So We've had 3 Roku's for over a year now, mostly used for Netflix, Pandora, and Crackle ...
New house (cheaper house) and a new movie room with a bigger TV and our first Bluray player with streaming services built in. I pay for the 30MB cable connection due to other things I use bandwidth for, which means movie streaming is generally fast and painless.
I have comments ...
- Netflix streaming seems to be rapidly declining in value.
- Netflix disc service is starting to become a questionable value as well. Was thinking if upgrading to the blueray service but have since discovered Vudu...
- Our Bluray player came not only with Netflix and Pandora but also a Vudu, which looks to be a damn fine service, especially the HDX rentals. Really the only thing missing that we use is Crackle for the occasional free (with commercials) movie.
- I also upped our cable subscription from lifeline (yea, we never watch TV) to HD DVR so I could compare availability, quality, etc.
Cable will be downgraded. I now have over 100 channels, some in HD, of crap. I just can't stand TV and on the channels I want to watch nothing is on when I can watch, I can't be bothered to spend time setting up the DVR to record shows, and the On Demand selection is complete crap. This is Insight cable, NKY. The only On Demand show I found worth watching was Lenny Kravitz live somewhere in England, and the sound recording was sub par.
Roku seems less and less like a good idea. Yea, it has Crackle, but that's the least used service for us. Good for movies on Netflix IF they have it, but frankly the Netflix interface on the Blueray player is better than Roku, so why not buy a player with Netflix built in?
Finally, renting or buying digital copies of movies. How many do we watch versus how many would we get via the Netflix disc subscription ... and then, can we get those in HD quality?
So anyone else pondering these questions? Any opinions?
