The first 20 minutes are barely funny at all.  And the scenes with the 2 store clerks are almost all unnecessary... could've lost 20-30 minutes easily and not adversely affected the film.  I took a lot from it, and enjoyed it, but it really could've been a lot better.  The interactions with their kids resonated the most, but approaching 40 myself (in 3 years), this didn't hit home as much as I'd expected, largely because I don't feel bad for those suffering through a mid-life crisis that is largely of its own making.  But I suppose if you hit the 2-3 easy fixes early on, it wouldn't make for much of a movie.

BAM!  I hit 100.  Probably won't hit 100 next year, since I am now trying to finally make my way through HBO's THE WIRE... I am early into Season 2, so lots to still go there.

Re: 50 Movies in 2012
« Reply #708 on: January 04, 2013, 12:32:07 AM »

Thanks to Foursquare's filters for my history of check-ins, plus the Netflix history (which was mostly TV shows in 2012), I was able to build my list. I actually made it to 50 - even though I had a 2 month gap in the fall!

1. 1/1 - Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 (Crossroads 20) 6 of 10 - One more to go...
2. 1/1 - We Bought a Zoo (Crossroads 20) 7 of 10 - surprisingly pleasent movie
3. 1/2 - Melancholia (Galaxy) 6 of 10 - While I didn't hate it, it wasn't my favorite of the year
4. 1/2 - The Adventures of Tintin 3D (Marbles IMAX) 7 of 10 - Had much higher expections, so somewhat disappointed
5. 1/9 - Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Rialto) 8 of 10 - yes, you have to pay attention, but it's worth it
6. 1/19 - War Horse (Crossroads 20) 7 of 10 - The stage performance in London is still 100 times better
7. 1/26 - Shame (Galaxy) 6 of 10 - Michael Fassbender, do I need to say more?
8. 1/29 - No Strings Attached (Netflix) 5 of 10 - I don't remember anything about this good or bad, so a middle of the road ranking
9. 2/3 - A Dangerous Method (Galaxy) 7 of 10 - Michael Fassbender, again!
10. 2/8 - The Artist (Rialto) 8 of 10 - I liked it and didn't mind it winning Best Picture
11. 2/9 - The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Crossroads 20) 7 of 10 - Having not read the book or having seen the original version, I enjoyed it. Partially predicted the villain.
12. 2/10 - 2012 Oscar Shorts Live Action (Galaxy) various - great to see these before the Oscars. My favorite (with Ciarαn Hinds) ended up getting the Oscar
13. 2/13 - Albert Nobbs (Galaxy) 6 of 10 - Okay.
14. 2/24 - 2012 Oscar Shorts: Animated (Galaxy) various - again, my favorite won the Oscar
15. 2/25 - Rango (Redbox) 7 of 10 - I try to watch all the potential Oscar winners before the ceremony. With this afternoon viewing I managed to do so with just hours left. It was actually the only nominated Animated Feature that I saw.
16. 2/27 - Wanderlust (North Hills 14) 7 of 10 - Paul Rudd! I'm still hoping for a Wet, Hot American Summer sequel.
17. 3/5 - The Lorax 3D (Marbles IMAX) 6 of 10 - Acceptable adaptation of a Doctor Seuss book that I had as a magazine clipping as a child.
18. 3/9 - Valentine's Day (DVR) 4 of 10 - Remember only that I was slightly annoyed by this, but nothing else about it. Did I really watch it?
19. 3/11 - Friends with Kids (Rialto) 8 of 10 - Great ensemble movie
20. 3/14 - John Carter (Mayfair) 7 of 10 - This really needed a better marketing team and the original title
21. 3/15 - Mystery Train (Netflix) 7 of 10 - Fun little comedy
22. 3/29 - The Hunger Games (Marbles IMAX) 8 of 10 - Other that the lack of explanation about the starvation, a good adaptation of an awesome book
23. 4/17 - The Cabin in the Woods (Crossroads 20) 7 of 10 - Oh, Joss, what a take on horror movies!
24. 4/19 - Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (Rialto) 7 of 10 - Ewan McGregor!
25. 5/6 - The Avengers (Marbles IMAX) 8 of 10 - Joss does it again. They managed to pull all the threads together into a coherent movie. Yay!
26. 6/2 - My Girlfriend's Boyfriend (Netflix) 5 of 10 - Again, don't remember anything about this 6 months later, so a middle of the road rating
27. 6/5 - The Hurt Locker (Netflix) 9 of 10 - Did it really take me over a year to see this? Definitely worthy of Best Picture.
28. 6/? - Hysteria (Galaxy) 7 of 10 - nice to see Rupert Everett in a supporting role. I haven't seen him in much lately.
29. 6/24 - Brave (Crossroads 20) 7 of 10 - I wanted to like this so much more.
30. 6/28 - The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (Rialto) 7 of 10 - much better than I was expecting from the trailers
31. 6/30 - Magic Mike (Crossroads 20) 6 of 10 - Needed more dance routines from the supporting characters
32. 6/30 - Men in Black III (Crossroads 20) 6 of 10 - Worth seeing Josh Brolin being Tommy Lee Jones
33. 6/30 - Prometheus (Crossroads 20) 6 of 10 - I've never seen Alien, Aliens, or Aliens 3. Still love Michael Fassbender.
34. 7/8 - The Decoy Bride (Netflix) 6 of 10 - Cute romcom with David Tennant
35. 7/9 - Bernie (Colony) 7 of 10 - Jack Black, Shirley McClain, and Matthew McConaughey! Still amazed it was based on a true story.
36. 7/13 - Moonrise Kingdom (Rialto) 9 of 10 - I need to see this one again. Just great.
37. 7/31 - Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (Netflix) 5 of 10 - My visiting niece wanted a movie with aliens.
38. 8/1 - Mac and Me (Netflix) 2 of 10 - Wow, this was bad. My niece wanted another movie about an alien. Since I don't have ET, we went with this version.
39. 8/3 - Strawberry Shortcake: Sweet Dreams (Netflix) n/a - My niece moved on from aliens to a movie based on characters her mother, my youngest sister, liked as a child. I feel old.
40. 8/16 - Beasts of the Southern Wild (Colony) 6 of 10 - it may be sacrilege, but I just didn't love this as much as some of my other friends did
41. 8/16 - Ruby Sparks (Colony) 7 of 10 - Interesting premise - and conclusion
42. 8/18 - The Dark Knight Rises (Marbles IMAX) 7 of 10 - Enjoyed Anne's take on Catwoman
43. 8/28 - Safety Not Guaranteed (Rialto) 7 of 10 - Pleasantly surprised by the ending
44. 8/31 - The Campaign (Crossroads 20) 7 of 10 - Much better than watch political convention coverage. I just don't understand why a movie set in North Carolina had to be filmed in Lousiana, when we have a perfectly welcoming film industry. Maybe because it wasn't too flattering of NC. ;D

Then the fall TV season started, and I became tethered to my DVR (when I wasn't at concerts). Luckily I front loaded my movie watching during the year.

45. 11/8 - Seven Psychopaths (Colony) 8 of 10 - Had high expectations based on other board members' reviews, and I wasn't disappointed.
46. 11/11 - Arbitrage (Galaxy - The last day for the theater, sniff) 6 of 10 - Enjoyable, but I saw most of the movie in the trailers
47. 11/19 - Argo (Providence 14) 9 of 10 - I've loved Ben Affleck for years (I pretend Jennifer Garner is an alternate universe version of me - we're the same age and were both in the high school band, so that makes sense, right?). He did a great job directing and the supporting cast was really good.
48. 11/26 - The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 (Crossroads 20) 6 of 10 - It's finally finished!
49. 12/3 - Skyfall (Marbles IMAX) 8 of 10 - Loved that Judy Dench got more screen time.
50. 12/13 - The Sessions (Colony) 6 of 10 - John Hawkes was great, but the movie was simply okay.
51. 12/13 - The Perks of Being a Wallflower (Colony) 9 of 10 - Fabulous soundtrack, too, even if they didn't know Heroes.
52. 12/17 - Life of Pi 3D (Crossroads 20) 8 of 10 - Absolutely beautiful movie.
53. 12/21 - A Royal Affair (Crossroads 20) 7 of 10 - I now have a better understanding of Danish history from 1766 to 1775, which definitely made for a good movie.
54. 12/30 - Silver Linings Playbook (Rialto) 9 of 10 - I love Bradley Cooper with short hair and Jennifer Lawrence continues to amaze.
55. 12/31 - Hangover 2 (DVR) 8 of 10 - I love Bradley Cooper with longer hair. Still can't believe they went some of the places they did, but I still laughed.

Still lots to see before the Oscars - Lincoln, Les Mis, Zero Dark Thirty - plus The Hobbit. I also have Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present sitting on my DVR waiting to be watched.

I know! I want to give it my undivided attention, as I'm really bad at being on the computer while watching TV at home. Maybe one night next week, as I've finally caught up on all the TV I recorded during the fall (my DVR has gone from 10% free space to 67% free space).

Ella, I think you can add these to your list, too:
(from my list)
1. The Princess Bride-- Still holds up quite well, if anything, I think it's better than when I first saw it. Wesley!!!
2. No Strings Attached- Ashton Kutcher/Natalie Portman. I liked him better than her, which is weird. AK should stick to rom-coms, he does them well, even if he's a tool in the real world.
3. The Truth about Cats and Dogs-- hmmm, nostalgically cute, but it really isn't a good movie when you get down to it. Garofalo is adorable, and Uma is such a newbie in this one.

I watched these all on Jan 1 last year, and you were with me! :)

I only count new movies - so no Princess Bride. And I left before you watched the Truth about Cats and Dogs. No Strings Attached was there at #8, as it wasn't working when we tried streaming. (Yes, I remember these details a year later. Too bad I can't remember people's names!)

I finally bit the Netflix bullet and I find that I'm definitely watching more TV shows than movies so far.

That's what left me scrambling to watch 6 movies in two days to meet 50 by the end of the year. I spent most of my tube time watching Buffy, Angel, Louis C.K., Twilight Zone, and My Little Pony.  Looking forward to starting on West Wing very soon.
