opportunity coming up:

 Coleen Green, Upset, Leggy
 Sunday, April 12, 2015  9:00 pm
 The Woodward Theater
Doors at 8:00PM, Show at 9:00PM
 Ages 21+
$6 advance, $8 day of show

Leggy plays first, which is awesome for me (ol' guy). My daughter tells me that Coleen Green and Upset are both very good. By the way, Upset is former Vivian Girls and Best Coast drummer with ex-Hole drummer Patty Schemel.

Other upcoming dates:

3/22 @ Haymarket (Louisville, KY) w/ Ted Tyro

3/23 @ Springwater Supper Club (Nashville, TN)

3/24 @ The Comet w/ Swim Team, Mexican Slang (Toronto)

3/28 @ Tacocracy w/ Earth Girls (CHI), Vacation

4/12 @ Woodward Theater w/ Colleen Green (LA) + Upset (LA)

4/17 @ The Big House (Bloomington, IN) w/ Slushy (CHI) + The Chives

4/18 @ House Show (Bowling Green, OH) w/ Slushy (CHI)

4/19 @ Best Friend Bar (Lexington, KY) w/ Slushy (CHI)

5/22 @ Ace of Cups (Columbus, OH) w/ Chain and The Gang (DC)

The new EP "Nice Try" is getting some nice attention on internet. If you haven't heard it yet, check it out: http://leggy.bandcamp.com/  (Physical CDs of the EP are now available at their shows.)

I saw Leggy play last night at Diabolical Records in Salt Lake City. They blew threw about ten songs with great ferocity, my ears are still ringing. They sounded so good live and Veronique's voice is for real. I think the highlight of their set was watching the drummer play. He's pretty badass behind the kit.

Glad to hear you enjoyed their set!

Chris (the drummer) is pretty awesome indeed.

They are "rounding third". Not quite "heading for home" just yet (5 more shows and cities to go on this tour).

Veronique texted me that they shot a music video in LA (for their song "Peach"). Not sure when that will be unleashed upon the world.

All that aside, I'm pretty sure they are having the time of their lives.

CityBeat's official guide to MPMF contains a ton of information on the bands in the line-up

http://citybeat.com/cincinnati/article-33577-mpmf15_schedule_friday_sept_25.html

Here is what they have to say about Leggy:

MOTR

 9:30 p.m. Leggy (Cincinnati)

Indie Rock/Garage Pop

When Veronique Allaer didn’t die from a fall off a three-story building two years ago, she picked up her long-neglected guitar and started Leggy. Seems like a logical choice, particularly when she included best friend/bass master Kirstin Bladh and hammer-to-anvil drum-killer Chris Campbell. For its fresh efforts, Leggy was nominated for a Best New Artist Cincinnati Entertainment Award earlier this year. Not long after, the trio dropped a new six-song EP, the stellar Nice Try, a fittingly effervescent companion piece to Leggy’s infectious 2014 debut, Cavity Castle, both recorded and mixed by John Hoffman and Jerri Queen (of Tweens and Vacation). Flush the Xanax and skip the daddy-didn’t-love-me-enough therapy session; if you want to feel good/better/best, get yourself some Leggy.

YDIIYD: Lana Del Ray fronts The Vines for St. Vincent’s garage-warming party.

Only 10 more days to go!!

Earlier this afternoon on Trash Flow Radio, Ken played a Hateflirt track and talked about euro 60's daughter's participation in both that band and Leggy.  I think he also mentioned an upcoming Leggy gig, though I can't be sure as I was driving and attempting to dodge a vehicle driven by a less-than-skilled fellow motorist.  Good man that Ken, supporting and promoting local musicians in addition to national-level acts.

The WAIF experience today was the bomb! I texted my daughter whether she wouldn't mind if I came along just for the heck of it. She didn't.

So I showed up at 3 pm this afternoon. We came into the studio, and Leggy started setting up. Technical problems ensued. Meanwhile, Trash Flow Radio host Ken kept the songs going on air. Finally at 4:15 pm, everything was ready. I was in the next door studio, which has a look-through window, and when Leggy started playing, it sounded terrible from where I was. Was Veronique's vocals even coming through? Nobody know for sure. Ken came over to me, and said, why don't you check in your car how it sounds. So I did, and in my car, it sounded just great.

Back to the studio. Leggy played about 7 or 8 songs, followed by an on-air interview by Ken.

Couple of things: I had been listening to WAIF on and off in recent months. But my appreciation for WAIF went to an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10 after today. Not simply because they played Leggy. Ken played some amazing tunes before Leggy played, all on the fly. No corporate rock. It reminds me of how WOXY DJs used to play music. Whatever came to their mind and taste, on the spur of the moment.

I imagine that WOXY would've played Leggy a lot if WOXY was still around. But for now, we'll do with WAIF.

I heard the last two live songs they played while driving around on errands today.  The sound was fine.  And I must admit I liked the music.  Glad you liked the tunes Ken played.  I have to admit he's a better dj than I ever was even though we share the same general tastes in music.

You probably don't know the answer to this, but I'll ask anyway:

Is that Brooklyn date something I can buy a ticket to go see? I've never heard of this place and their website (http://liveatsheastadium.com/) implies to me some of their gigs are for recording purposes, but other gigs have a listing of "doors at 8" which means that perhaps they are open to the public? I'm really confused, actually, since this gig is not on their site yet.

Dan, I'm going to ask Veronique. But if it's on their itinerary, this will most certainly happen, and I am also 99% certain that this is open to the public at large.

I'll let you know (it may not be until after Christmas, as I don't think I'll see her before then.)

Leggy's new EP "Dang!" (officially out in January) is previewed with the release of new song "Even Lana". Check it out in this fun She Shreds Magazine article and interview:

http://sheshredsmag.com/3123-2/

Leggy is doing a quick tour of some NE cities in early January:

Jan 8 : Detroit @ Secret Friends Fest
Jan 9 : Buffalo @ Dreamland
Jan 10 : Brooklyn @ Shea Stadium
Jan 11 : Philadelphia @ TBA ****
Jan 12 : Pittsburgh @ Gooski's

Many more tour dates to follow in support of "Dang!"

Thanks for the heads up. We checked them out last night in a part of Brooklyn that I rarely think about and never visit. My wife said they are a cross between The Ramones and The Donnas. Didn't get a chance to say hi, but it was fun to get out and see them.

Thanks for the kind comments, Dan! You really should've said hello to Veronique, she would've loved to hear from you guys.

I was "off the Randomville grid" for a couple of weeks, but there's been some nice comments in the press (paper, and on-line) about the new EP and Leggy recently, none more so than the Boston Globe (yea, THE Boston Globe), "2016 artists to watch", listed alphabetically:

http://www.bostonglobe.com/arts/2015/12/30/the-artists-look-forward-hearing-this-year/fZ8fkbOl9hFfXCx4XmwNdL/story.html

The Enquirer and also CityBeat are going to have something in the days to come, I'm told.

And this Friday the 15th there is the 'official' homecoming EP Release gig at MOTR. Leggy is headlining so they'll play around midnight, but I promised Veronique I'd be there...

We couldn't - I didn't know which one she was beforehand and afterward we caught a rarely running bus with 1 minute to spare. The timing just didn't work out (plus, it was a school night and we're old, but that's another story).

You're a trooper for making all those late night shows!

And here's a terrible photo I took with my crappy phone:

Forgot to poste a link to the newly released EP "Dang":

http://leggy.bandcamp.com/

Also, I mentioned that Leggy is nominated for Artist of the Year and Punk Band of the Year for the upcoming CityBeat Cincinnati Entertainment Awards. The Artist of the Year winner is selected by a secretive panel, but the public at large can vote for Punk Band of the Year. Whichever Punk nominee gets the most votes, wins. It's that simple.

If you feel so inclined, please vote for Leggy!

Nice blurb in the new CityBeat (out today):

Raggedly poppy, punky trio Leggy wraps up its current Midwest/East Coast tour Friday with a free homecoming show at MOTR Pub (1345 Main St., Over-the-Rhine, motrpub.com). Joining the group for the 10 p.m. event are Philly’s Free Cake for Every Creature and new local band Fun Machine. The show will also serve as a hometown release party for Leggy’s great new EP, Dang.

Following two self-released EPs, Dang was issued on cassette through Manic Static, the Illinois-based label that has put out recordings by Chicago buzz bands like Ne Hi and Twin Peaks. The EP was premiered on Jan. 8 on the popular Noisey site. Just four quick songs long, Dang is a blissful blur of trashy, slashing guitars, insistent, primal rhythms and a boatload of soaring, sassy hooks, tied together by an exuberant energy and charisma that is hard to resist.

Dang (and the rest of Leggy’s discography) is available now at leggy.bandcamp.com.

Leggy is in the swing of things at SXSW. They're doing 7 shows there, of which 2 are an official SXSW showcase, and 5 are in places not officially sanctioned by SXSW (but happily organizing gigs while riding SXSW's coattails).

From what I'm hearing, it must be quite the insane but oh-so-enjoyable experience... Ah, to be young!!

I was going to reach out to you when I saw that Southampton was on the schedule. Any intel would be appreciated so I can share it with the girls.

To be honest, I think they are a bit over their heads right now. My daughter has been to the UK many times, in fact studied at Kings College for 5 months back in 2011, but this is a whole different ballgame. They'll be driving around on the tour to all these places. I am an experienced driver and, frankly, would be terrified at the idea of driving "UK style" a/k/a "on the wrong side of the road". And that's just one of their challenges. But obviously it's a great opportunity to advance their musical career.

Old pub. Very old pub. Been doing concerts since the 60's and has featured some very big names along the way. (Radiohead, Manics, Oasis) I'm guessing a couple of hundred capacity. Respected venue. Near the Saints stadium in an area that used to be WELL dodgy but seems to have cleaned itself up somewhat. I have no idea who owns or who is running the place these days but it was always VERY accommodating for artists and punters alike when I was running the Virgin store in Southampton. There, Talking Heads or The Brook are probably the three best venues for a band like Leggy in the city.

Opening all of those dates for a solid, veteran band like Shonen Knife is a great opportunity for Leggy.  They stand to make a lot of fans across the pond.

Agreed.

By the way Trash Radio's Ken Katlin is the one who made the initial connection between Leggy and Damnably Records! Bless and love that guy.

I will be at a couple of the UK shows: April 25 in London (the album release party, although I have no idea how that is going to turn out, since nobody knows them in London), and the gigs in Edinburgh and Glasgow when they open for Shonen Knife.

Whatever happens, it'll be an adventure for them (at times into the unknown). Ahh, to be young!

The Leggy girls are currently in Southampton and terrorizing the neighborhood. I hope those local Christian boys have been locked up and shielded accordingly ;-)

I don't think Yacht Side is very good in posting these things,,, it was announced on Leggy's facebook a while back, and again the other day.

Anyway, there was a nice crowd for this, and Leggy absolutely killed it IMHO. The 2 new songs were great.

I couldn't believe how many people there were at Fifty Fest. Hundreds and hundreds. Fifty West had a cop control the traffic flow, it was that bad on Wooster Pike. Best of all, the rain held off. Also caught Multimagic and Common Cause.

Next up for Leggy: MidPoint this Friday, 6:45 pm at the FREE Eli's BBQ Stage, 14th & Sycamore.

Just think of it as a bonus opener for the Wussy show later at the Woodward.

But hey, don't take my word for it:

Might see you at Leggy on Friday, Euro. I'm hoping to catch a bit of James Hunter 6 first but am planning to swing by the Eli's stage for the last 15-25 minutes of Leggy's set since I don't have anywhere else to be until Tokyo Police Club plays at 8:30.

Fun cover from Leggy of the What Four's "I'm Gonna Destroy That Boy" from way back in the 60s, released this week on some obscure compilation:

Meanwhile, Leggy is playing this Sunday at 5 pm as part of an all-day benefit show at the SGH Revival:

So you have the choice between running up frustration while watching the early part of the Bengals football game (kick-off 4:30 pm), or checking out some good music and help a good cause.

Brand new "official" video for one of Leggy's best songs from their debut album, "Bruises"

http://www.goldflakepaint.co.uk/video-premiere-leggy-bruises/

Premiered in England, where they are more popular than in the States apparently (which I witnessed first hand, when I caught them over 4 shows back in April when they were touring there, the audiences' response was really amazing)

Good for them.  I've never been to Nelsonfest but have spoken to a number of people who have and whose opinion I respect. From what they have told me, it's a better festival than Bunbury in a lot of ways.

Leggy toured with Alice Bag last year, and a budding documentarian in Phillie got some seed money to make a documentary, which now is out as "We're Here, We're Present: Women in Punk" (it runs 14 min.)

Pretty interesting actually.

FYI Leggy is playing at the Woodward this coming Sunday, July 30. Also on the bill: Cherry Glazerr; Mannequin Pussy. Tix are $12

Meanwhile, Leggy's Audiotree session from last month is now up:

video (27 min.) is here: https://audiotree.tv/session/leggy

audio (14 min.) is here: https://leggy.bandcamp.com/album/leggy-audiotree-live
and also here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/leggy-on-audiotree-live-ep/id1259639179

I kinda like how Audiotree describes/introduces Leggy:

Leggy is a feminist trio who speak openly about consent, self-worth, sexuality and female empowerment. They're fronted by longtime friends and band-mates Veronique and Kerstin, whose sputtering vocal delivery is often shouted in unison to amp up each punchy tune. Check out the performance if you're looking for dreamy garage punk that's aggressive, melodic and meaningful.

Band Members
Veronique Allaer - Guitar and Vocals
Kerstin Bladh - Bass and Vocals
Chris Campbell - Drums

THIS IS AN ALL AGES VID BEFORE 9pm!!!!

Incidentally, the unreleased song is Not What You Need, a terrific tune.

If you are looking for a cool Christmas present for your loved one(s) or even for yourself, look no further!

Leggy's debut album is finally being released on vinyl (and the album also has been remastered).

You can choose from a pink vinyl or from a clear vinyl.

More details from Leggy's UK label Damnably:

I have to say, the Leggy/Boytoy doubleheader (with Mardou opening) at Urban Artifact was one of the best shows I've been to in a loooooong time.

So much so, that I just had to do it again last night in Columbus. Not quite as good as at UA, but still very much worth the drive to Cbus.

The April issue of Cincinnati Magazine is called The Music Issue. If you are a subscriber (like I am), you probably just got it in the mail.

For the rest of you: The National is on the cover. Tons of great articles, 25 pages in total, including on history, festivals, non-ticketed and ticketed venues, record stores, institutions, and profiling some artists. Bootsy Collins. Chuck Cleaver. And you may have heard of this band:

(The print version is a lot cooler actually, but oh well...)

I heard somewhere that there are actually 2 different covers, one is the National (which I have gotten), and the other is Walk the Moon.

Speaking of gigs that many may not be aware of, Calvin Johnson is doing at free show at Black Plastic Records in OTR on Tuesday (May 1), starting at at 7:00 PM sharp, they say.  Although free, donations are encouraged.  I have a hectic week at work but I'm going to try to be there.

WHOA!? REALLY!? Damn, he and I used to be pen pals BITD. I'm sure he wouldn't remember (it was like, late 80s when he was doing K Records/Some Velvet Sidewalk) but I think I may wander over and say 'hi.' I had no idea he was still making music. <3

thanks for the heads up DrJ!

Calvin Johnson!

I saw Dub Narcotic Sound System in 1998 at Ripleys Alive! He actually said to the audience, "this is the last time everyone in this room will ever be in a room together." Not that deep, but to my impressionable mind I loved it. I have thought that same thought often, about subway cars, movie theaters, whatever.

He actually followed that thought with "At least not until we reach that great big Ripley's in the sky." Shortly after that....Ripley's closed and turned into a Chipotle.

Yes, my daughter mentioned it to me a while back. They are excited to be on the Cropped Out bill.

I don't know what day they are on, but when I do I'll let you know.

They have every reason to be excited.  It's a very well run festival.   I've never heard anything but praise from any act that's played there.  That's probably because the guy who puts it on is in a band himself and knows the importance of minimizing hassles.

euro, didn't know where to post this so you'd see it, so this seemed like the best place.

i play in a bar trivia league. we made the finals which were sunday, placed 7th!

there was a question: in what country is walloon used as a language?

there was some post where you explained the regional differences in belgium and the languages used. somehow i remembered your post and argued for belgium over spain, france, and portugal. so, thanks for all of that way back when!

Good for you Notorious.

Just to be clear: "Walloon" is not an actual/official language. It's French, period. So in Wallonia, the southern region of Belgium, people speak French.

Just like "Flemish" is not an actual/official language. It's Dutch, period. So in Flanders, the northern region of Belgium, people speak Dutch.

As previously indicated in this thread, Leggy will be playing this year's Cropped Out Festival in Louisville.  The date and time of their set are now confirmed on the festival's schedule.

http://www.croppedoutmusic.com/

Leggy will play from 3:25 PM to 3:50 PM on Friday October 5, the first day of the two day festival.  They are playing on one of the two bigger stages, which is nice--the smaller two tend to get cramped.

I started a separate thread on this year's fest. I'll post more about it there.

To be honest, I wasn't a fan at all of the 1st new song "Eden". but "Taffy" hits the 'classic' Leggy sound just perfectly. Enjoy!

MK, I am told (by my daughter) that they have more SXSW gigs to be announced.... I'll post as I get them

As an aside, my daughter has encouraged me to attend SXSW, and I've politely declined. SXSW seem overwhelming to me... Too many people, too much going on. But glad to hear you are going.

I've always wanted to go, but it took Mike Taylor (from WOXY) chewing on me to finally force a commitment. I'll be staying with him and his wife and we've got "resident wristbands" (which are cheapcheapcheap) that give us primary entry to music events and secondary entry to all comedy events.

We've been busy making our lists and are focused on seeing artists we normally wouldn't be able to see, like smaller UK/European/Aussie bands. But we'd like to see a few Cincy acts too, just as a show of support.
