Obama was only offering blankets to Ukraine, he was a pussy on Ukraine aid.  Trump was going to send in lethal aid and the lady diplomat that he kicked out was gangbusters FOR IT.  Trump is a fucking moron daytime, step back and look at what he's doing.  He got rid of the diplomat because she was an honest broker and our corrupt real estate tycoon cannot afford honest brokers.

EVERY PERSON WHO DEALS WITH OR WORKS WITH TRUMP IS EVENTUALLY HIS ENEMY.   Why is that?

Who gives a rats ass what Joe Biden did, that's a smokescreen.

I mean, he did it.  Anyone who thinks otherwise is fooling themselves.

But the fatal flaw in the impeachment charge is that if Trump actually believes that investigating Biden was in the best interest of the country, you can't really say he abused his powers.  And it's totally believable.  Because even if you hate Trump, can you honestly say he doesn't believe in conspiracy theories, or that in his own mind as God-emperor of the United States that any enemy of his is the enemy of the people?

The "I'm not personally targeting anyone, I'm just a totally crazy asshole" defense is a pretty good legal tactic.  In fact, the crazier and more of an asshole you are, the better it works.  It's a solid shield against impeachment, but it brings up the question of why anyone would want a totally crazy asshole to be the President.

The answer of course, is that Trump voters are themselves totally crazy assholes.  They believe in whatever ridiculous conspiracy theories that Fox, or QAnon or whoever wants to throw out there, just like Trump himself does.

But the Democrats can only do what they can do.  In a normal situation, effectively pointing out that the leader of the US is either diabolically corrupt or insane should be a win-win.

The US is not coming back from this, dude.  I'm telling you.  It's one thing to cheat to win, it's another to cheat and feel like you're the one actually being cheated.  What kind of work ethic do we have as a nation, when Trump is lauded for his horrible business practices, and people believe that being a US citizen entitles them to jobs, and if we can't compete with countries on trade, we just ban their shit-- and we feel totally self-righteous about this?

You can't just take like, ten or fifteen years off as the leader of the free world and then expect to gain your status back.

Nothing has changed.  Trump will be gone someday, our democracy will benefit, and even by doing nothing we will remain leader.  Honestly all we have to do is sit and wait, eventually people will be reminded that for all our faults we actually are a hell of a lot better than the alternative.

I think you minimize the centuries old conflicts that continue to bubble to the surface from time to time in the 'old world' if you will.  Remember, the last time we took time off the world went to war.  People love to think there is some new awakening that will somehow prevent this from happening again but there's no such thing.  Show me a Europe that actually acts like a country and can defend itself without our help, and money, and I might believe you.

What is the "alternative?"

I find the whole neocon-ish us vs them, US Democracy vs Socialism, cold war attitude rather old-fashioned.  And it's always coupled with the ridiculous idea of American Exceptionalism, it's a big part of the problem.

As a culture or society, you're either moving forward or you're not.  That's kind of the bottom line.  It doesn't matter what other countries are doing, because it's not a zero-sum competitive game.  If you suck, you suck.  I would agree that the UK and quite a bit of Europe is sucking at least as hard as we are right now, but that just means we all go down.  If Trump is the leader of the free world, there really is no leader of the free world.

The old-fashioned ways of measuring power are no longer useful.  More countries are developing nukes, and if they have nukes then it cancels out our gigantic military.  Economically, are any of the big "US" corporations really American?  They're just profiteering multinationals.  Not that I'm crapping about the free market.  Just pointing out that they don't give a fuck.  They'll go wherever the money is.  They already have.  They really don't exist American companies in any sort of way.

The idea that there's a crown that as long as we have it we'll be fine, and that some other country has to wrest that crown away from us is silly.  If your government can't run shit, and your people are fucking lazy, racist, idiots, your country will fail.  What's wrong with the US is a domestic problem, not an international one. It doesn't matter what's happening in other places.  It just matters that what is happening here is bad, and it will take us a long time to recover already, and I don't think we've hit rock bottom.

Your US view has been corrupted by your beltway bias and the false belief that what actually happens can be predicted in advance.  You almost sound like the republicans who claim there was no quid pro quo because Trump didn't admit to it.  Perverse.  These racist idiots who voted for Trump because they thought it was a good idea are not going to admit they made a mistake.  Instead they will fade away, not vote, or vote differently without telling anyone.  There will be no news story that says, THIS JUST IN: We interviewed John Q Public and he admitted to being a racist fool and will vote for a democrat in the next election.

No matter how much we want that to happen.

It's not going to happen because those people are not going to change their mind.

Whether they vote or not makes no difference.  Our shitty President and  current political situation are the symptom and not the cause.  Trump didn't hijack the party.  This has been building for at least 20 years.  Maybe the Dems will get better turnout and/or 2% of the country changes it's mind.  But in large scheme of things, that's not much of a change and is not going to fix what ails the country.

In the end, it's not a problem with the Republicans or the Democrats.  It's a problem with the people.

I disagree, and I think it's more of that bias again, thinking you know how the rest of the country feels.  (that sounds like I'm yelling, I'm not, I'm imploring).

Let's take my Northern KY tea party MAGA area.  Boone County KY, the only NKY county where Bevin still won.  We have the airport, but it's run by Kenton because the area was so backwoods it couldn't do it.

6 months ago, MAGA sings in yards, Don't Tread On Me flags here and there, pickup trucks with 'merican flags and MAGA slogans seen regularly.  Now, no such thing, vanished.

The national news talked about how voter turnout was high in Kentucky, and it was, but how about in Northern Kentucky, Trump land?

Boone County (Cincinnati, red)

2019 38.4% (governor)
2018 40.83% (congressional)
2016 59% (presidential)

Jefferson (Louisville, blue)

2019 45.7% (governor)
2018 48.73% (congressional)
2016 61% (presidential)

Look at the drop in Boone County.  From a high of 59% to a new low of 38% which, while high for an 'off year' election was one of the worst in the state.  The yahoos stayed home.  In our two party system if you don't like the candidate you tend to stay home rather than vote.    Boone County turnout dropped 20% from 2016 while Jefferson, who almost always voted for the democrat, only dropped 15%.   This is what I'm talking about, though it's hard to compare apples to apples when it comes to elections.  The 2015 turnout was all over the place, mainly because Trump wasn't the candidate yet and Bevin was running on Tea Party issues.

Yeah, but my point is less about politics.  I think Trump could lose the election, but it still won't fix what is wrong with this country.

Politically, I agree with you.  But I think what will hurt Trump is that he's a boob.  The wall has not been built, and Mexico is not paying for it.  Healthcare is still in limbo.  They still believe in all those fool policies, but there's people on the right thinking 'Hey, Trump hasn't really done much."

Those people becoming disillusioned enough to the the point where maybe they won't vote for Trump, or maybe even vote Democrat still doesn't fix the problem.  They're still going to be anti-government, want handouts, and are convinced the government sucks, and that immigrants are taking their jobs. If Trump loses, they'll just turn on Biden or whoever.

I mean, I guess it's pretty dickish but what I'm saying is that Kentucky is filled with idiots, regardless of who they vote for.  The boomer generation will die.  Poor people will die because the GOP is screwing them over way more than the Dems ever did.  The whole reason Trump is popular is because those people feel like their backs are against the wall, and we are trying to destroy their "culture."  Which is true.  I am 100% trying to destroy their backwards asses.

It's hard to imagine the GOP lasting beyond Trump's second term if he wins based on their demographics.  At that point maybe we can move forward as a country again, but I think the damage has already been done.

I don't know what planet you're living on.  I live in rural Ohio (just outside of Dayton) and have family in Northern Kentucky and I don't know a single Trumper that isn't still 100% Trump.  If nothing else they've doubled down based on the impeachment attempt.  There are Trump 2020 (and some 2024) flags everywhere here.  What ZK said about these fools feeling threatened is 100% true.  One of Julie's brother in laws will not let his kids go to the better school district in the area, even though his kids are learning nothing in their current school, because there are too many black kids.  And he doesn't care if they learn anything anyway, they can labor until into their 80s just the same as he will.  These people do not want to relinquish one centilia of their way of life, and if that means voting for Trump by God it's better than letting us snowflakes make any progress.

i heard someone had some had an anecdote.  the chimney man came over the day to unclog our flue of stink bugs.  we got real cordial like and chatted for a half hour or so after the exhumation.  the two of us, with our beards, kids two, relatively the same age, white... people see me and just assume i'm politically liberal.  he thought he had a sympathetic audience.  i asked him where his outfit was out of, he said mariemont.  he then told me of all the blond haired blue eyed nazi children that inhabit his neck of the woods and how fucking terrible trump is.  bummer

Why would anyone assume a white guy is liberal?  White guys are literally the only demographic  that is not liberal.
