77 Green Zone
A fictional (if you will) "companion piece" to "The Hurt Locker". A stark reminder about how the world got involved in the Iraqi war based on fake intelligence. Information about imaginary WMDs most likely invented by the "military machine" to boost profits, with the added 'coincidence' of finding oil fields previously under an evil dictator's control. Satisfyingly mocks George W Bush's infamous "Mission Accomplished" moment of madness. Decent enough action thriller once again pairing director Paul Greengrass and Team America's favourite Hollywood superstar, Maaaattt Daaaaamon.

20. Sherlock Holmes - Really enjoyed this one, the sarcasm alone is worth the watch.

21. Shutter Island - Yep, exactly what everybody else said.  Hard to get into, predictable at the end but a pretty good watch nonetheless.

22. The Awful Truth - An old Cary Grant movie... it was okay.

23. Meet Me in St. Louis - Judy Garland and her pals sing a stupid song over and over again.  Ma Kettle was the best part of the movie.

So happy to see so many of my movie buddies up on the big screen again. It was a great story, worthy of the TOY STORY name. LOVED! Oh - no need to see it in 3D. I don't think it would lose ANYTHING in regular format.

38. The Road - 7

39. A Serious Man - 7

As with many Coen films, the atmosphere and the characterizations are more important than the story.  In this case, they pretty much ARE the story.  I had a good many laughs, not the least of which was the rabbi reciting Jefferson Airplane lyrics to a boy who had just been through his bar mitzvah.  Although the ending left both Andrea and I flat, it was still worthwhile.

40. Shutter Island - 9

Thought this was really well done, and didn't find it to be as pedestrian as many I've heard speak of it had.  Don't know if people are just jaded by the "twist" endings now or what, but I found this to be far from predictable and atmospherically close to perfect.  Acting was top-notch all around, and +1 for a Max von Sydow sighting.

am i crazy or was the book version of Shutter Island

way more ambigious about what was going down?
I read it awhile ago, so maybe I just don't remember correctly, but I swear I walked away thinking that there was a 50/50 chance that he wasn't nutz

Do we have the book?  I'd like to read it.

You need to add Shutter Island to your movie list, by they way.

1) The Hangover - It was funny I guess.  Never been to Vegas, so a lot of it was lost on me.
2) Inglorious Basterds - Pretty kickass when Brad Pitt was on the screen.  Still cool otherwise.
3) District 9 - One of the best Sci-Fi movies I've ever seen.  I'm buying this one to add to my DVD collection of like 20 films.
4) G-Force - About as lame as I figured it would be.  I'm still amazed Tracy Jordan does voice overs for kids movies.
5) Moon - I'd never even heard of this before I read all of your reviews.  I liked it.  I wasn't blown away by it, but I thought it was a good, solid sci-fi movie.  It was a refreshing change to have the robot not trying to kill the guy.
6) The Hurt Locker - I liked this.  I've been sick of shoot 'em up war movies and this was more of a sciency take on war.  I wish there was more cool bomb diffusing stuff.
7) 9 - Pretty much as awesome as I expected it to be.
8 ) Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs - I thought it was freakin' hillarious.  So did the kids.  The wife, not so much.  I think she's a purist and wanted it to be like the book.  But face it, that would be pretty boring.  Loved the Monkey Thought Translator and the Rat Birds.
9) The Fantastic Mr. Fox - An excellent adaptation.  I thought it stayed very true to the spirit of the book.  It was funny and sweet and madcap.  The use of the Beach Boys was pretty artful.
10) Surrogates - Somewhat interesting premise, crappily done.  Once I learned the antagonist's motivation, I was done.
11) Yes Man - Another typical Jim Carrey movie.  It was good, mindless, folding the laundry entertainment.
12) Bright Star - Got suckered into watching this stupid, boring period piece about people wearing silly hats.  So slow my wife even fell asleep and it was her pick.
13) Up In The Air - Depressing watch for me.  Too many lay offs coupled with a boring back story and uninteresting characters.
14) Ponyo - This was excellent.  Miyazaki always delivers on the super adorable.
15) The Princess and the Frog - The kids loved it, the wife had some kind of argument on how Disney is racist, I just thought it was awesome animation and enjoyed the whole thing.
16) Where the Wild Things Are - Boring as shit.  It was like taking some off your favorite childhood creatures and using them as puppets to conduct a therapy session.
17) Astro Boy - I used to love watching this show when I was a kid, so I was worried about this one.  They did a really good job with it though and made Astro Boy the same humble super powered robot he was in the manga.
18) Twilight: New Moon - I got guilted into watching this with the wife.  The only thing good I can say about it was it was tbetter than the first one, much in the same way that one turd is a prettier shade of brown than another one.
19) How To train Your Dragon 2D - What a cool movie.  Pretty faithful to the original books and really fun and heartwarming.  We loved it.
20) Ninja Assasin - Stupidly boring.
21) Strangers on a Train - Caught this Saturday night on TCM's Essentials series.  I would agree that it is essential viewing.  It was the best Hitchcock movie I've ever seen.
22) Kick-Ass - What a fun movie.  Pretty much a must see for comic book nerds.
23) Sherlock Holmes - WOW!...soooooo good.  I really hope there's a sequel and that it is also directed by Guy Ritchie.  Just checked IMDB on a whim and it looks like there will be one...Untitled Sherlock Holmes Sequel (2011) (pre-production)
24) Alice in Wonderland - We really dug this.  Pretty cool effects and whatnot.  Loved the Jabberwocky and and how they tried to model a lot of it from the Lewis Carrol novel illustrations.
25) The Road - Finally got to check this out.  Similar to the book, but not as bleak, if you can imagine that.  The narrative style was o.k., but there's no way they could have come close to the narrative style in the book.  Save your money and go to the library and get the book.
26) Bruno - Alright...I'm getting off the Sasha Baron Cohen train now.
27) I Love You Man - This movie was great.  I related with the main character on just about every level.
28 - 30) Toy Story 1, 2 & 3 - I've seen bits and pieces of 1 and 2, but never the whole movie.  In the build up to the new release, we DVRd 1 and 2 and I finally got a chance to watch them.  Each film was consistently excellent.  3 was equally excellent.  Buzz's Spanish Mode still has me cracking up.

29) The Last Airbender 2D - Reading the reviews before I went, I expected this movie to suck.  I was happily surprised that it didn't suck.  I'm a big fan of the cartoon, so I didn't want it to suck.  I think they did a good job with casting and the effects were good.  They could have done a lot of stuff differently, but I'm not gonna' complain too much.  I only have two major gripes.  They change the pronunciation of almost all of the character's names for some reason.  This nagged at me throughout the whole movie.  Also, Appa and Momo were kinda' thrown in as if they were an afterthought.  They never showed much detail on Appa and Momo just kinda' flitted around the screen every once in awhile.  Oh, and one other thing...there was no humor in the film.  Soka was serious all the time and he's usually the comic relief.  But aside from that, it wasn't horrible.  The kids loved it.

New-to-me movies are bolded.

1. Up In the Air
2. Bottle Rocket
3. The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus  I could have used a little bit more exposition, but visually amazing.
4. The Hangover Funny, but Bradley Cooper's character was annoying. Would have been better in the theater
5. Avatar 3-D version.  As has been stated before, so pretty
6. The House Bunny It didn't suck. And was way more conservative/traditional than I would have expected.
7. Keeping Mum Maggie Smith plays a psychopath, Rowan Atkinson plays a normal person, and Patrick Swayze plays a sleazy golf pro.
8. Tin Man Sy-fy mini series redoing "The Wizard of Oz".  Stick to the original, as Zooey D. is annoying and Alan Cumming is underused.
9. The Talented Mr. Ripley Who knew you could feel sympathy for a psychopath?
10. When in Rome Cute, predictable, and snappier than expected.
11. Gods and Monsters very quiet film, and interesting look at the director who created Frankenstein and Showboat.
12. 2010 Academy Award Nominated Animated Short Films
13. 2010 Academy Award Nominated Short Films
14. In Good Company Dennis Quaid = good, Scarlett Johannsen = I don't understand the appeal.
15. Shaun the Sheep off the Baa By Nick Park, lots of sheep shorts. Previews were for the under 5 yo crowd.
16. Alice in Wonderland 3D.  Just enough Johnny Depp.  Good flick, very fun, and remarkably not scary-creepy.
17. Saving Face Chinese lesbian living in New York tries to keep her life from her mother.
18. Hogfather Another Sy-Fy type movie. Really need to stop watching these, because they aren't as good as they should be.
19. Fanboys So fun, and the music was dead-on.  I'll leave all other fan-wanking to people more vested in Star wars.
20. How to Train Your Dragon 3-d.  I think I should be getting residuals for dragon-inspiration.  Toothless= dead ringer for my cat!
21. Sex, Lies, and Videotape- I still love James Spader, though he has creepy characters nailed.
22. 17 Again.  Sucked Again
23. The Proposal- not too bad on the plane
24. Four Rooms  Interesting combo of short films.  Tarantino is annoying, though.
25. Barbershop  Light movie, and pretty funny.  I'd heard it was good, and I definitely enjoyed it.
26. Babies very cute, and we westerners way smother our kids.  Look out for goats!
27. Shrek 4 It was what it was.  Needed more Gingy and Puss.
28. A Lot Like Love Ashton Kutcher is actually pretty good! I liked this movie alot- it would be a good one to watch again.
[/quote]

Did I really not watch any movies in June?  Wow.
29. Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay. Like the first one better, but NPH makes this one for me.
30. Leonard Maltin's Animation Favorites I'm counting these, because they are movie shorts. Sponsored by the Canadian Film board. Interesting, especially some of the really old ones. Thanks, Netflix.

1. Triplets of Belleville
2. The Road
3. Paris, je t'aime
4. Bruno
5. The Simpsons Movie
6. The Hangover
7. Wet Hot American Summer
8. Extract
9. The Devil and Daniel Johnston
10. Zombieland
11. An Inconvienent Truth
12. Hotel Rwanda
13. Moon
14. Food Inc.
15. In the Loop
16. The Hurt Locker
17. Big Fan
18. A Serious Man
19. Murderball

22. Crazy Love
23. The Yes Men
24. Where the Wild Things Are
25. Wendy & Lucy
26. Who Killed the Electric Car?
27. Jesus is Magic
28. Broken Embraces - Decent movie. It revolves around a blind screen writer recounting his past to his protege. It involves an actress (Penelope Cruz honk, honk) he falls in love with and her much older husband who becomes insanely jealous. The ending felt incomplete to me but it definitely was worth the two hours in front of the TV. Also, the woman the writer has sex with right at the beginning of the movie is AMAZINGLY smoking hot! That alone made it worthwhile to me.

44. THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (Man som hatar kvinnor) - 07/10/10 - RedBox DVD - 5 out of 5 - I haven't read the books but I wanted to go ahead and see this so that I could check out the second movie in the theatres (if I liked it enough). OH MAN. How great was this movie!?!?!? SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO great. Sucked me in immediately and didn't let me go. Perfection.
45. THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE (Flickan som letke med elden) - 07/10/10 - Lefont Sandy Springs - 3 out of 5 - Noomi was still a super badass but this one couldn't live up to the amazing first installment. However, I'm really chomping at the bit for the 3rd movie. I'm guessing that will take quite a while since the book just came out. But, I think they filmed all of the films in an 18 month period. So, maybe I'll get lucky. I may read the third book in preparation.
46. THE SLAMMIN' SALMON - 07/11/10 - RedBox DVD - 1 out of 5 - I'm being generous. It was pretty awful. What happened, Brozen Lizard Guys??!?!?! Was SUPER TROOPERS really such a fluke!?

Sure it's a Rom-Com by numbers but these are bad, BAD numbers, and all in the wrong order. About as good as discovering there's one chocolate left in the box but someone's already chewed it.
79 It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
Haven't seen this for donkeys-yonks so thought I'd revisit its 1963 charm (courtesy of TCM, who even included the 10-minute intermission screen!). Some good set pieces but overall not as funny as I remember it. The "Cannonball Run" of its time given all the star turns it presents. Of course now "Underneath the W" would mean something entirely different than it did back then.
80 The International
Forgot that I'd already seen it, but watched it again anyway. The shoot-out at the Guggenheim was pretty impressive. The producers built a full-sized replica of the snazzy interior... WTF?!

30) The Last Truck: Closing of a GM Plant - A decent documentary.  Hit close to home because it reminded me of my own layoff experiences from a manufacturing plant.  It generated a lot of discussion between me and the wife.
