Amazon Cloud Drive/Cloud Player
« on: March 29, 2011, 08:33:51 AM »

Just saw the announcement on Amazon's home page today.  I've got to admit I'm interested.  I'm going to play with it... anybody else?

It seems intriguing. I'll be playing with it later in the week when I get some free time to screw around with it.
Word on the street is that they'll accept mp3s from just about everywhere (with the exception of the ones with DRM restrictions) which is pretty cool. It seems simple enough, which I am sure some people will bitch about, and not having to download any stupid piece of software makes me a happy camper.

The UI is very simplistic, they'll need to improve it in order to sway the ipod crowd, but also not go overboard.  It doesn't even seem to have playlist support.  You also can't copy in folders of music, you have to create the folder on your cloud drive and then copy the contents of your existing folder to the new folder, not a huge deal, but annoying.

Right off the bat I'm having issues with the android app not "seeing" the files that I uploaded to my cloud drive.  It says to sign out and back in but that's not doing anything.  I'll give it a little bit and see what happens later.

I also find that I feel like a tool typing the words "cloud drive"....

I think this is a legit hurdle for a lot of us.

Finally got it to work on my Droid.  Turns out that you actually have to login to the web app once on your PC and accept the terms and conditions before the android app will recognize the contents of your drive.  Seems they could have done a better job with that... I had no real intentions of using it on my PC here at work, more than likely it'll be blocked within a week so there was no need to even try it.

I'll have to see how it goes in the car or something but so far the streaming is sketchy.  It's buffering and skipping like crazy here in the office.  You can download the tunes first and then play them which will alleviate the streaming issues but if I wanted to put the files physically on my device there are already a thousand other ways to go about that.  Maybe the streaming is just slow from the over abundance of first time users playing with it on the first day.

So far I'm impressed with the concept far more than the implementation.

Google has followed suit: google.music.com

I've requested an invite.  I didn't really care for the Amazon service... too clunky.

Shouldn't that be music.google.com?

I guess if you want to get all correct about it.

Got my invite today... going to play around with it a bit.  Not at all as clunky as the Amazon service so far.  You have to upload using a desktop client that I cannot download here at work so I couldn't upload anything yet.  The android app was far easier to get and setup than the amazon version.  It's a lot of free storage, I'm pretty stoked about that.
