Next up in our fair and balanced REO fan feedback? A gent named Gari, who really brings it home when he writes:

"Sweaty midwest tunes are what made REO what they are."

Testify, brother! I think I'm finally starting to see where they're coming from at.

I gotta concur.  The weekest song on the new CD beats anything by Nirvan.

You will all be happy to learn that when you bring up the lyrics for "Can't Fight This Feeling" on lyricsfreak.com, the first in the list of "related links" is The Clash.

If I've said it once, I've said it a million times. REO Speedwagon is to rock and roll what The Clash was to biochemical engineering.

Now here's something we hope you'll really like!

From the blog "T.J. Monkey's" ...

For those of you who have been living under a rock for the last 30 years or who might have actual lives and been too busy to care about them, REO Speedwagon is a band that enjoyed worldwide fame and adulation from February 4, 1985 - February 7, 1985 after which the cable got turned back on, and everyone got back to watching the “Price is Right.” For those few days though, our generation was changed forever by the unapologetic lyrics of Kevin Cronin, the unforgiving bass of Bruce Hall, the silky auburn locks of Dave Amato, and the contributions of other guys in the band who are probably dead now or something.

It seems like hardly a day goes by when I am not asked, “Hey, by the way, whatever happened to REO Speedwagon?” This could be because I work at the REO Speedwagon Information Hotline, but I like to think it’s because the world burns to know more about REO. To quench this admirable thirst for knowledge, I recently had a chance to catch up with REO.

The band is infamous in their zealous protection of their own privacy but I managed to entice them into an interview by offering them money for heroin. We met at a local Starbucks, and they made quite an entrance piled into the back of a 1974 puke-green Chevette with tinted windows.

We sat down for the following interview:

    T. J. Monkeys: Well, guys, thanks for coming to meet with us.

REO Speedwagon: Yeah, you said something about heroin money. (It should be noted they all spoke in unison.)

TJM: Yeah, you’ll get your money after the interview. Now, I’ve got a few questions. Is it tough being on tour when in a recent poll 87% of respondents thought you were dead?

REO: Yeah, well, our hardcore fans know what the real score is, you know?

TJM: But this poll was taken of your friends and immediate family.

REO: They meant they think we are dead inside.

TJM: When do you plan to release a new album?

REO: (REO confers for a moment.) Dare.

    TJM: (Pause.) Double Dare.

REO: (Confers.) We’ll take the physical challenge.

At this point, REO tried to throw balloons full of green slime down drummer Bryan Hitt’s pants but they weren’t able to do it and I ended up winning a Sony Walkman.

So there you have it, the latest on REO Speedwagon. I have a feeling you’ll sleep a little easier tonight knowing that they are still together. I know I will. Because it means they are all in one place, and I am less likely to run into one of them.

Wrote REO fan and (God help him) blogger, Ty:

"What seperates [Kevin] Cronin from other frontman is that he really knows how to engage an audience with humor and story telling. He puts his songs in perspective and makes them relatable. Cronin makes you his friend. Today's groups really need to learn from the likes of Cronin. He knows how to treat his customers. I like a lot of today's music but are we really going to be hearing today's groups 20 years from now? Chances are about as good as me fitting into those 30 inch waist jeans again. Keeping on rolling REO.

Kevin Cronin might have made you his friend, Ty, but if I ever see him in person, I'm going to make him my bitch.

What the hell is going on here??!! For those of you playing along at home, you'll recall a few posts ago when REO and The Clash were inexplicably linked on a lyrics site.

Well.
Look.
At.
THIS.

From some guy's blog -- the ten songs that had just played randomly on his iPod:

   1. The Dance by Garth Brooks
   2. One Last Chance by James Morrison
   3. Rock the Casbah - The Clash
   4. Keep on Loving You - REO Speedwagon

   5. Revolution - The Beatles
   6. Once You’ve Had the Best - Alan Jackson
   7. Three Little Birds - Bob Marley
   8. No Ordinary Love - Sade
   9. Listen to Her Heart - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
  10. Let It Be Sung - Jack Johnson

Shame on me for taking 7 hours and 40 minutes to visit kevincronin.com! I could have stumbled on this perplexing nugget hours ago -- "ripped from the headlines" of Kevin's European tour diary!

"I’ll never forget seeing Steven Tyler, dancing along to “Like You Do” when we opened for Aerosmith back in 1976. One of the perks of doing multi-act shows is that we get to hear so much great live music, right up close. Megadeth was awesome tonight, as was Golden Earing.."

REO Speedwagon. Golden Earring. Megadeth. One of these things is not like the others. Come on now, can you tell me which one?

Jesus God, I'm done. This sucked. My head is pounding. And after all is said and done, I completely forgot to tell my "Can't Fight This Feeling" story from high school, which ends with me walking into the senior prom on the arm of a male model.

I'll meet you all in the "Having My Baby" thread in about 20 minutes. I have to walk the dog. (That's not a euphemism for peeing or for sex, unfortunately. I really do have to walk my dog.)
