Marvel's press release

Man.
I never thought I'd end up collecting comic books.

Yeah, when we first started dating in college and I found out that Brian collected comics, I was like, "oh god.  am i dating a dork???"  But he totally got me into the whole comic book culture.  Of course, I pretty much only like the more indie stuff, and he reads some of everything.

But, it'll be OK!  Comics are fun.  I'd be totally interested in a Stand comic as well.

The best thing about this is Mike Perkins on the art. I met him a few years ago in a bar during a convention and he showed me some hush hush stuff he'd been working on at the time, and I was blown away. His pencils look SO much better than anything that's been inked or colored. He's an amazing artist, super nice guy (he's a Brit), and I've been following his career ever since. The Stand is one of my favorite books of all time, so this is a no-brainer for me.

Anybody else pick this up?

It was so short!  Not only was there not much of the story, but it actually seemed short page-wise.  At this rate it'll take like a hundred books to equal The Stand.

This was only 1 of 5 too.  I'm guessing they're mostly going to just intro the main characters in the first five books?

I didn't care for it.  It seems like a comic adaptation of the movie.  I don't care for the art either... it looks like traced over photographs.  Like those "Talk to Chuck" commercials.

I thought maybe it was 1 of 5 of the first part - the part about the plague.  But maybe I'm just being optimistic.  I can't imagine them covering the entire story in 5 parts.  I love the story, so I'll keep buying, but I, too, was not crazy about the art.

okay, so apparently they're skipping December and the 4th in the series comes out Jan 2nd

According to wikipedia, there are going to be 30 issues total.

I'm seriously considering skipping this and waiting for the big book.  The ones I saw for the Gunslinger series are pretty nice.  Of course they're 25, and those are only 6 book sets...

The big problem with the Gunslinger book is that it doesn't include all of the printed stories that are in each issue.  Maybe The Stand will be the same?

Oh, that's a bummer.  That backstory stuff is half of why I like the Gunslinger comics.

According to the Stephen King website, if you haven't picked up the new edition of The Gunslinger that came out a few years ago, now might be the time.  A new editon is coming out that has The Little Sisters of Eluria story attached as well.  I guess I'll xpost this to the Gunslinger thread in pulp, but I figured it was worth a mention.  The artwork is suppsoed to be featured heavily in this edition.

How many different editions of that book do they think people need?  Sheesh.

Yeah, I love Stephen King and all, but I won't be re-buying any of his books.  As it is, my SK collection consists of battered paper backs.  I haven't bought any of his new books either...just borrowing them from the library.  I'm reading Duma Key right now.  It's the schiznit.

If you want the newer ones I suggest you patrol the clearance section at Half Price books, Julie's gotten pretty much all of them in hard back for a couple of bucks or less.  They either get to many, or they get one with a little scuff or rip in the dust jacket and they can't get their usual $6 - $8 for them.

Thanks for the tip.  I don't really collect books or much anything else.  It all takes up precious living room that is constantly being infringed upon by my children.  Maybe when they move out I might try to collect something worthwhile.
