Title: Coming to Ludlow Garage (not a time warp)
Post by: Drjohnrock on June 25, 2015, 10:05:27 PM
September 18, 2015:  Freedy Johnston

When they announced the place was reopening months and months ago, I thought "yeah, right" and promptly forgot about it.  But this gig was listed on www.pollstar.com and is also listed on Johnston's website.  So it's apparently happening.  The location will be quite appealing to a certain forum member...

Ha, saw Freedy back in '94 (or somewhere around then) when he opened up for Sheryl Crow at the Taft. I won the tickets from WOXY!

Living in Clifton I can walk there in under ten minutes. When they said national, regional and local bands I assumed it would end up being the same five locals in a week, but now I have hope. I'd go to this but it's the same night as Death Cab For Cutie.

Advance tickets for Ludlow Garage shows are available at XXXXXXXX.*  Well, at least for national level touring acts.  In addition to Freedy Johnston in September, Matisyahu is coming on October 30.  Not familiar with that artist's music but others might be.

*on edit:  I got the website wrong.  It is actually www.tunestub.com

Was hot for a while some 8-9 years ago, when he toured as an Orthodox-Jewish guy playing all-out reggae, an obvious combination (?). His debut EP (forgot the title) was REALLY good.

Then a few years ago, he dropped the Orthodox-Jewish appearance, also cut his hair, and became unrecognizable. Of course, by then, his (new) music wasn't any good anymore.

I saw him at Bogart's at some point in the early years.

DrJohn, what is the capacity of the reincarnated Ludlow Garage?

DrJohn, what is the capacity of the reincarnated Ludlow Garage?

The only thing I've seen re:  capacity was on an ad the ownership purportedly placed on another website advertising for a chef for the restaurant part of the place.  It said the downstairs concert portion of the place holds 300.  Don't know whether I would take that as gospel, though.

Update:  The venue for this gig has been changed to The Thompson House.  Same date, in the Parlour (Fidlar is in the main room).     I guess the new Ludlow Garage won't be ready by 9/18.  They had to postpone another show that was set for last night.  I have a possible conflict but I will still make the show if
I can.  Just wish it was at a different place...

In all fairness, the top prices for most of the shows they have scheduled are for the first one to three rows.  But even taking that into consideration, the prices seem inordinately high.

For folkie fans, Livingston Taylor will be there on 10/31.  Tom Rush is booked for May 2016.  I might go to that one if the place is still open then--somehow I have my doubts.

March 5, 2016 - Rickie Lee Jones

OK, I'm not exactly a huge fan but I did like her first album back in the day. And the venue is slowly adding more shows for the coming months.  I still question the long term viability of a space with such a small capacity/number of seats, and I doubt many full rock bands will ever play there.   But they certainly have more upcoming concerts than the Thompson House, though that seems like faint praise.

I saw Grant Lee Buffalo a number of times back in the day, including when they opened for REM at Riverfront Coliseum on the "Monster" tour back in 1995. What a fantastic evening of music that was.

What is the exact date of the GLB show at Ludlow's?

Saturday, February 13, 2016, a week from today.  Can't say for certain if I'll make it but would like to.  I've checked out Steve Poltz and he's no slouch, either.  I especially like his funny songs like "Fistfight At The Vegan Lunch".

Finally have a reason to go to Live at Ludlow Garage and of course it is a "Remember that One Song From The 90s?" artist.

7-13 Macy Gray (It will make the wife happy)

I just noticed that Lisa Loeb is coming on November 4th. She's one of those artists I never got a chance to see back in the 90s so I may have to shell out the bucks to see her.

Hah. I'd be strangely interested to see her, too, but how much of her work do you actually know? I just know that one song, I think.

Although, to be fair, she does look pretty much the same, so it might feel like the 1990s still.

She has aged very well.

I'm pretty familiar with her. I didn't get hugely into her when she was big, but probably 5 or 6 years ago I gave her another try and really liked what I heard. And she definitely has a picture of her in the basement aging away.

So this is where I'd tell you all about the Macy Gray show last night and the Live at Ludlow Garage experience . . . but I can't. The show was cancelled due to "unforeseen scheduling conflict" which basically translates to "we didn't sell enough tickets to make it worth while". I hate when they do that.

I hope she didn't cancel the Cincy and Pittsburgh gigs because she thinks those "markets are too small" or don't get enough media coverage.  But I have a suspicion that might be at least one of the reasons.

The new ticket company that's replacing Stubhub for events at Live At The Ludlow Garage appears to be Eventbrite.

I don't know much about this vendor.  Anyone have any experience with them?

I have yet to do any kind of mobile device ticket, because I keep all my stubs/tix, so you're not the only old-school person around here :-)  For the fundraiser, I've never had any kind of ticket...we get checked in and handed a packet of stuff.  If I am remembering correctly, I did attend an event at XU and for that I think Eventbrite sent me an email and then I printed it out.

I just checked on ticket prices for that show: $35-$75. Are you kidding me? Count me out!

Also notice that Carl Palmer, best known as the drummer of Emerson Lake & Palmer, is doing a show on Wednesday Nov. 16. Ticket prices are a shade more reasonable: $25-65. I wonder what that show will be like: Palmer telling stories and then playing some songs? (That is what Rick Wakeman did a few years back at the 20th Century Theater, a bloody brilliant and hugely entertaining solo performance of stories and music that was.)

Have you been looking for an excuse to see / hear Ludlow Garage, but don't want to pay way too much money to see that band with the one song from the 90s?

Free show tonight with Half The Animal (young pop band like Walk The Moon or Imagine Dragons). They only have 4 released songs, so you won't be out all night.

7:00 doors 8:00 show (subject to capacity)

Saturday June 10, 2017:  Air Traffic Controller.

Tickets are $10-$12, a refreshing change from this venue's "you'll need to take out a second mortgage to see a gig here" pricing.  I don't know this act's music (the LALG website calls them "indie pop") but I'll check it out and maybe go if they're good enough.

You've heard wrong.  The setup is odd but far from horrible.  There are very few bad seats in the house.  The prices do tend to be on the high side, though the tickets for Red Wanting Blue and The Verve Pipe are more Reasonable.  It would behoove the ownership to have more reasonably priced shows.

Well, since this thread started 2 1/2 years ago with complaints about ticket prices, and predictions that it would have trouble staying open, and yet there are still posts about concerts being held there, I'd say that management sees no reason to lower ticket prices anytime soon.

there have been some shows there that I was mildly interested in, but, like others have said, the ticket prices were way overpriced. Hence I've still not gone to any show there
Title: Re: Coming to Ludlow Garage (not a time warp)

A lot of the acts that have played the place tend to be ones where older, richer baby boomers or Gen X'ers or whatever will shell out the extra cash.  But one of the first acts they booked was Freedy Johnston, and the tickets were reasonably priced.  Since the place wasn't ready for opening, Freedy's show had to be moved.  More acts like Freedy, or Red Wanting Blue and The Verve Pipe, would be a step in the right direction.

One reason--but certainly not the only one--tickets are more expensive is the limited number of seats in the place--the two sections of seats are separated by the kitchen for the upstairs restaurant. But it's an intimate venue, so even the seats in back are pretty good.  And lots of times the seats in the back rows are cheaper.

I was looking to possibly buy tickets for an upcoming show.  The venue's website is all messed up--for upcoming shows, it lists only past ones.  And their facebook page has been taken down.  I initially thought "that's it, the place is either closing or already closed".  But...a bit of looking around online revealed that the place has once again changed ticket vendors.  They're going with the Darth Vader of ticket companies, Ticketbastard.

Though it's still strange that they wouldn't announce in advance an upcoming change in the ticket seller.  I sent an email a couple of days ago detailing the problems with the website and FB page being offline and got no response, leading me to do my own online detective work.  What great customer service.

Black Uhuru on Sept. 14!!!!

I love those guys. I saw them at the peak of their talents when they played at Bogart's in 1990, with Sly and Robbie in the line-up. What a show!!!! Saw them again in 2000 in Boston while I was out there on a business trip. Yes, still with Sly and Robbie.

I wonder if this line-up will have Sly and Robbie?

As a compete aside to the 1990 show... that very day I had bought a new car (Nissan Maxima). I was still married then. My then-wife and I went to the show, and we got wasted and had a great time. On the way back home after the show, we got so horny, we pulled over and fucked right then and there. Now that's how you "christen" a new car!

*UPDATE* tix for that show are a very reasonable $20-$37.50. Wow. I don't think that Sly and Robbie will be part of the band, but I may attend regardless

You don’t think Black Uhuru’s peak have been 7-10 years before 1990?

I bought a new car in 1990.  I don’t recall having sex in it, but I was a sophomore in college with a girlfriend so I’m sure there was at least some foreplay and maybe some early stage hand job action that summer.  Quite possibly with Black Uluru playing and/or on the way back from a show.

My dad bought a new car in ‘79.  I never had sex in it, thankfully because that would have been bad.

I agree it was: 1982's Chill Out, and even better, 1984's Anthem albums were their studio peak moments.

But seeing them in concert in 1990 with Sly and Robbie was unforgettable!

I “roadied” for The Clash once. At a matinee gig, Joe asked me if I wouldn’t mind moving a small speaker stack from one side of the stage to behind where he had his mic. I did. He thanked me. I saw the show later that afternoon and the ‘adult’ version of it in the evening.

By that reckoning, and based on who Black Uhuru consist of now, I’m thinking I could quite possibly single-handedly tour as “The Clash”

Seeing Culture with one genuine member was bad enough. An ex-drummer touring as “Faust” was sacreligious. “Black Uhuru” is nothing like band you’re paying to see. There’s too much of this shit going at the moment. I blame “The Who”

The newish ownership has long range plans to get rid of the airplane-like seats and eliminate or relocate the kitchen between the two seat sections. We'll see if they really get around to it.

The most unusual/weirdest venue I ever saw a show at was "The Great Auditorium" in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. It was built around the time of the Civil War.  A large part of it is constructed with wood and it looks like it would catch on fire if you stared at it too intensely
but it's survived all these years.  It's owned by a religious sect called "The Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association" but they rent it out for secular concerts, one of which I saw.  Members of the sect are referred to locally as "The Tent People".  Members of the sect literally pitch tents and camp out very close to the venue during the warmer months.  I was there during the summer and the tents are huge--some of them look like not-so-miniature row houses. Quite a bizarre experience.

Most unusual/weirdest venue people have ever been to--maybe that would be a good thread...

This venue will close for renovations after the Al Stewart show on June 1, and reopen with Pat Travers in early September.

The only thing certain is that the airplane-like seats will be removed. Supposedly a bar will be added downstairs. The newish ownership previously talked about creating more space by eliminating the kitchen that separates the two sections. If they intend to keep the restaurant, they will need to put the kitchen elsewhere. I don't know where that would be. It will be interesting to see the finished product this fall.

I have never seen a show there. But I walk by it quite often when I go to see a movie at the Esquire (which I do a lot). It seemed to me the restaurant is doing quite well, lots of people much of the time I walk by.

Yes, the restaurant seems to do well, at least on nights they have a concert.  I wasn't impressed with it under the prior ownership--the food was OK but the service was abysmal.  I'll try it again under the newish ownership.
