Fair enough, TayFo, but anyone who would complain about listing the shows in the old thread must be very bored, or have a lot of spare time on their hands.

Most on here won't care but this Saturday, August 1, Lilly Hiatt (John's daughter) and Aarron Lee Tasjan will be appearing in the Revival Room.  I might just go, but it would be for Aaron Lee, not Lilly--what I've heard from Lilly so far makes me believe no one would be paying attention if her last name was Smith.  Tasjan writes some good tunes, and when it comes to songwriters from the Columbus area, I'll take him over Tim Easton (sorry, mik).

I can't make it on Saturday due to a prior commitment but I would be interested in seeing Lily Hiatt - I like the few songs I've heard from her. I'll have to look into this Tasjan character to see if he truly is better than Easton - that's a tall task!!

Old timey music akin to Squirrel Nut Zippers and endorsed by Jack White. They played MPMF, but I didn't see them. This is not normally my speed, but there's a good chance I'll check them out in the big room.

Pokey and crew have certainly worked their way up. I remember them being booked for free shows in the lounge at the old Southgate House location.  I might make this one as well since (1) it's a show I can take Mrs. Drjohnrock to--no screamingly loud guitars to scare her off, and (2) relatives I occasionally see shows with are interested in attending.

She's 78 years young as of October 10 of this year.  The last time I saw her in December 2012 at the Taft ballroom.  Her amazing voice had lost none of its power, and I've heard no reports to the contrary since then.  She can mop the floor with most female rockers less than half her age.  I'm just glad she still seems to be in good health and touring.

Wanda had to cancel her SGHR show--as well as most of her other spring tour dates--due to surgery  :(  However, the SGHR website has a nice message from Wanda to her fans explaining why she had to cancel the dates.  The lady is all class.  Hopefully the show will get rescheduled later this year.

On a more positive note, the "NRBQ v. Los Straitjackets" tour is coming to the SGHR on Friday September 16.  That should be a very entertaining show.

Scott Miller (duo),  Friday July 29, 2016.  This is the same night as the free Reverend Horton Heat show on Fountain Square.  But if it's raining that evening, Mr. Miller is my backup plan.  He put on a great show at the Taft ballroom with the duo configuration a couple of years ago.

December 15, 2016--Reverend Horton Heat (with Nashville Pussy, Unknown Hinson, and I forget the other act)

Counting the free show on Fountain Square on July 29, this will be the third time the Good Rev has played in the area this year.  I think he might like Cincinnati, whaddya think?

Definite signs of life:

Friday 8/12/2016--Gang Green
Sunday 9/25/2016--Webb Wilder
Thursday 9/27/2016--The Vibrators
Friday 10/7/2016--Southern Culture On The Skids
Thursday 10/20/2016--Beach Slang and Bleached

Of course, these are in addition to Los Straitjackets and NRBQ on Friday 9/16/2016 and Reverend Horton Heat/Nashville Pussy/Unknown Hinson/Lucky Tubb on Thursday 12/15/2016.

This seems like another leg of the show they did in February at Bogart's. To Unknown Hinson fans: The Rev and his crew played a few Unknown Hinson songs with Hinson on stage. But I do love me some Heat, so I'll be there.

 . . . and SCOTS
 . . . and Beach Slang

Scott Miller it is--got my tickets yesterday.  I'd love to see the Rev for free but (1) I don't like him enough to stand in the rain, and (2) Mrs. Drjohnrock expressed an interest in see Scott Miller, so she's going with me.  Besides, the good Rev is coming back in December, so I might be able to see him then.

In the unlikely event anyone is going to see Scott instead of RHH, be sure to say hi.

Nobody's been able to predict the rain well with all these spoty showers. It's going to rain, but they don't know when and where. Even my best weather app can't predict much outside of an hour. If it ends up being a long steady rain, I'll end up going to The Woodward for Multimagic and Dawg Yawp.

Saturday 10/8 - The [non-Afghan] Whigs
Sunday 11/20 - The Dickies/The Queers
Saturday 11/26 - The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band

The Dickies/Queers double bill is on a Sunday but close enough to Thanksgiving that I may be able to attend.

It's interesting to see that Rev. Peyton and crew have moved their annual Thanksgiving weekend show from the Taft ballroom to SGHR.

Trixi and I went to Noir at SGH's Revival Room last night. It was a fun night of dancing to 80s/goth/industrial/cyberpunk with tag-team DJs, lots of pulsating laser lights and excellent goth fashion people-watching. I stayed out way past my bedtime ... and will probably do it again next month.

Surprisingly we were NOT the oldest people there - possibly the oldest people actually dancing, but not the oldest in the room. Which was nice.

Friday 10/7/2016--Southern Culture On The Skids

The Split Squad has been added to the bill.  To those not familiar, The Split Squad is composed of the following people who are or were in the bands after their names:

Clem Burke-Blondie
Keith Streng-The Fleshtones
Eddie Munoz-Plimsouls
Michael Giblin-Parallax Project
John Kantor-The Baseball Project, Jim's Big Ego

Hopefully I can make it to this show.

Totally unrelated, Leggy played at the SGH Revival this past weekend for some benefit show. I hadn't been to that venue in a long time, and had forgotten what a beautiful venue that really is.

(Reason that I haven't been there in such a long time--I'd have to look it up how long really, is that most bands that are playing there these days are completely foreign to me, which doesn't speak well of me as a music lover, I realize that. Back in the old days of the original SGH, I went there all the time, as they were booking acts that were relevant to me.)

You and Trixi may already know this, MissKitty, but in case you or other persons thinking of going aren't aware, guitarist Ruben Gallego has left Beach Slang in the wake of allegations that have recently surfaced that he committed sexual assault four years ago.  The details are on the band's Facebook page.  So for the rest of this tour, it will be James Alex solo, playing electric guitar.  He says that refunds will be available for those who want to see a full band show.

Kudos to SGHR for letting advance online ticket purchasers know it won't be a full band show.

As for electric vs. acoustic, at first the band's Facebook page said the tour would be a "Quiet Beach" acoustic one.  Then James Alex said one of the upcoming shows would be him, an electric guitar and an amplifier.  So it could go either--or both--ways.

I haven't actually purchased a ticket yet but I am on their email blast list and noticed that they had changed it to list the show as 'acoustic.' Either way it was good of them to be proactive about it.

The Big Crunch from the woxy boards posted the following on Facebook about the Beach Slang situation:

"Having seen this show on Tuesday night, I'd urge everyone to go who has the opportunity. Yes, Beach Slang has now been reduced down to James Alex and his screaming loud electric guitar and yet, it's amazing to see the guy go ahead with the tour after basically losing his whole band before the tour was set to start. On Tuesday he basically played every song they had and then the covers....Husker Du, Jawbreaker, The Smiths, multiple Pixies tunes, a couple of 'Mats tunes, the Cure, Springsteen, The Lemonheads, Tommy Keene... Say what you want about him, but if nothing else, he's got impeccable taste in music and and is about as passionate a performer as I've ever seen."

Doesn't sound as if it's an acoustic show!

And looking ahead to 2017:

Wrong.  It's not a thing, he just does solo shows sometimes if someone asks, or if the rest of the band isn't available.  Sometimes he and Lisa do shows, just the two of them, under the name Appalachian Cancer, also.

To make the evening even better, William Matheny will be headlining in the lounge.  William and most of his band also play in The Paranoid Style.  William's own songs are country-rock, in a good way.  And while I wish the country would wither away in favor of the rock, he is a first rate songwriter--no bro country bullshit.  What an evening--Jonathan upstairs, then William downstairs.  I'm really looking forward to it.

I would like to go if they aren't in their occasional country mode, which I don't think they are but will double check tour reports closer to the date.  I haven't seen them since before they gave one of the guitar players the boot, so it would be interesting to see how they are as a trio.

6/13/2018 - Reverend Horton Heat/Big Sandy
6/21/2018 - The Blasters/Clownvis Presley
7/2/2018 - The Dead Boys

Tav Falco is on a Tuesday night, which will make it difficult for me to attend. Still, I'm going to try to be there because who knows how long he'll continue touring.  He's not a young man and has other sources of income.

There are a number of other interesting shows coming to SGHR that don't fit into the indie rock/alternapop pigeonhole.  The only one I'll mention here is Sierra Hull.  I have my ticket and am really looking forward to the show.

I'm intrigued by 3TEETH / Ho99o9: Lights Out America on April 18.

Twentyshots put a couple Ho99o9 songs on one of the WOXY Users Spotify playlists a few months back and I was diggin'. Then on his recommendation I had a look at some clips from their live shows and whoa.

Ross Raleigh, founder/owner of the Southgate House and Southgate House Revival, has passed away:

While I'm sure Morella will continue to do a great job with the SGHR, it's sad to lose such a major figure in the local music scene.  I found out about the celebration of his life at SGHR too late for me to attend.  Other than exchanging pleasantries a time or two, I never really talked to him.  I know mik had a long talk with him awhile back.  Maybe sometime in the future he can share some of what they discussed.

Heads up Television fans. Richard Lloyd is coming to SGH next month.

I'm waffling on whether or not to go because the venue says the show starts at midnight and I'm not down with that. Kinda hoping they update the site to say the show starts at a normal time but right now it says doors open at 11 p.m. and the show starts at 11:55 p.m.

Found out he's doing a book signing at Barnes & Noble at the Levee the same day, so I might go to that instead.

midnight.

i don't get that. this isn't studio 54 and we are all coked out of our minds......and i'm not trying to sound like a fuddy duddy (although saying "fuddy duddy", makes you one) but no one wants that, midnight.

even if i pretend i'm 21 again and someone tells me jane's addiction or cop shoot cop or......it doesn't even matter who it is.......is coming on at midnight, i'd be like, WHY? who fucked that scheduling up? 11 is bad enough.

I 'm going to try to make it to the show.  The midnight start isn't optimal but as long as he doesn't have one (or more) opening acts...

Yeah, I'd REALLY like to see him. Never got a chance to see Television BITD and surely he'll play at least a few Television songs.

I saw an amazing show by Tom Verlaine years ago at The Wexner but he was playing an original score for a Man Ray film and there was no Television played (at least that I can recall).

That said, I ain't 24 any more and a midnight start time is not optimal.

So I got some more insight as to why the Richard Lloyd show starts at midnight. Apparently his book deals with his opioid addiction (which basically ruined his career back in the 70s/80s) and how he got sober. He will be the keynote speaker at the annual meeting of The Ohio Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, which is the same night as the SGH show. So he's doing the keynote thing and then coming straight from it to the gig, hence the super late start time.

The book signing is the following day (Sat. Aug. 18) at Barnes & Noble at the Levee, not the same day as I had originally thought.

Lloyd is going to do a show in Indy on Saturday 8/18, with a normal start time.  Depending on my schedule, I might go to that one instead of SGHR.  Since I live on the west side, it's easier for me to get to Indy than it is to get to Columbus or Louisville.  I could be back home from Indy possibly before midnight, which is his SGHR start time.
