Title: 25 Concerts for 2017
Post by: Drjohnrock on January 16, 2017, 10:24:21 PM
Let's get it rolling.

1.   1/15/2017--Muuy Biien/Leggy--MOTR Pub, Cincinnati, Ohio

Leggy sounded fine as usual.  They debuted some new songs.  Proud papa euro60 was in attendance.

Muuy Biien were all right.  I've heard them described as being like Gang Of Four, but their music isn't nearly as minimalist.  If a reference point is really necessary, they could be considered a more "accessible" Wire.  The assertive bass playing and some funk touches were somewhat reminiscent of Bedlam Retreat, a Cincinnati band from back in the day.  Anyone remember them?  MB seem to have lost one of their two guitar players a few months back.  I think the second guitar is definitely missed.  They played for 35 minutes but it's hard to complain when there's no cover charge.

The opener, Will something, went on at 6:45, Arkells at 7:20, Murder By Death about 8ish.
You can generally guess bands will start an hour after doors, but with so many bands just count backwards from 11. (11, 9, 8, 7)

1.   1/15/2017--Muuy Biien/Leggy--MOTR Pub, Cincinnati, Ohio

2.  2/26/2017--Jason Ringenberg--Southgate House Revival (Revival Room), Newport, Kentucky

Just because a musician who gained notice with an electric band later tours solo with an acoustic guitar doesn't mean it's sensitive singer-songwriter night.  A lot of the set was like Jason and the Scorchers with a lower decibel level--I've never seen someone dance around so much while playing guitar.  And most of the songs he played were requests after the third song. Jason asked if there were any requests, and after ignoring the first couple of songs people shouted for, it went like this:

Me:  Link Wray!

JR:  What's that?  You wanna hear Link Wray?

Me:  Yeah!

JR:  OK

And after reminiscing about his friendship with the late Mr. Wray and telling a good story about him, he played the tune. All in all, a fine show, and the 7:00 PM start meant I could attend on a Sunday night and get home before 9:30.  And special thanks to the doorman/bouncer for escorting an obnoxious drunk out the door.

1.   1/15/2017--Muuy Biien/Leggy--MOTR Pub, Cincinnati, Oh
2.  2/26/2017--Jason Ringenberg--Southgate House Revival (Revival Room), Newport, Kentucky

3.  3/24/2017--Chuck Prophet & The Mission Express/Chuck Cleaver--Southgate House Revival, Newport, Kentucky

What a great night of music.  After Wussy's Chuck Cleaver banged out a fine opening set accompanied by just his electric guitar, Mr. Prophet and company brought forth a rock and roll tour de force which lasted almost two hours.  The big Friday night crowd loved it.  If Prophet keeps this up, he'll soon need a larger venue than the SGHR. Check out his new album, Bobby Fuller Died For Your Sins, and definitely see him live if you get the chance.

3.  3/24/2017--Chuck Prophet & The Mission Express/Chuck Cleaver--Southgate House Revival, Newport, Kentucky

4.  4/13/2017--Jonathan Richman--Southgate House Revival (Revival Room), Newport, Kentucky
5.  4/13/2017--William Matheny & Strange Constellations--Southgate House Revival (Lounge), Newport, Kentucky

Random points about Richman's show:

(1) As usual, no opening act.  Must be a standard part of his contract.

(2) When Jonathan says in interviews that he and longtime drummer Tommy Larkins play a lot differently than they did a few years ago, he means it.  Jojo has incorporated a lot more flamenco and similar styles into his guitar playing, but it's an expansion of his sound, not a wholesale change.  And Larkins is an incredibly underrated drummer.  He has added timbales to his kit, and if you closed your eyes you would think there's an extra percussionist on stage.

(3)  Richman spoke to the audience even more than in the past.  His dry sense of humor was very much in evidence but he subtlely and not-so-subtlely gave the crowd things to think about as well.

(4)  My favorite part of the show:  Audience members who shushed idiots who were talking during the closing number, As My Mother Lay Dying.  If there's one rule at Jonathan's shows, it's that you are respectfully silent if he chooses to play that song.

(5)  The Revival Room was very crowded. Hey Morella, can Jonathan go back to the Sanctuary the next time he comes to town?

William Matheny and band were in fine form, and rocked out more than I anticipated.  This relatively young man already has few peers as a songwriter. He plays locally and towns close by quite often, so see him when you get the chance--years later, you can tell people you saw him when he used to play very small venues.

Note to euro60:  Ken from Trash Flow Radio was there for both Richman and Matheny.

I'm rather sure that board members in addition to TayFo and me have seen shows in 2017.  Let's see more lists!

Drjohn, knowing that Ken is a big Richman fan, I am not at all surprised he was there.

I haven't been to a lot of shows this year, in fact only 1 non-Leggy show, and that was Margaret Glasky and Andrew Bird at the US Bank Arena a few months ago.

There is an embarrassment of riches of all kinds of gigs all over town tonight (Kishi Bashi; Son Volt; Electric Citizen; Joesph; Leggy of course; just to name those).

Thanks for the post, notoriouspbake.  It's good to hear about gigs that aren't in the Cincinnati area.

I've heard a lot of good things about The Ark--would like to catch a show there sometime.  I know mik has also been there and has said positive things about the place

Assuming the set list on setlist.fm is accurate, it looks that this was a great concert, with songs they don't always play:  Generals, Ignite, Disco Man, Nasty, Stranger On The Town.  Makes me wish I would have planned things better and caught the tour in Indy.  Did you enjoy the show, TayFo?

TayFo, how well attended was it?

the damned show was really good. they sounded great, were very entertaining and dressed like 5 guys from 5 different bands.
i didn't know bogarts was capable of selling a $33 ticket but this was worth it. also maybe i haven't seen a bigger act there lately.

speaking of, any extra pixies tickets floating around?
granted, i'm not super into their last 2 albums, and didn't try to hard to reserve a ticket, but it'd be wrong of me to not ask....

Back from the Nelsonville Music Festival, where my daughter's band Leggy played on Friday afternoon. My first time there, and I must say, I was utterly charmed and impressed with the whole setup. This felt like Bonnaroo but on a much smaller scale. I hadn't been to any out-of-town music festivals since 2011 Lollapalooza because, frankly I have tired of the whole thing. I attended all of the first 5 editions of Bunbury here in town but not this year. I'm just done with "big" music festivals (unless Leggy is playing of course).

I only attended Nelsonfest on Friday (when Leggy was on the bill), but if I had known what to expect, I'd likely attended the whole weekend. Even on that one day, I saw so many great acts. And the whole vibe is just.... great! Not to mention that Nelsonville, an hour southeast of Columbus (2 1/2 drive from Cincy), is just gorgeous.

Great experience all around.

Bumped into Pourmesometea at the Leggy set. She was there for the entire fest, and I'm sure she'll have some thoughts to add.

6.  6/8/2017--The Joy Formidable/Cusses--Woodward Theater, Cincinnati, Ohio

Cusses are from Savannah, Georgia, which proves that the town has other things besides historic buildings.  One guy on guitar, another guy on drums, and a gal singer who was wearing an outfit that I guess was supposed to look sexy but instead made her look like a tall purse.  She drank a ton of bottled water--I hope she doesn't have diabetes and doesn't know it yet. Overall they were slightly better than average noisemakers.

This was my first time seeing the headliners.  It was a good experience.  Their music had a lot of variety and while I would have been happy with fewer effects on the guitar, it was an enjoyable show.  They talked about taking the rest of the year off the road (we'll see if that really happens_) to work on their upcoming album and coming back to the US early next year. It sounds good to me.

The balcony was closed off for the show. There were maybe 125 people in the audience.  I guess everyone else went to see Warpaint.  Maybe they'll get a bigger crowd next time around.

seen them thrice now....each show has been a little different energy-wise.....the first time (mpmf) a few years ago, they ripped my face off. it was pretty great.
then, in 2016 on fountain square, they were good but plagued by sound issues that stopped the show a few times....that hurt any momentum going.....
last night was good but lower energy for them....and reflected by the crowd. they can also be a little gabby sometimes, which is fine, it's all good natured and kind of goofy, but definitely affects momentum too.....i don't recall so much chatter the first time i saw them.....

one common element however has been a kick ass 7 minute version of whirring that knocks the house down.

I wouldn't have gone but for my buddy really really wanting to go, but I did end up going to see U2 last night at Papa John's Stadium in Louisville on the "Joshua Tree 2017" tour, where they play the entire album in the exact same sequence.

I'm a fan of U2 (is there anyone who isn't?), but I wouldn't call myself a die-hard or uber-fan like my friend.

That said, it was an incredibly enjoyable show. The band was in fine form, and the production was top-notch, and then some.

Highly recommended, even for the mere casual U2 fan. (U2 will be playing Indy in September.)

Delightful show at Washington Park today.

The weather was absolutely perfect.

I was surprised that, as nicely as attended it was, there weren't more people there.

I kept hoping for OtR to play their new song "Welcome Home" (the commercial for Cincinnati Bell during the Super Bowl). They did, as their 1st encore. It gave me goose bumps.

My roots grow by the river
They are deeper than the sea
My people and this city
They hold and anchor me

While we sing "Hello, Ohio"
Meet me there and you will see
When I call Cincinnati
"Welcome home," she answers me

1.   1/15/2017--Muuy Biien/Leggy--MOTR Pub, Cincinnati, Ohio
2.  2/26/2017--Jason Ringenberg--Southgate House Revival (Revival Room), Newport, Kentucky
3.  3/24/2017--Chuck Prophet & The Mission Express/Chuck Cleaver--Southgate House Revival, Newport, Kentucky

5.  4/13/2017--William Matheny & Strange Constellations--Southgate House Revival (Lounge), Newport, Kentucky
6.  6/8/2017--The Joy Formidable/Cusses--Woodward Theater, Cincinnati, Ohio

7.  8/21/2017--Chastity Belt/Joseph--Roebling Point Entertainment District, Covington, Kentucly

The "Roebling Point Entertainment District" consists of Court Street in Covington, blocked off between 3rd and Park--talk about hype.  This summer, this new "venue" is presenting "River City Jam", a weekly series of concerts featuring local opening acts and national headliners, free to attendees. The somewhat sparse attendance shows they have a way to go in order to compete with the similar summer concerts across the river on Fountain Square.

In any event, it was a great evening for an outdoor show.  Not hot, little humidity.  Cincinnati's Joseph has a lead singer who sounds like Marty Balin on helium, and their most memorable tune (at least that I heard--I showed up after they started) featured a riff stolen from Link Wray's Rumble.  Whatever.

The promoter REALLY wanted Chastity Belt--they did a show last night in Portland (Oregon, not Maine), and were up all night catching planes to get to this gig.  They sounded good. My only wish is that they would play some more fast tunes in addition to their admittedly beguiling mid-tempo numbers.  Hopefully they'll came back to our area and play a gig as part of a tour that doesn't require a frantic cross country trip.

8.   9/2/2017--Song Of The Mountains TV taping:  Jim Lauderdale/Sherman Holmes/Judy Marshall/Webb Wilder--Lincoln Theatre, Marion, Virginia

I'm not an architecture buff but The Marion Theatre is an absolutely beautiful venue--one of only three Art Deco Mayan Revival theaters in the world.  The murals are amazing, and the carvings and painting have incredible detail.  Very good sound quality as well--just a great place to see a show.

Webb Wilder was originally set to close the show.  I guess they are trying to expand beyond their "bluegrass and old timey" fan base.  Since the advance ticket sales didn't exactly set records, Webb was demoted to opener, while the artistically inferior Jim Lauderdale closed the show.  Jim didn't help put that many more asses in the seats.

Webb's set was by far the highlight of the evening, as much for his integrity as  the fine music: despite playing without his band and with just an acoustic guitar, he did not pander to country music enthusiasts in the crowd.  The tunes he played have long been part of his repertoire, while his stage patter included tales of the rock bands he and his friends would travel to see when he was younger.  And he recited The Webb Wilder Credo:  Work hard, rock hard, eat hard, sleep hard, grow big, wear glasses if you need 'em.

As for the rest:  Sherman Holmes (good; fine singer), Judy Marshall (all right), and Jim Lauderdale (retire now while you're not that far behind).

Last week I saw Interpol while on vacation in Belgium, on their "Turn on the Bright Lights 15th Anniversary" tour in Tilburg, NL (about 50 mi. north of Antwerp), what a fantastic evening of music that was. They started the show playing TOTBL front to back, and in the encore played a mixed "greatest hits", just fabulous. Interpol hasn't been relevant since 2007 or so (in my book anyway), but this show was lights out, period.

Are they doing that in the states?  I saw them at the old Southgate House on the original TOTBL tour and it was a great show.

No idea if they are doing a similar TOTBL anniversary tour in the US.

And yes, I was at that SGH show as well (Jan. 17, 2003)

Saw my first concert for 2017 on Saturday:

1. Afghan Whigs / Har Mar Superstar @ Brooklyn Steel 9/16/2017

[old man alert]
I thought it was rather unpleasant. I struggled the whole time with the sound and the only enjoyable moments were in a few of the songs when it went really soft and (I think) there were no guitars playing. The bass was going, and maybe the keys, but that was probably it. Otherwise I could barely hear the lyrics, the notes, or anything else. Is this a case of the band being poor, the venue being poor, or me being cranky? I couldn't tell. I think that I used to just accept this fact of live music, and especially live rock bands, but I don't know. It's been 1.5 years since I saw a show, and it was Public Service Broadcasting so it was definitely in a different spectrum of music.

That being said, Greg Dulli was cool and they looked stylish. I'm sure they played well but I couldn't tell.

Har Mar Superstar opened and he was a genuine asshole. His music was pretty good, but everything else about him had disaster written all over it. He claimed he was drunk because he went to a 7 year old's birthday party earlier in the day. He tried doing patter between songs but he, literally and legitimately, couldn't complete his own sentences. Later, Greg Dulli finished a song and said that usually Har Mar sings that song and he almost forgot that he wasn't there because he's, "probably doing acid somewhere in Brooklyn. That's not a joke." So yeah - weird situation with that guy, but I guess the Rock N Roll lifestyle never changes even if you're in your mid-40s, fat, and balding. Also, he was wearing some weird tights and my friend instantly commented, "he dresses like my 3 year old daughter."

I have to back up everything you have to say about Har Mar.  I really like his music, but he just seems like a complete asshole. I saw him at MOTR and he apparently left his dirty hoodie on the stage all night and someone stole it. Now, that definitely shouldn't have happened, but he just kept harping on someone stealing his "drug rug". He even stopped the show and walked out at one point saying he wouldn't come back until someone returned it. Apparently someone talked him off the ledge, as he came back and finished the show after like 15 minutes, but a good portion of the crowd had already left. Maybe he is different offstage (as Barb Abney really seems to like him) but everything I have ever seen him do on stage just leaves a terrible taste in my mouth.

I'm not fond of most festivals. But this yearly fest is very well organized and has a beautiful location on the banks of the Ohio River.  There are four stages, all close together, but no acts play at the same time--in theory, you could see all of them.

My pick of the festival:  Tyvek.  Close call between this and the set by Australia's feedtime.  But this Detroit band has songcraft to go along with the rock power, and showed a lot of adaptability by playing as a trio after the very recent departure of a fourth band member.

Excellent:  feedtime

Very Good:  Rays

Good:  Bonnie Prince Billy & the Bonafide United Musicians; Peter Brotzmann; Shit & Shine (but it's one and done--don't need to see this act again); Tyler Damon & Tashi Dorji; Frank Hurricane (comments about Shit & Shine apply here as well); Fried Egg; The Other Years; Deep State (if I had seen more of their set, I might have put them in the Very Good category)

OK:  Le fruit vert; Tara Jane O'Neil (except the last song with guest Thalia Zedek--that was good)

Disappointing:  David Nance

Bad:  Sarah Squirm; Matt Jencik

Didn't see:  Magik Markers; Attic Talent; Sadat X; Billington/Shippy/Wyche; Shutaro Noguchi

10.  10/20/2017-- Flamin' Groovies/Tiger Sex/NP Presley & The Ghost Of Jesse Garon--Southgate House Revival, Newport, Kentucky

This show was just what I needed after a taxing week at work.  The eight person opening band from Lexington (Kentucky, not Massachusetts), led by a guy whose mom was supposedly Elvis Presley's cousin, was a lot of fun.  They don't sound like Elvis and can't decide it they're roots rock, a soul revue, Van Morrison, gospel, or country, but they were likeable and energetic.  NP, dressed like a movie Mafioso, is a fine singer.  The two guitar players would probably be more at home in a heavy metal band but they were held in check for the most part.  I saw the baritone sax player in the lounge bar before the show.  The bartender told him that since he was with one of the bands, he was entitled to two free domestic beers (in other words, cheap swill) but would have to pay for the others.  He looked disgusted and shelled out the cash for a better brew.

Tiger Sex says they're from Las Vegas (uh, no).  If you're familiar with them you know the drill:  a guitarist, a drummer, and female singer Kelly (I thought they had a bass player--must have split).  Their punk sound mutated into hard rock/metal a bit too often but was never less than listenable.  But you can't talk about this band without mentioning the spectacle.  Kelly came on stage wearing a tuxedo, minus the tie and cumberbund and with the shirt open and proceed to shed most of that during the set while singing, shouting, screaming, gyrating, thrusting her crotch, etc.  I will say she had some unusual tattoos on her ass.

Based on some YouTube clips from the past few months, I had some trepidations about the headliner's lead singer, Chris Wilson.  He appeared to be struggling to both sing and play guitar, especially at the same time.  I was hoping he wasn't having health problems.  Those concerns were quickly alleviated.  He sang and played with a lot of energy.  This great rock 'n' roll outfit started with midtempo tunes before gradually revving it up.  A lot of the expected songs were played: Teenage Head, Slow Death, Jumpin' In The Night, a furious Shake Some Action, etc.  But the tunes from the surprisingly good new album, Fantastic Plastic, more than held their own, especially What The Hell's Goin' On, a fitting tune for 2017 and one that I predict will be a part of their sets for a long time to come. They don't play as long as they used to--with encore, the show lasted an hour and six minutes--but it was great to finally get a chance to see this band.  Hope they play again in our area.

The Groovies went on at 10:50 PM.  Must have been a hell of a late dinner!  Anyway, I saw a guy that looked like you and would have said hi, but on closer inspection, he looked liked he was confused about where he was.  You've been to so many gigs you wouldn't have that problem.  Anyway, I did have a good time despite a lot of weird (but mostly funny) stuff happening.  During the break between Tiger Sex and the headliner, I was chatting with an old friend from Ye Old Punk Rock Days when a gal I met at a show last year who also knows my friend came up and introduced herself.  After exchanging pleasantries,  I told her we met at the Olivia Jean show back in November.  She looked embarrassed when I told her that.  I think she might have been too drunk to remember much from the Olivia Jean show.  God, I hope she isn't a member on here...

13.  11/21/2017--Pere Ubu/Johnny Dowd--Woodward Theater, Cincinnati, Ohio

I don't think Webb Wilder is capable of putting on a bad show.  Despite his Mississippi birth and voice that shows it, this is no country performer.  Webb plays straight up rock and roll.  Hope he's able to carry on for many years to come.

The Warsaw Falcons haven't improved much since last I saw them eons ago when the gal I was with and I left before their set ended.  But we then met up with a couple of friends of mine and went to the Jockey Club.  My friends were impressed that the gal was from England.  Ended up being a great evening.  So that's one good memory that's loosely connected to the Warsaw Falcons.

I'm a huge fan of Johnny Dowd and hadn't seen him in well over a decade.  Johnny toned down the eccentric touches a bit (just a bit) and included a lot of great guitar work from both himself and Mike Edmondson.  He included a couple of tunes from his forthcoming album of songs that are all in the public domain, one of which was Tom Dooley, played in a way The Kingston Trio never imagined.  The crowd gave Johnny an enthusiastic reception for an opening act.  Hope McCabe brings him back to headline at MOTR.

Pere Ubu's music was as strange, offbeat and powerful as it ever was.  And while I try hard to judge the art, not the artist, vocalist Dave Thomas seemed to be competing with The Fall's Mark E. Smith for some kind of Frontman Who's The Biggest Jerk award.  His berating of audience members who did nothing but blab was justified, but doing the same to his band members over nothing was not.  It would be poetic justice if Johnny Dowd's music career took off to the point he could hire Thomas' band away from him.

Meant as an early Christmas present for my wife and kid but I went along as well.  Not my usual thing but they're good at what they do and don't take it too seriously. The best number of the evening was a medley of tunes from Disney movies that changed a lot of the words and basically trashed Disney.  Dig it!

Nice...

My concert going has fallen off in recent years. Middle age is catching up with me.

In the last year or so I've seen Thee Oh Sees, Cloud Cult, and Blind Pilot, the first two in particular being phenomenal shows for different reasons. Thee Oh Sees have really honed the high-energy show to a cathartic experience. Cloud Cult, for the first hour, played the soundtrack to a movie they made, the movie playing behind them. It was downright mystical, with barely a dry eye in the place.

Thanks for the report.  Glad you enjoyed it.  But why now start a new concert thread for 2018? I would do it but I have yet to see a show  :-[

I hope it works out! That was easily in my top 5 all-time favorite shows.
