Title: Columbus
Post by: TayFo on December 13, 2014, 10:48:48 PM
There have been a bunch of local venue threads that it seems nearby cities could use one too. I get up to Columbus the most, so here is a little. Right now I can just do weekends, so I won't have everything noteworthy.

12-15 Jungle / Moxy Martinez – The Newport
1-10 The Reverend Horton Heat – Skully’s

FYI: I'm headed to Columbus on Friday to see TV on the Radio.

FYI: I'm heading to the C-Bus on Monday to see Meg Myers.

Then heading back on May 30 to catch the Stones at Ohio Stadium. Looks like it's pretty much sold out, so that's gonna be 75,000 people or so. I'd be interested in getting some tips about where to catch a "park and ride" to the stadium. Any thoughts from our resident Columbusians (I just invented that word)? looking at you Poolio...

If it was on the weekend I'd be there with you on Meg Myers. Full length coming out soon.

Good. I don't want to share Meg with you.  :pirate:

May 30th, eh? Shit, I've got an event at the Wexner Center that night (it's a block away for those keeping track)... Traffic will be awful.

I'll get you transportation information as best as I can. Bus routes can be a little wonky on Saturday nights but I should be able to guide you to something.

ETA: Anyone going to They Might be Giants this weekend?

Well, there's no park & ride for this particular Saturday. But, your best bet is to check COTA's website: http://www.cota.com/ (http://www.cota.com/)

There are a few parking garages nearby and, I am sure, there will be parking at the Schottenstein Center.

If it were me and I were coming from Cinci, I'd look into parking in one of the garages by either Nationwide Arena or in the Short North and catch Route 2 (Local N. High Street) bus up to campus and walking to the stadium.

I'd also check OSU's website for any parking/bus information for that day.

Very helpful, many thanks. I'm gonna plan exactly on doing that (park near Nationwide, take the bus up N. High)

Definitely check the bus times. Especially for the post-concert ride. And check COTA's website, there are a couple other options to get you back to your car in case you miss the Route 2.

I'm not going to be able to go to the Bo Ningen and TVOTR show tonight at the Newport, so I'm looking to shift two tickets.  Any interest?

No?

Why not, dummies?  Bo Ningen is worth the ticket price alone and I guess TVOTR is alright.  Jesus.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hv_A8FiZwU4  <--- Bo Ningen.  They're so fucking good.

Sunday January 17, 2016-Eternal Summers at Ace of Cups.  I don't have to work the next day, hmm...
As an added bonus, they're from Roanoke, Virginia, a town I have a lot of affection for.

I'm taking my daughter to Columbus tomorrow to see one of her favorite bands.  The show is at the A&R Music Bar.  Does anyone have any suggestions on places to park?

There is a lot of parking right in the area. If I remember right, across the street is a garage if you prefer that. I usually park behind the building as there is a large parking lot behind it.

DrJohn, around the corner next to where the baseball park is, you will find on-street parking without much problem. There is also paid parking available in the parking lots there.

I saw Temples there 2 years ago. It's not the greatest place to see a show. Awkward lay-out.

Enjoy your time with your daughter!

I'm one of those too cheap to pay for parking. Maybe a meter for a little bit. Meters are in effect til 10 o'clock and available on Long Street. There's parking on Cozzins and Hanover, but if there's a hockey or baseball game it will be packed. My favorite is Hocking. You park on dirt and have to go under the railroad tracks, but you are almost guaranteed free parking. PS: A&R is above The Basement in the top right corner.

Like everyone else said, there is a pay lot right behind the place, but where's the challenge in that?

Many thanks to you three gents for the advice. I've been to quite a few shows in Columbus over the years but this will be my first time at a PromoWest venue.  Since I'll have my daughter with me I'll probably go with one of the options close to the place that charges $.  But if I ever go to a show there without my wife and/or daughter. I'll certainly check into TayFo's Hocking Street suggestion, since paying for parking doesn't appeal to me, either.

Sunday July 3, 2016--Pere Ubu at Ace Of Cups.  You can always count on them playing Columbus and Cleveland.  It wouldn't kill them to play Cincinnati every once in a while.

In addition to the above show, Ace Of Cups also has coming up:

July 7--Richie Ramone
July 9--4th and 4th Fest
August 4--Frankie Cosmos
September 8--Lydia Loveless
September 15--Guitar Wolf

Unless the lineup has changed, Obnox is opening this show, which I think is an excellent bill. Wish I could go but will be out of town. If you go DrJ, I look forward to your full report. :)

2/11/2017--Webb Wilder, Natalie's
3/3/2017--Jon Langford, Hogan House Productions
4/1/2017--Mark Eitzel and Howe Gelb, Rumba Café

Probably won't be able to make it to Webb's show but the other two are real possibilities.

How is the Rumba Cafe still a going concern?  I've been there several times and I've been the only one (or one of only three or four) in attendance every time.  They don't promote their shows and it's a total dump.

I don't know.  I've never been there before and I don't recall any of my Columbus friends saying anything about the place.  But Eitzel spent a lot of his formative years in Columbus, started his music career there, and has a loyal fan base in the area .  He'll draw a crowd.

Happy Chichester has been added to the bill for this show.  I have no interest in his music but others might.

Coming to Ace Of Cups:

4/13/2017:  Protomartyr
5/9/2017  :  Redd Kross
5/13/2017:  Rocket From The Tombs

Not only does David Thomas have an aversion to having his band Pere Ubu play Cincinnati, he also has an aversion to having his band Rocket From The Tombs play Cincinnati.  What's the matter, David?  I promise Cincy audiences wear as much deodorant as crowds in other cities.  And it's been months since anyone has jumped onto the stage and bit a band's lead singer.

Twenty One Pilots had some sort of lottery for fans to see three shows they are doing at smaller venues in Columbus (Newport Music Hall, The Basement, and Express Live).  My daughter's friend got tickets for the Express Live show so she is going with her.  My questions to those who might know:  How big is this venue?  What's the layout like?  I assume it's better than A&R Music Bar or The Basement.

It's what used to be known as the PromoWest Pavilion. I assume this is the indoor setting, so about 2,000 capacity. Imagine the old SGH but about 3 times as big. Great venue. I've seen a number of shows there over the years. Old guy that I am, I would venture a stake on the upstairs so I can see everything and not have to deal with the crowd, but I imagine your dau and her friend may wanna be in the main downstairs area.

Thanks for the response.  It likely is the indoor version, since the outdoor setting would seem to defeat the smaller venue purpose of the gigs.  But you're right, they would probably want to be down on the main floor. I doubt that the group would try to recreate the stage-at-both-ends setup they do at the arenas, but you never know...

Attention MissKitty:  Richard Buckner is doing a house show tour.  One of the stops is in Columbus on June 6, and he's in Louisville the night before that.  The chances of a loud, obnoxious crowd like that at MOTR a few months ago aren't very good.
