So what the hell is going on with Taco Bell's Feed the Beat contest?

Ted Leo says he was pranked, but Strike Anywhere says they applied.  I've met Ted Leo.  He's pretty sincere about his beliefs and all, but Strike Anywhere are nuts.  There must be shenanigans afoot.

More explanation necessary.

I've got some friends who won one of those prizes, and I'm trying to figure out how best to take advantage of this.

More explanation necessary.

Taco Bell has a contest where bands apply via email for $500 worth of Taco Bell food.  The concept being who could use the "fourth meal" more than a tired, hungry band on the road.

So most of the bands are just kind of no-name smaller bands, but there's some famous indie bands in there like Enon.  Ted Leo was a winner, only he's a vegan and somewhat anti-corporate.  It's kind of hard to see him wanting Taco Bell fast food.  It turns out someone sent an email under Ted Leo's name.

Strike Anywhere also won.  They are from Richmond, and they're a huge straight-edge, anti-corporation, extreme left-wing anarchist types. So it's weird that they would apply for the Taco Bell prize when it's everything they hate.  I can't see them saying "Hey, we'll just give bean burritos to the homeless and turn a bad thing good" even.  Because even then they'd be supporting consumerism and the corporatization of Mexican culture, etc. etc.  I mean, I disagree with their politics, but they are nice guys and sincere about their views.  Not the kind that would sell out.

But anyway, the band supposedly has affirmed they did apply for the contest.  So I can't imagine what they plan to do with the prize.

If only you could still add to the quotes at the upper right.  Well done!

Suede's self-titled debut and the Auteurs "New Wave" are inexorably linked in my mind.  I can not listen to one without immediately wanting to hear the other right after.

On a sort of similar note, while I was listening to those two albums today, I realized that there aren't many albums that have been released in the last few years who's lyrics I know backwards and forwards.  Not to say that I haven't really enjoyed the muck out of recent releases, but I'm finding that I am not spending as much time with them.  I'm also listening to a wider variety of styles rather than my old "if it ain't pasty Brits..." tendencies of my early 20's.

Can we make pasty brit jokes now? I think we know a few.

Anyway, I agree about the whole 'remembering lyrics' thing. I think I've become rather non-plussed about lyrics over time and have started listening more for musical styles instead, with a few exceptions.

As far as this thread goes... The Gorillaz "D Sides" are neither D or sides. Discuss.

Thoughts after listening to 1/3 of the Sarah Records singles catalog in order:

Heavenly-- Always good.
Field Mice-- Get a little tiring but for the most part always solid.
Even as We Speak-- A nice surprise. Never knew much about them, but some of their songs are fantastic.  Not when the dude sings, though.

In fact, that's the major lesson I've taken away so far:  Any twee with women singing is pretty awesome.  Twee with a dude?  Sketchy.  Very sketchy.  And as I type this, we transition into Sarah 0051 which is Heavenly.  Delightful.

I've still got about 150 songs to go, though.  And it's a long, 70 song string of what looks like endless sweetly pining sissy twee until the first Boyracer release.

I hit puberty the moment I first watched the video for Chris Isaac's "Wiked Game." I delved deeper into puberty with a Billy Idol video that I can't remember the name of... but it had a chick stopping into some dude's apartment, him spilling wine on her shirt, and then she started stripping... or something like that.

Those two videos made me who I am today. And I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

"Rock the Cradle of Love."  Betsy Lynn George.  Went on to do some horror/soft-porn videos.  Now a gymnastics coach.

Banging club tracks (usually found on compilations that contain any variations of the words "Ultimate," "Dance," "Party" or "volume" aren't really known for their lyrical content.  Pretty much all of them rhyme around the phrases "be free" or "it's alright."

Love is the key
See what you see
It's you and me
We've got to see
That it's time to be free.
It's alright.
Let yourself pee.

There, I am a songwriter (who probably just inadvertently plagiarized the number 3 song in the UK.)
