Now that I have a CD player once again in my car, I'm currently listening to St. Vincent--Actor.  Up next, the Killers latest.

No, just keep em forever and make em collect the fee.  Stick it to the man!  And by the man, I mean anyone else who wanted to take out those CDs!

What did you think of the new OMD? I was a bit disappointed actually, as compared to the previous 2 albums in the OMD 2.0 era

I can't even begin to imagine what DM songs are like in a lullaby version, but good for you to indoctrinate your young kids to great music (if that is what you intend to do)  8)

There were a couple of songs that I liked, but the rest of the album is just OK...definitely is not a favorite of mine.  I'll give it a 2nd listen though...just in case a song grows on me.

LOLOLOL!  No young kids of my own :-)  When I was looking something up in the catalog to make sure a change was working, I came across this.  It's actually a whole series, so a few more will be showing up on this list.   This is DM songs played on what I am assuming is a xylophone...so no lyrics just tunes.  My friend said she used to play this all the time for her 2 daughters and that they know all the real songs anytime they happen to hear one.  I do think that I'll be making a CD for another friend who just had a baby of a mix from the ones I'll be listening to.

1. Shut Down the Streets - A.C. Newman - I've been on sort of a New Pornographers kick lately so decided to try some of his solo stuff that I hadn't heard, or hadn't heard in a while.  Nothing in this one really grabbed me.
2. The Slow Wonder - A.C. Newman - I'd heard this one before.  "On the Table" was the first song on my iPod for years and years, so its opening stanzas have an effect on me similar to "I Got You Babe" on Phil Conners.  It's still a good song, though.
3. Sorry is Gone - Jessica Lea Mayfield - Didn't know much about her except the single from this that WNKU was playing.  It's a grower, I've listened to it a few times through and I like it more each time.
4. Man About Town - Mayer Hawthorne - Quirky R&B.  Good stuff.
5. Wanted on Voyage - George Ezra - Nope.
6. In///Parrallel - Dhani Harrison - Huge nope.  If he was trying to avoid comparisons to his dad he's doing a good job.
7. S/T - Rainer Maria - Was surprised to really enjoy this.  I'm not a big fan of punky/fuzzy stuff.  I tend toward more produced than less.  Really good.
8. Baby Driver (Music From the Motion Picture) - Lots of good stuff here.
9 Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend - I'm really late to the boat on these guys.  I think I had associated them with Arcade Fire somehow.  I can't stand Arcade Fire, I think their trying-too-hard-to-be-weird-for-the-sake-of-being-weird schtick is awful.  VW is not that at all, I see now.  I've got a couple more of theirs queued up and I'm looking forward to them.  (I also have a couple of Arcade Fire discs in the wings, just to make sure I didn't jump to any conclusions with them.)

That Rainer Maria album is strange.

Caitlin DeMarrais pretty much went adult contemporary.  Kaia Fischer, who always struck me as the biggest meathead in Emo (which admittedly is like being the most liberal country singer) came out as transgender.

Then they dropped by far the heaviest album of their career.  It was okay.  The individual tracks were all generally quite good, but the album as a whole was too same-y.

It was kinda same-y, I'll agree with that.  I went into it expecting not to really like it, but did like the single, so I was pleased to not feel the need to shut it off.

Dhani Harrison on the other hand, I'd have turned it off after a couple of songs if I'd had access to my phone (I was in the shower while it was playing) .

I don't think you have a good eye for schtick.

Arcade Fire is very anthemic.  They walk a pretty tight line.  If they get it right it really gets you going, but miss by a fraction and it just kind of plods.

Reflekor aside, thereís always one or two songs on each album that really work, and the rest just sort of bore me.  I donít hate them, I just zone out.

I have not really listened to the new album except for a few cuts.  I found them to be mostly misses, except for Creature Comfort which sucks incredibly.  Iím guessing there is probably one awesome track on that album somewhere.  Only I will never hear it because after Creature Comfort Comfort I can never take them seriously ever again.

I like everything about New Pornographers except their music.  Itís not even that their music is bad, it just feels like it could be better.  If it was some band I never heard of, I would like them.  I blame Neko Case, because I feel the same about her solo records. This voice is incredible, the songs canít match it.

I like Jessica Lea Mayfield, I just donít love Jessica Lea Mayfield.  I want other people to love her though, because I like how her sound has been evolving and I feel like she is maturing.  I think sheís gonna put out a fantastic album one of these days if she keeps at it.

Anna Burch is similar.  I like her more because sheís got more pop, so it keeps it more fun and amiable even when she misses a bit.  That same sweet tooth probably limits her upside a bit compared to Mayfield though.

The new Lucy Dacus is amazing.  I did not think she had it in her.  Sheís got this weird thing where her songs do not feel fully assembled.  The lyrics are strange, the parts kinda donít go together. Sheís not the greatest singer.  Hard to put your finger on it.   But sheís always off-kilter the same way.  And the fact that it feels a little off makes you listen more closely whereas otherwise youíd dusmiss it.  And then it gives the hooks a chance to sink in and you stop worrying about it.

Which, to bring it back full circle, is how I felt about Rainer Maria.  DeMarrais has a shrill voice, Fischer just kinda screams and his guitar work is nothing special.  But somehow that dual punch managed to work.  When they got more polish on their later albums, they just got boring.

Bonus circle:  The kings of songs that donít make any sense was GBV.  They write tons of catchy hooks, but they were just like strung together kind of randomly.  A GBV song was like four half-finished good ideas mashed together. Except I hated that about them.  I actually really love the much-maligned Do the Collapse.  Sure Ric Ocasek overdid it with the keyboards a bit, but those songs are great.  Strong and melodic and the parts tie together.  Someone finally sat Pollard down and forced him to finish a song.  Isolation Drills is similar and also good but doesnít get shat on nearly as much.

you think creature comfort was bad, they've got a peter pan song.  i grew to like it.  creature comfort is terrible but we don't deserve love is incredible.  they also seem to always give the haitian chick a song which usually winds up saving the album

Well, admittedly I may have only heard stuff from Reflektor.  What I have heard was genuinely awful, IMHO, certainly nothing I'd call anthemic.  I'll try some other stuff and see what happens.

It's nice talking music again.  There hasn't been much of that around here for a while.

dude, suburbs won a grammy.  a fucking grammy.  they won the woxy boards album of the year numerous times.  all you've heard is maybe reflektor?  you know, you sound like my wife.  on what we refer to as our first date, i pick her up to go to a corn maze.  this was around the time the grammy winning album suburbs was winning grammys.  i said to her, you like the suburbs album?  what?  arcade fire.  they won a grammy.  what's on fire?   i knew right then i had a blank slate, a mind to program.  i already figured i was gonna marry her

So you're judging them from deep cuts off Reflektor?  Maybe a little harsh.  I'm with my man dd here, Suburbs is terrific.  Funeral was terrific.  This last album, Everything Now, is their worst hands down, except Electric Blue is the song that they let the woman sing that saves the album, as he put it.  Put Your Money on Me is also pretty good.

They are a little insufferable, yes.  I'll give you that much.

I always thought Arcade Fire's Funeral was the best album of the decade. At least, that's how I felt at the time.

I gave it a listen this weekend and still enjoyed it thoroughly but I found my mind drifting and not really in the mood. Maybe I've matured, or maybe it was just me at that time.

Suburbs was good but I liked the first album better. It definitely had a few great tracks on it, though.

Yeah, you can't take Funeral away from them.

I think that every album since then has gotten worse.  Partly I think it's because Funeral was our first exposure to them, so the other stuff doesn't sound as fresh.  And when they attempt to deviate from that sound they are less successful.  But also because Win Butler got up his own ass and became very preachy with the lyrics.  And the music as well.

Funeral wasn't exactly subtle but there was a bit of enigmatic melancholy to it.  Now everything is all aligned to drive home a point.  They're no longer angst-y, just angry.  Funeral was the anthem for lonely nerds in back of classrooms.  Everything Now is like the annoying overachiever kid who was always making a show of political causes.

Although really, that's kind of overstating things.  Nothing they have done since Funeral is bad by any stretch.  It's just not awesome and it takes more work to ferret out the good bits.  And like I said, Everything Now is probably okay, I just can't get over Creature Comfort.

For what its worth, Win Butler made a currency joke onstage circa 2008 when I saw them in NYC. So that's amazing.

You guys are taking this kinda hard.  We'll get through it together.

I don't give any band a whole lot of time to win me over, there's just too many fish in the sea.  So if I hear something and it sucks that's pretty much it for that band unless I'm given a reason to try again.  All I heard was whatever was popular from Reflektor and I thought it sucked.  I don't "get out much" in terms of discovering new music, I don't listen to radio.... hell, I didn't even listen to WOXY at the time,  it didn't come in anywhere that I was listening to the radio.  I did get pretty heavily dependent on WNKU, though if they ever played AF I didn't know it.  I don't stream really, though that is beginning to change.  I basically hear my music based on word of mouth and what little I hear of bands in pop culture.  Arcade Fire never made its way through except for Reflektor (maybe when they were SNL?  That's what stands out).  That's all.  If I should give other stuff a chance, I will.

Nice try Buttman, but I said nothing of the sort.

The point I was making, which you missed so completely, is that I'm just not an explorer when it comes to music.  I rely on others in large measure to point the way.  Most of the music I have discovered in the last probably ten years has been through you people, and often you specifically, so when we're not talking about music, like we are now, I lose ground.  WNKU helped with that, but they're gone now.

So yes, I think it's funny that you guys are losing your shit over my opinion of Arcade Fire, but also, it is a necessary feedback loop for me because I'd never have known to give them another shot otherwise.

Also, you can kiss it.

1. Shut Down the Streets - A.C. Newman
2. The Slow Wonder - A.C. Newman
3. Sorry is Gone - Jessica Lea Mayfield
4. Man About Town - Mayer Hawthorne
5. Wanted on Voyage - George Ezra
6. In///Parrallel - Dhani Harrison
7. S/T - Rainer Maria
8. Baby Driver (Music From the Motion Picture)
9 Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend

10. Hedwig and Angry Inch Original Cast Recording - I saw a production of this in Cincinnati years ago (I think Julie got the tickets from WOXY, in fact).  Really love the play and the music but had only ever heard the movie soundtrack and the cover album (Wig in a Box).  This is mostly pretty good.  I don't think I like the main character as much in this as other versions, however.

11. Yoko - Beulah - I've been cleaning up my music library lately because I switched to Android and am finally abandoning my old iPod classic, just can't deal with iTunes anymore, and don't want to carry two devices.  Anyhoo... I've been re-ripping stuff that I had in M4A format so that I don't eventually run into a wall with that format, and I had a song off of this album, but had never listened to it.  Cincinnati still had a copy so here we are.  That's a long story for an album that didn't do much for me.  It sounds like Beulah, which I liked, but nothing stands out as a keeper.  I'll probably delete it.

12. Invitation - Filthy Friends - Sounds pretty much like a female fronted REM.  Makes sense with Peter Buck in the mix.  It wasn't bad, but I didn't fall in love with it.  It seemed a tad over-produced and slick, even for me.

13. This Machine - The Dandy Warhols - I like "Bohemian Like You" and "We Used to be Friends," that was about the extent of my DWs knowledge prior to getting a few of their recently.  First listen on this one makes me think they're not my cuppa.  It's good enough, but it's not something I think I'd find myself going back to.

14. Jukebox the Ghost - Jukebox the Ghost
15. Safe Travels - Jukebox the Ghost - I saw these guys a long time ago at MPMF, might even have been the first year that Citybeat owned the festival, so how long ago was that?  So I've liked them a while, but not necessarily kept up with them.  Safe Travels I had heard before, back when Rdio was still around.  I enjoyed it, and will probably give it some more attention.  The self titled effort has a similar quality but there's no evolution there so it gets same-y.  These guys are what Walk the Moon could be, if they hadn't driven themselves off the Top 40 cliff.

16. The Very Best of Daryl Hall and John Oates - Hall & Oates - Yeah, I know.  This was about filling in holes in my library more than anything.  The stuff I've known all my life fits the nostalgia/guilty pleasure category.  The stuff I'm less familiar with doesn't hold up to 2018 sensibilities very well (not that "I Can't Go for That" really does either).  I'll keep the ubiquitous stuff and delete the rest.  Oddly, "Method of Modern Love," is a song that 'Weird' Al included in one of his polka medleys once and I had never known what the source was, now I do, but I'll never listen to it outside of the WAY medley again, turrible.

17. Most Messed Up - Old 97s - I have a complicated relationship with these guys.  I've had Fight Songs forever and I really love that album.  We went to see them live once, based on loving that album, and because so many people rave about their live show.  We thought they were boring as fuck.  I've tried several albums since then and they really don't do much for me, this one is no exception.  It's not bad, it's just not exciting in any way.

18. She's About to Cross My Mind - The Red Button -  Pandora served the title single up to me one day and I fell for it instantly, this is exactly the sort of jangly pop that I like.  There's some Candy Butchers in here, some Belle and Sebastian, some Shoes.  Four and a half out of five would recommend.

I'm in a similar boat, as much as it pains me to admit it. I don't have the time like I used to for exploring. I've also lost a little of the passion. And, duh, a different job that doesn't really allow it. So I feel ya.

The Spotify monthly list is gold, though. You should look into it.

Seconded.

Spotify also makes you the Discover Weekly playlist, which is pretty good at throwing bands your way you might like based on your listening history (I assume). There's also the Daily Mix. It may only be algorithms, but they're pretty good ones.

The Red Button just released a retrospective either this week or last week that you can check out.  It has their first two albums (She's About To Cross My Mind and the possibly even better As Far as Yesterday Goes) plus an ep of new stuff.

Seth Swirsky is one of the more interesting people in music.  As a musician, he's an indie/powerpop guy known only to a few lonely, middle-aged men who still listen to powerpop.

As a person, he's crazy rich.  He wrote the Thomas's English Muffin jingle when he was 20 or something.  He also wrote Taylor Dane's Tell it to My Heart.

He's also written some books.  He's a huge baseball fan, and he has three books which are collections of letters he wrote as fan to famous baseball players and their responses.  It's pretty cool, because he asks them some interesting questions, and their responses often reveal something about them you didn't know before.

He also owns the baseball that went between Bill Buckner's legs.  Or he used to.  I think he sold it to Charlie Sheen.

Seth Swirsky is one of the more interesting people in music.  As a musician, he's an indie/powerpop guy known only to a few lonely, middle-aged men who still listen to powerpop.

You're talking about us, aren't you?

Spotify also makes you the Discover Weekly playlist

I like these.  But it's pretty annoying when a band comes out with, say, a re-release that's full of demos of famous tracks.  Like for about 2 months, I was getting a Fleetwood Mac demo every week on this.  I don't freaking want to hear the demo version of "Monday Morning", thanks.

And it's a shame that you are so wrong about "Method of Modern Love".  That's a cheesy mid-80's classic.  That might've been their last hit too.

Yeah, it's not perfect. Every so often I get a track I've already listened to approximately one crapload of times, or something equally incongruous.

I like about half of the album, but overall, each and every new release from Lana gets me less and less interested. I couldn't find much interest in her very latest. "Born To Die", her debut album, still resonates and towers over all of her subsequent albums. As an aside, "Born To Die" is still on the Billboard 200, now 6+ years later, so it's not just me.

If you haven't gotten into the Rolling Stones by now, I'm pretty sure you never will.... And that album surely isn't the best entry point, a mediocre album at best. If you are really new to the Stones, I can give you some better entry points.

I like it okay.  I would argue that hearing because it showcases a different side to them, while still remaining a legit Stones album and not just a sell out piece of poo like pretty much anything from the last 30 years.

Everyone has already heard their classic stuff.  So I think if youíre not really into the Stones, thereís an album which might spur you into thinking  them differently even if ultimately you donít think itís good.

Full Disclosure:  I am not into the Stones.  Love, love, love Exile.  Indifferent or more often openly hostile to just about everything else theyíve done.

As ZK posted, head over to Exile On Main Street, or Sticky Fingers, the 2 most essential Stones albums, truly in their prime

1. Shut Down the Streets - A.C. Newman
2. The Slow Wonder - A.C. Newman
3. Sorry is Gone - Jessica Lea Mayfield
4. Man About Town - Mayer Hawthorne
5. Wanted on Voyage - George Ezra
6. In///Parrallel - Dhani Harrison
7. S/T - Rainer Maria
8. Baby Driver (Music From the Motion Picture)
9 Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
10. Hedwig and Angry Inch Original Cast Recording
11. Yoko - Beulah
12. Invitation - Filthy Friends
13. This Machine - The Dandy Warhols
14. Jukebox the Ghost - Jukebox the Ghost
15. Safe Travels - Jukebox the Ghost
16. The Very Best of Daryl Hall and John Oates - Hall & Oates
17. Most Messed Up - Old 97s
18. She's About to Cross My Mind - The Red Button

19. CTRL - Sza - Had to see what all the hype was about.  I like "Prom" and the song from Black Panther so I thought I should check it out.  Not too surprised that I am clearly not the audience for this.  It was fine, but I'd never listen to it again.

20. When Your Heartstrings Break - Beulah - Better than Yoko, not as good as The Coast is Never Clear.  Probably not a keeper.

21. How Do You Do
22. A Strange Arrangement - Mayer Hawthorne - I'm really digging his stuff.  Definitely a Mowtown-ish vibe.

23. ...Earth to The Dandy Warhols - The Dandy Warhols - Didn't do anymore for me than This Machine.

24. Random Access Memories - Daft Punk - Seems like I'd given this one a spin when it first came out, but I couldn't remember how I felt about it.  But, of course it's awesome, duh.

25. Fake Nudes -  Barenaked Ladies - I want to like post-Stephen Page BNL, but I just don't.  This wasn't bad per se, but there's nothing exciting about it.  I don't necessarily think it has anything to do with SP being gone, Ed is a perfectly capable songwriter and arguably a better vocalist, I think BNL is just played out.

26. The Suburbs - Arcade Fire - So, as promised, I'm trying some more of their stuff.  I do like it, and they are not at all what I thought they were, at least pre-Reflektor.  That said, this album could easily shave five (or seven) tracks and have every bit as much impact.  Sixteen tracks is way too long.

27. Capacity - Big Thief - Really enjoyed this one after a couple of listens.  "Shark Smile" and "Mary" are both great tracks, while being almost polar opposite vibes.

21- ty seagal- self titled- charlie's first slipup.  pretty terrible
23- black angels- clear lake forest ep- now this is better.  groovy

Best Coast's first album I thought was pretty good.  But yeah, California Nights was like someone took a lyrics class and then turned in a "D" paper.  All the most basic words and rhymes that you know and love are in there.  Although we do have to make a point for you to know she likes weed.

Get The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators album and then get Spacemen 3's Sound of Confusion album (they do an excellent cover of Rollercoaster.)

Daytime, are you just now getting around to MMJ's Evil Urges? just curious. That was their last 'essential' album (from 2008). I saw them at Bonnaroo in support of that, what a show that was, just stupendous in the best possible way.

If you haven't delved in MMJ further, check out Z, their 2005 album that is their very best album, period.

Not sure if your comment about MMJ's Z is a complement (probably not), but in my book it is the finest MMJ album they ever made, a timeless classic I still listen to today (on occasion). To think that album came out in 2005 just blows my mind, has it really been that long? My oh my, how time flies... <sigh>
