I think I finally found my problem: it has to do with my ID3 tags. Either iTunes 8.2.x can't play files that have stored artwork or it doesn't like my version of ID3 tags. Ugh.

That's weird.  I'm pretty sure itunes can play files with artwork encoded, if push comes to shove, I think you can move the artwork from the files into the itunes artwork folder.  More detailed explanation here.

iTunes used to be able to play files with artwork encoded, but with 8.2, something broke when a certain version of ID3 is used to embed the artwork. So it's not a problem with all my files, just the ones I've acquired recently from eMusic. Tunes ripped from CDs with iTunes still play fine, as are eMusic tracks from earlier in the summer.

I knew I shouldn't have upgraded.

I know I shouldn't bother using the crappiest program around, iTunes.

I've just gotten used to iTunes; it works so well with the iPod and managing my Podcasts.

I do have Media Monkey installed. I just have to figure out to use it to change the tags to something iTunes will recognize.

At least my iPod still will play the tracks.

I'm sure my iTunes hates me. I am probably like 4-5 updates behind the times.

Sigh. My iTunes has 15 or 20 playlists loaded into it, but when I synch my iphone to it the playlists aren't there. Any thoughts or suggestions?

For the record, the new tracks I added to the library ARE there, just not the playlists they were intended for. Everything else seems to be fine.

Also for the record - I downloaded some episodes of the Kevin Pollack Chat Show not realizing that those are all video. I didn't have the space for them, so when I synched up iTunes gave me an option to no longer synch podcasts, which I hit "okay" on. I have deleted those episodes but don't know how to get my iphone to re-synch with the podcasts. I don't know if this has to do with the the playlists, but it might?

Help?

Did you go into the 'music' option and select the playlist feature?  I think there's a podcast option that should let you select which ones you want to add, too.

When I sync my iPhone up with my iTunes it lists all the categories that are taking up space. Audio, Photos, Apps, etc. One of them is "other" and I can't figure out what that is. I would assume it's the operating system and such, but if that's the case then it wouldn't keep growing, right?

It's now at 1.1 GB of space, and I'd like to reduce this. I've cleared out stuff like old txt messages, address book contacts, recent calls, etc, but that doesn't have any impact.

Any ideas or suggestions?

It could be cover art, text documents, other things that your apps don't store.  Part of it is the OS, yeah.

I've done a little web searching, and it sounds like there are two solutions.

1) do a restore of the phone. I'm not sure what this requires of me and would prefer not to do so.

2) Some user comments suggested "goto settings/ safari and clear history, cookies and cache" I will definitely try this at home tonight. I found that idea below this article:
http://www.iphonefaq.org/archives/97281

It sounds like "other" should take up 300 MB, which is a lot better than the (currently) 1.45 GB that it is consuming. And some of those users had 4 GB or even 7GB, so clearly this is something that should be rectified by Apple. If it's as simple as your clearing your cache they should at least make this solution more publicized.

I hope it works.

This might be a REALLY stupid question, but I can't find where it's been asked previously.  Can you use iTunes in conjunction with any brand of mp3 player?  My ipod is fried, and I'm not sure I'm up for paying that price for another when I can get a well-reviewed non-ipod mp3 player for half or less.
