48. Dinner for Schmucks - 4.5
49. The Sorceror's Apprentice - 5
50. Stepbrothers - 6

51. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus - 6

Great cast, great visuals, snappy direction, funny set pieces, Tom Waits as the devil, and so on.  This movie had any number of things going for it.  But it made no fucking sense whatsoever.

52. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World - 7

I really enjoyed the full commitment to the comic book and video game world that this movie made.  Kieran Culkin was by far the best character in the movie, but Michael Cera annoyed me slightly less than normal, even if he still didn't show any range.  But that still didn't make me understand what exactly ANYONE saw in this Ramona Flowers girl (or, I guess, in the actress who played her), besides being marginally cute and having colorful hair.

53. Going the Distance - 5

This was average.  I really believed the story and the characters, even while I was peripherally aware that they were in fact Drew Barrymore and Justin Long.  Drew is looking her age now, for sure.  I liked the plot device of having them both work in dying industries, thus making for the built-in excuse that neither of them could find a job near the other... but overall it wasn't all that funny, nor particularly romantic.

23) Paris Je T'Aime

As with anything like this, it was uneven.  But there were certain parts that were absolutely brilliant.  And only one scene (the scene with the guy trying to sell things to the Asian hairdressers) that was plain bad.

I can't help feeling that this little documentary about the 'art of the guitar' missed a few tricks. Yes, it was fun to hear the stories that The Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White told each other,  but the real joy (for me anyway) was watching them watch each other play. I loved how The Edge and White walked over and examined Page's fretwork when he broke into "Whole Lotta Love" obviously trying to work out how he created the sound. The best part for me though was how Page's face and body got all animated as he played his old 45 of Link Wray's "The Rumble" - supposedly his inspiration for learning the guitar - a lovely little segment. However, is it at all fair to say that White came across as a bit of a tool?

Harrowing PBS documentary featuring footage from one family's camcorder from before, during and in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Mindblowing experiences are all captured and the post-storm devastation - both in physical and emotional terms - are palpable. It served to remind me that Bush let these American citizens down BADLY.

"Death Wish" meets "Grumpy Old Men" in this vigilante thriller. Michael Caine comes out gums and guns blazing to take down a gang of hoodlums terrorizing his estate. Some nice performances but a handful of hammy clichιs tend to undermine the suspense.

A) I'm beginning to think 3D movies actually do very little to add to the quality of any story. I'd rather have my $4 surcharge back and see it in 2D. What a bullshit racket.

B) I know deep down that any film that's the 4th in a series isn't really going to be good, so I should have lowered my expectations. But I really liked part 3 so I thought maybe they knew what they were doing? Foolish.

C) There were too many things wrong with the movie for me to actually mention them here. But a few simple ones that could have been done so much better: Alice finds Claire in the woods and she's really really dirty and disgusting. That was awesome and I dug the attempt at realism. The next scene she's got her tied up in the airplane and Claire... looks like she's done herself up as if she's going out on the town. What? These characters are living in an uncivilized world. Their looks should be awful. I know that this isn't going to happen in actuality, but the juxtaposition of Claire in one scene and Claire in another was too much.

Or another issue was some really cool visuals of a burnt out and destroyed Los Angeles. They had fun building these completely destroyed skyscrapers in some computer program. Except that this takes place YEARS after the world exploded, and yet... these buildings are still smoldering!?!?!?!? SMOLDERING? I mean really... come on guys. Unless zombies have learned how to make fires and keep them tended to, this isn't right.

And one of the best parts of part 3 was that Alice breaks in to the Umbrella Corporations lab and finds tons of clones of herself that they were trying to experiment on. You know, speed, strength, alpha-beta waves, etc. And that was a great cliffhanger - a whole bunch of Alices coming at them. That should have been the movie. The opening scene is them attacking another Umbrella stronghold, but after that it's just one Alice again. I wanted a whole movie of tons of Milla Jovovich (although a counterpoint was that when one of those clones died, I realized I had no emotional attachment to them and was just like "meh, where's the next one?" so maybe the writers realized this? Doubtful.). And also in those previous movies part of what I loved was how Alice has been given all these crazy abilities but she struggles to cope with them as she doesn't feel human and it's clearly a burden on her - and painful to boot. This should have been a primary conflict of the film. Instead... um, they "solve" that problem in the first scene? Huh? Seriously guys? What? You had a gold mine here and just eliminated it? Booooorrrring.

Spencer Locke got opening title credits, so I was like "oh, K-Mart is back. Cool." She's in one scene and barely does anything. WTF? Ugh. Or the British actress/swim champ? Fun... and they kill her right away. Ugh. So disappointing.

I do remember thinking as the movie was getting toward the end that I wasn't sure how I would be satisfied with the end of the full story. Silly me for assuming. They ended with another cliffhanger, and that ... well, it won't ever be finished. This film was so crappy that I do hope they never film another. Plus... how old is Milla Jovovich now? She's not young, and although she looked fantastic in this, I'm fearing what a few more years will do to her if they decide on a fifth installment. But if they were to ever decide on a "finish" to the story, the only things I could really have been satisfied with would be to have something that gets invented that is a contagious parasite to the zombies, and they eventually all die off and the remaining few humans start over. That's sort of a neat wrap up of an otherwise complicated story. Anything else will be annoying, suck, or frustrating.

ETA: Groundhog Day. Still hilarious and awkward and just plain weird. How did they ever sell that film to the studio? Hey, we're making a surreal film where a guy wakes up and it's the same day over and over? He remembers what happened to him the day before but everyone else has no idea how this can be? Did a studio actually buy that concept? Well... I'm glad they did.

70. JENNIFER'S BODY - 09/10/10 - HBO - 3.5 out of 5 - I'm pretty sure that I liked this a whooooole lot more than I was supposed to. The dialogue cracked me up. Amanda Seyfried is freakin' hott. Loved the whole Satanic rock band thing. Right up my alley.
71. MACHETE - 09/11/10 - Starlight Drive-In - 3 out of 5 - perfect drive-in movie. Didn't come close to EL MARIACHI or DESPERADO for me (though some scenes were definitely direct rip-offs from both films) but it still made me laugh and giggle and cheer. Trejo was great. Alba is aaaaaaaaawful. Cheech is always welcome on screen. If only he had some face time with Nash Bridges. Speaking of which, I would have been much happier if Don Johnson's role had been bigger. He was perfectly cast.
72. PIRANHA 3D - 09/11/10 - Starlight Drive-In - 3 out of 5 - not in 3D but that didn't stop the fun. B00bies and bl00d.

New to me movies are bolded.

1. Up In the Air
2. Bottle Rocket
3. The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus  I could have used a little bit more exposition, but visually amazing.
4. The Hangover Funny, but Bradley Cooper's character was annoying. Would have been better in the theater
5. Avatar 3-D version.  As has been stated before, so pretty
6. The House Bunny It didn't suck. And was way more conservative/traditional than I would have expected.
7. Keeping Mum Maggie Smith plays a psychopath, Rowan Atkinson plays a normal person, and Patrick Swayze plays a sleazy golf pro.
8. Tin Man Sy-fy mini series redoing "The Wizard of Oz".  Stick to the original, as Zooey D. is annoying and Alan Cumming is underused.
9. The Talented Mr. Ripley Who knew you could feel sympathy for a psychopath?
10. When in Rome Cute, predictable, and snappier than expected.
11. Gods and Monsters very quiet film, and interesting look at the director who created Frankenstein and Showboat.
12. 2010 Academy Award Nominated Animated Short Films
13. 2010 Academy Award Nominated Short Films
14. In Good Company Dennis Quaid = good, Scarlett Johannsen = I don't understand the appeal.
15. Shaun the Sheep off the Baa By Nick Park, lots of sheep shorts. Previews were for the under 5 yo crowd.
16. Alice in Wonderland 3D.  Just enough Johnny Depp.  Good flick, very fun, and remarkably not scary-creepy.
17. Saving Face Chinese lesbian living in New York tries to keep her life from her mother.
18. Hogfather Another Sy-Fy type movie. Really need to stop watching these, because they aren't as good as they should be.
19. Fanboys So fun, and the music was dead-on.  I'll leave all other fan-wanking to people more vested in Star wars.
20. How to Train Your Dragon 3-d.  I think I should be getting residuals for dragon-inspiration.  Toothless= dead ringer for my cat!
21. Sex, Lies, and Videotape- I still love James Spader, though he has creepy characters nailed.
22. 17 Again.  Sucked Again
23. The Proposal- not too bad on the plane
24. Four Rooms  Interesting combo of short films.  Tarantino is annoying, though.
25. Barbershop  Light movie, and pretty funny.  I'd heard it was good, and I definitely enjoyed it.
26. Babies very cute, and we westerners way smother our kids.  Look out for goats!
27. Shrek 4 It was what it was.  Needed more Gingy and Puss.
28. A Lot Like Love Ashton Kutcher is actually pretty good! I liked this movie alot- it would be a good one to watch again.
29. Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay. Like the first one better, but NPH makes this one for me.
30. Leonard Maltin's Animation Favorites I'm counting these, because they are movie shorts. Sponsored by the Canadian Film board. Interesting, especially some of the really old ones. Thanks, Netflix.
31. Desk Set Hepburn/Tracy as a reference librarian and an efficiency expert.  Still very relevant to today, though google has made lots of the drama obsolete.  Very good!
32. Best in Show    Still very good, though I prefer a mighty wind
33.Toy Story      Haven't seen in years, but it was soooo good. Am ready to see the third part now!
34. Up     Again, Pixar does amazing things with stories.
35. Pinnochio    Came in half-way through, but I'm counting it as "seen".  Don't lie, or your nose will grow!
36. Toy Story 3 A delightful experience, and I admit, I was teary eyed multiple times.
37. Despicable Me Also fun, and amazingly light. Loved how Vortex's stuff was all Apple-y and seamless.
38. We are Marshall Those kids were babies.  Matthew McC. wasn't bad in this, amazingly
39. Bourne Identity   Time for the annual viewing! Damon is looking like a child in this one. Still so very good.

40. Ponyo Miyazaki does it again, nice tight story, interesting world was created, and the goldfish was red.
41. Pixar's Shorts, Vol. 1 Included the one with the lamp, which I hadn't seen, and the short that inspired Toy Story Very good!
