I always knew it was going to be close. It just didn't break the way I thought it would. I didn't see Reading playing this well. West Ham went through that weird spell where they kept drawing but I knew they were going to be tough.
You can look at it like Saints were way up and then choked it. Or you can look at it like Saints got lucky and then that luck balanced out. They stole one at Leeds and got the calls against Millwall. They have not really played badly except against Reading. Middlesborough was a shitty ref and a great free kick but was always going to be a tough match. Portsmouth drew on two incredible goals; that was kind of flukey.
I think the best realistic position I would have put Saints in is where they are now with a game they should win against Coventry to clinch. This is by far the easiest game they have had in their last dozen. Home game with huge support against a bad team they have beaten three times and is even worse now that they sold their good striker and has nothing to play for and has some serious injury problems as well.
Not saying that the Saints couldn't lose it. But if they do, THIS will be the choke. It won't be the games in the run-in they regret (except Reading), it'll be this one. Winning earlier would have been a bonus, and it's a shame that they almost got it but in the end, they still got what they needed to done.
