I've just never gotten into Hella.  I don't mind them, but I think there's other bands mining the same territory who do it much better.  I do think adding vocals makes them a lot more accessible and perhaps moves them from post-punk/experimental territory into more straight-up hard/alt rock in terms of radio play, but they do a decent job still staying true to their roots.

This should be a pretty successful album for them, and I don't begrudge them that.

I liked the older instrumental stuff well enough simply for the wierdness and awesome musicianship. They remind me of Lightning Bolt, although much more listener friendly. I used to be in a two piece band so I can appreciate what they've done in that regard. The new line-up is pretty interesting and although some of the songs on the new record were just a little too wierd...they got stuck into my head pretty bad for a long time.
