Political Discussion?
« on: November 26, 2011, 11:04:40 PM »

Please vote. A quote from another thread that I made:

"Well, in the "About" section out on the zine, it states clearly that we don't discuss politics or religion. However, the zine and boards are pretty segregated. If folks feel like we should stick with the integrity of Randomville, the name, then no, I'd say we shouldn't add a thread like that.

Myself, I don't visit the boards much and I would extremely, rarely visit that thread if there was one. I don't really care if we have one or not, and if folks want to chat about that stuff, I'm cool with it. Just like any other thread/discussion: if things get too out of control where multiple complaints come in, we'll look into resolving the issue.

We can set up a poll and go with a majority vote of having one or not. That's pretty much how we've always rolled around here: Majority rule."

Majority rule."

Frederic Bastiat once said that the rule of the majority would be more tyrannical than that of any king or emperor.

I probably would not get involved in a political section, but it can always be removed if things got out of hand.

i respect what you folks at randomville have here and it must seem like a tsunami of opinionated assbags has recently hit your shores. while that is kind of true, don't feel too intimidated. we're all nice and there was plenty of self-policing at WOXY as well. most people stayed out of the political forum because they really didn't care, and those that were in that forum were also music fans, so there WERE common interests. in fact, it was usually libertarians arguing with liberals or extreme liberals.
people did not come to WOXY to talk politics. it was just there. for those reasons i voted yes, with the caveat that it really doesn't even need to be a whole forum...just a THREAD. and if it repeatedly taints the this whole culture here.....nix it.

politics suck but they are are part of life.

2 cents.

I participated in my share of CE/P threads, though I preferred the CE element than straight political ones.

I think of it like any other subject. There are some topics (gaming, graphic novels) that don't interest me, and I will thus stay out of threads (or whole fora) devoted to them. I never understood the complaints over there that simply having the threads (even if the complainant never ventured there) was somehow damaging the community.

It wasn't damaging the community on the woxy boards.  Politics or the talk of politics make some people uncomfortable.  I get that.  Sometimes topics got heated and you read something that somebody wrote, and it rubs you the wrong way.  I'm as guilty of that as anyone.

I would love to see more people on these message boards (and possibly, contributing to the 'zine if they felt like it).  If a P/CE forum is an answer to that, I'm all for it.  I can only think of a few incidents where things got so overblown, moderators had to step in and ban people (temporarily or not) on the woxy boards.  I believe that those incidents are unlikely to happen here for a few reasons:  1) We are not the woxy boards.  2) People are more than capable of policing themselves.  3)  This is a smaller community of folks who have personal ties outside the boards, for the most part.  I think people are more likely then to not say things in anger and flame a situation higher.  The likelyhood of anonymous schmoes coming in here and fouling up the place because they can isn't going to happen here because we're smaller.  (Ads for Viagra aside)

Thankfully, there's a solution that benefits all:   If you don't like the idea of a CE/P forum, don't read it or post in it.  Like Predot said, there are forums that don't interest people on here already.  I don't see any discussion to remove those forums on here because they're unliked.

I agree with most of what's been posted allready on this. If you don't like reading about/getting involved with it, stay out of the thread. But it's nice having the opportunity to read/post if you feel so inclined. Hence, I voted "yes".

Yeah, I agree with most of what has been said. I didn't participate too much on CE/P on WOXY.com, because talking politics on the internet tends to stress me out. But if people want a place to do it, I think it's okay.

If you make it its own forum I can minimize it and never have to see it.

I voted "I don't care" but I still think a "random political thoughts" thread is the answer.
