I have the Comix application for my iPad so I buy a couple comics now and again but for the most part, they're just way too expensive.

Yeah, that was a part of the reason I let the hobby go.  Just about every (physical) issue got to be $3.99+.

I'm still a nerd and go to the comic book shop every week.  I usually go to Queen City comics on Montgomery, because it isn't to far out of the way for me coming home from work.  I have tried comics on the computer and tablet and it just isn't the same for me.

I have to second both Irredeemable and Incorruptible.  They are both really good and worth picking up when they end.  DMZ is another one that ended recently that was really good (really, anything by Brian Wood is worth picking up).  You may not like Marvel, but you should give X-Factor a shot.  It is written by Peter A David and is basically a noir comic written as a mutant comic.  He keeps it mostly out of the main mutant storylines and has an incredible sense of humour to add to the book.  He's another writer that is just really solid and is always good and I will pick up most things I see his name on. You should also definitely check out the Secret Six and Birds of Prey trades.  They are by Gail Simone and are just incredibly written books.  Secret Six completely revitalized interest in some of the second string DC villains (including Bane) and made them relevant again. The last thing you should absolutely check out Is Strangers in Paradise by  Terry Moore.  It ran from the mid-90 and ended in 2007, and is a must read.  It is some of the best characterization in a book I have ever read.  No superhero, just 2 people and the messed up story of their lives.

I'm sure there is more, but that is all I can think of that are really incredibly off the top of my head.

that app allows me to read avengers #1, x-men #1, daredevil #1....stuff none of us could ever afford. for that, i like it.

as for newer stuff, i really haven't pursued much....but anything written by ed brubaker seems to get really good reviews (most recently, criminal), so i am not going to be much help in that regard. i don't really get newer releases.
what could help you though is just going to a store and lay it out to whoever is working what you have told us here....because comic dudes LOVE to steer you in a direction, and despite being rabidly opinionated, most are great guys.

as for stores, i pretty much (literally) live between up, up, and away (cheviot, overpriced but incredibly CLEAN and organized. owner, kendall, is pretty serious and a little unapproachable) and rockin' rooster (covedale, so-so, small store that thrives on gaming. nice guys).

my favorites though are queen city comics by everybody's records (great collection of old and new, very helpful owner, two decent-sized rooms) and maverick's in finneytown. be warned....maverick's in finneytown is CRAZY. they do a lot of sports cards also and the place is a WRECK. you have to ask to find stuff, everything is in piles but the guy is super nice. i love it BECAUSE it's total chaos; it reminds me of the store i grew up going to, but i have been there trying to get comics out of a box jammed so tight that the box literally exploded and comics cascaded out everywhere! the owner, marvin, just laughed and taped up the box.

so, best overall would be queen city comics. the one on RT4 is ok, but the one on montegomery is better. outside of those, you are going to florence comic book world and beyond...

if i think of other newer things, i'll put them here, but like i said, i sniff around for '60's- '80's. i'm going to a guy's house monday who is apparently sitting on thousands of old titles. i think he has researched them quite a bit though so i may leave without any real steals.

Thanks for the info, guys.

Forgot about Rockin' Rooster.  That's the old CBW guys, right?

Kind of hard to believe how many years it has been since I first started going to that old Comic Book World in Cheviot (now Up Up & Away).  And you're right, it always has been super clean.  Plus it has that awesome art on the side of the building.  Mildly funny story, I used to always go on Saturdays, which back then was the height of the Pokemon/Yu-Gi-Oh era.  So I guess Saturday afternoons were the TCG tournament days, and the store would be jam packed with tables of people playing, and the store isn't even that big.  So one day I was making my rounds along the wall looking at the new comics, I turn around and this guy, probably late teens/early 20s at one of the tables immediately says "this isn't some library" in relation to me reading a comic off the shelf.  I somehow immediately responded, in a playful manner, "it isn't a playground either."  I still think about that sometimes.

I used to hit Comic Book World in Florence once a week.  Those places don't really cater to the likes of me (I'm a Carl Barks/Don Rosa fan, and those inspired by them so the stuff I read is therefore "kid's stuff").  Julie was getting the Dark Tower comics for a while and we had to trek way out of our way to Kettering to find anything "local".  I've had a desire lately to read some older stuff like old Fantastic 4, GI Joe (throwback to my childhood). I don't have the budget to feed the exorbitant costs of a hobby like that so "acquiring" them is the only way I'm going to read them, period.

i'm going to a guy's house monday who is apparently sitting on thousands of old titles. i think he has researched them quite a bit though so i may leave without any real steals.

went.

i've been in contact with some guy my coworker goes to church with after hearing he was sitting on a huge comic collection he wanted to thin out.
after several emails, it was looking more and more dismal- i was not going to have that once-in-a-lifetime find. it seemed like the guy wanted to know specifically what issues i was interested in and then wanted to research in advance everything i was looking for. this led me to believe he didn't know their value.

with that in mind, my initial list included a lot of general x-men, daredevil, avengers runs, etc. but also mixed in some doozies (hulk 181, daredevil 168) in those runs. the guy was starting to research more and more, so i made what i THOUGHT was a genius move and said i'd just come out before he put too much effort into what he had. after all, i was under the impression he inherited many of them. but, when i went today, he had only brought out a few boxes of things i had mentioned for me to browse and i didn't get to the mother lode. i feel like i'm in a chess match and maybe he DOES know!......he could have laid out all doubles or something.....or i'm  reading too much into all of it.
i wasn't exactly trying to rip him off, but i was definitely in some morally ambiguous area.....if he wanted them gone, i would take them away!

despite all of that, it was well worth it, i may have not bagged the first appearance of elektra, but i picked up 45 comics for a $1 each, including some 12cent avengers, daredevils, secret wars stuff i've been looking for, including the debut of spidey's black suit...ALL well under any store's cost. in fact, those avengers are probably $8- $20 a piece, based on their condition (most are fine/very fine). so i'm calling it a good day.

i passed on a bunch of 12 cent submariners (not into him) i could have probably have flipped to cover my gas, but perhaps there will be a follow up trip.

many are double bagged so you can't see all here, but this is an idea.....some great bronze age avengers battles that i would assume raise in value with the movie doing so well. but, as i may have mentioned before, i don't buy these as some money-making scheme. i LIKE them and they are a steal at this price. if they increase in value, great.

top photo sucks, sorry.

I've heard a lot of good things, as well as a few wary comments. Apparently there are some extremes that are getting different reactions.

That Batwoman book, by the way, was great. I highly recommend it.

You should definitely read it.  It is one of those history changing books.  Actually, almost all of Alan Moore Batman stuff is like that (with the exception of Dark Knight Strikes Again, which I hated).

thanks.

this might open the door for a moral debate......

i have been asking a few people so i will ask here also: say this guy has hulk 181, and according to him, he might. it is the first full issue appearance of WOLVERINE and a highly sought after book. in shitty, falling apart condition people will pay $100 bucks for it. in mint condition it goes for thousands. therefore, any middle-of-the-road copy goes for anywhere between $500-$1,200. i see it on ebay regularly.
let's say this guy has that book and does not know it's value and offers it to me for $1 like the other back issues. what would you do?

do you say screw him, he has had the opportunity to research this, or do you offer him something more to ease your guilt? do you even say anything? i am not saying this will happen, but it MIGHT. a few of my friends have given me their thoughts. anyone here have an opinion on the matter?

If he offers it to you, I say there is no problem in taking it. Yes, it may be "more right" to say something to him, but if he is the one naming a price, I see no issue with it (especially since he has shown he has done some research into some of the books).

Now if you offer him a dollar knowing what it is worth, hoping to basically get a steal from someone who doesn't know what it is worth, then it's a total dick move.

interesting distinction, letting him determine price, and a good point.

I agree. If he sets the price, and you're willing to pay it, no problem.

What does he want? A dollar? I'll offer him two. ;)
