It was wet. And muddy. And rainy. And wet. And rainy. And more rainy. Did I mention that it rained? Normal late summer rains around here come rolling in and then move on in 25 minutes or something like that. This lasted 2.5 hours. 2.5 hours!! Of POURING rain. If it was just a drizzle that would have been one thing, but this was like those rains we'd get after a hurricane hit down south somewhere and the leftover clouds finally hit where I was living.

And the fact that i just spent a whole paragraph on the weather shouldn't belittle the awesomeness of the bands - it's just that I didn't get to fully appreciate the music b/c of the miserableness of the weather. YYYs were great - they were my personal headliner as I'd always wanted to see them but never could make it to their gigs. The National sounded tremendous. I wish it wasn't pouring during their set so I could have appreciated them more. I had fun with RRR although I was hoping for some new songs. VW was better than I expected, but I don't dig them all that much. Jay-Z... has a lot of stuff going on in his songs. He opened with a mashup of No Sleep Till Brooklyn as he was the replacement for the Beastie Boys when they had to cancel due to cancer, so that was pretty cool. We left midway through his set since neither of us were really into his music. He was definitely a presence, tho.

In September 2003 I saw the Warlocks open up for BRMC. Their keyboardist wasn't wearing a bra and was just wearing a thin t-shirt, so I spent the whole show just staring at her boobies bouncing up and down the whole time. It was wonderful.

8. August 6 - Coldplay with Kitty Davis & Lewis and Elbow, Walnut Creek Amphitheater, Raleigh, NC - The opening act was okay; Elbow was fantastic, but had much too short a set ; and Coldplay knows how to put on a show. The lights, lasers, giant globes, balloons, and confetti were all great additions. We were about 40 feet away from Stage C (which is in the front of the lawn). If I had thought about it a bit more, I would have staked out our spot a bit closer, but I had tried to position us so we had a unobstructed view of the main stage instead. I didn't realize what a good singer Will (the drummer) is; he also played guitar when on Stage C.

While I didn't get any great photos from way back, someone else got this video from the Stage C part: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0hx3IOtpdA

1 9/5/09 - KSO Boogie Band play "What is Hip?" (Devou Park Amphitheatre, Covington)

My first show of the year! As with last years free KSO show the musicianship was awesome, the vocals utter pants. Good vibe in the park though and as varied an audience as you could possibly imagine

17. The Warlocks (Chop Suey, Seattle) 08/01
18. The Dead Weather (Paramount Theatre, Seattle) 08/20  The show started off with insane energy, but it calmed down after about three songs and it was hard to keep the momentum after that. Really surprised with how good the guitarist was, great light show and Jack White is a much better drummer than I thought as well. Sadly his voice gave out and he literally couldn't sing for the last couple of songs.

JR,

U2 was wonderful.  The stage setup was quite something, but the design allows everyone to get a view of the stage (though reading comments from those in GA, they complained, but i figure for them, you can choose to stand wherever you wish, and if you choose to be blocked, it's your own problem).  Driving into town, I could see the top part of the stage rising above Soldier Field.  They played 7 songs from the new album, and then had a mix of older/newer from other albums.  They did a remix of I'll Go Crazy if I Don't Go Crazy tonight which I hope gets released.  Bono's voice was strong and the rest of the band played well, I think they were all happy to start this leg of the tour.  Adam seemed to hang back a bit (location-wise) while Edge appeared to enjoy moving around the stage and walkways.  Even Larry took a bongo drum out and walked around for one of the songs, and for a few others, his drum set was on a moving platform so that it was facing the "back" of the stage.  I took some pics, and if they're any good will post them.
