60. The Lottery -
8This was good, but got really tense during the stoning scene...
*whispers*What? You mean, this wasn't based on the Shirley Jackson short story that everyone read in high school?
Ah, no, this was actually a documentary about a lottery for kids to get into the 4 outstanding Charter Schools in Harlem. The kids they picked were a nice cross-section, although there was not a happy ending for all. The part of the movie I didn't like was that basically this movie was anti-union, but tried to act like it wasn't. It also didn't present the best face on legitimate reasons why some folks in the neighborhoods didn't like the attempted expansion of the Harlem Success Academies. I don't know, maybe there WERE no good reasons against except the unions protecting their own and reverse racism of people in the neighborhood being against largely white-run schools educating mostly black students.
Whatever. It was good viewing if you are at all interested in the subject, and was also good on a human interest level. You feel for the kids that get left out at the end.
