7. Freshii - Downtown Cincinnati

I'd really like to try that.

I'll have to keep this place in mind. I don't eat out very often and when I do, I usually either go to Lucy Blue for a couple of slices of pizza or to the Juice place on Vine St because the food their is fairly healthy. I am always craving a salad. Had no idea this place was even here. I'll try to look for it on my bus ride out of town this afternoon so I know where I am going. ;)

1. Echo Cafe - Hyde Park (Cincinnati)
2. Sky Galley, Lunken Airfield, East End (Cincinnati)
3. The Gardens of Park Hills - Park Hills, KY.
4. Moerlein Lager House - The Banks (Cincinnati)
5. Mayberry - Over-the-Rhine
6. Strong's Brick Oven Pizza - Newport, KY
7. Freshii - Downtown Cincinnati
8. Currito - Downtown Cincinnati

Locally-based Currito's tagline is "Burritos without borders." Normally when one thinks of burritos, the term conjures up Mexican-style fixin's like beans, rice and cheese. You can get that at Currito, but you can also get burritos made with any number of other ethnic foodstuffs, like Asian (teriyaki-style with rice, caramelized onions, and veggies, and Bangkok style with peanut sauce and Asian slaw), Cajun (black beans, roasted corn salsa, rice) and Mediterranean (hummus, brown rice, tomatoes and feta).

The burritos come in two sizes - small (10" tortilla) and regular (12" tortilla) - or do away with the wrap completely and have it in a bowl. The restaurant also offers salads, dessert burritos (nutella or peanut butter & jelly) and a nice selection of healthy smoothies.

I had the "summer burrito," stuffed with black beans, mango salsa, and cilantro-lime rice ($6.49). I added tofu and guacamole for a little extra. It was very good, and I'm glad I opted for the small, because the large would have been way too much. They list all the nutritional and caloric content of their menu items on their website, which is a nice plus.

It's in the same building as J.Gumbos, across from the Subway by Fountain News.

Oh great, thanks! That currito place also sounds good.

Off-topic, but it always makes me happy that Fountain News is still hanging on. That and the Ohio Bookstore are about the only things downtown remaining in somewhat the same form as they were during my 1980s adolescence.

1. DiBella's - Still the best subs in C-bus.
2. Winking Lizard (Bethel Rd.) - The beer selection alone is worth the trip... the fact that I like the food and the staff know me and are good is just icing on the cake.
3. Papaya Street Grill (Dublin) - Oh my. I'll have to wholeheartedly agree with Heg on this place. I will be returning there often. I had the green curry, spiced to medium, and it was one of the best green curries I've ever had. Now I want to try everything else on the menu. It's well-worth the trip to the obscure strip mall. Oh, and Heg, anytime you want to go again, let me know and I'll meet you.
4. Northstar Cafe (Beechwold) - I've driven by here a million times and have never stopped. I had the Thai burrito which was pretty tasty... although a little light on the Thai flavors. However, the star (for me) was the fresh ginger ale. I could have had 5 more glasses of this stuff, it was like a ginger mojito without the booze. Spicy, sweet, and refreshing.
5. Claddagh (Polaris) - I haven't been here in nearly 3 years so it counts as new, right? I had the Jameson burger which was super tasty and very messy. Service was good and friendly... and it didn't hurt that I sat next to an adorable British ex-pat.  ;D
6. Heirloom (OSU) - I had the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich. It was good, the homemade sauce was the highlight of the  sandwich. At 8.25, it was a bit price-y but I'd eat it again.
7. El Vaquero - It was gorgeous and they have a patio. Oh and half price margaritas.  ;D
8. Firstwatch (Dublin) - Bacon and cheddar pancakes. They were awesome. This was a great brunch.
9. Ditka's (Chicago, Ill.) - We had a (very) late lunch here. It was great, we got seated right away and the server was awesome. I have the "kick ass" Kobe burger (Kobe beef patty, brie, balsamic-y sauce) which was incredible.
10. Billy Goat (Chicago, Ill.) - A classic dive. So glad we were able to wander over and have burgers and beer here. Cheap, tasty, perfect drunk food.
11. Geno's East (Chicago, Ill.) - Deep dish pizza time! Yet another late lunch... we stuff ourselves silly and all had leftovers (mine are sadly still in Chicago).
12. 312 Chicago (Chicago, Ill.) - An Italian place. A fancy-pants Italian place. Holy cow was this good. I had the beef tenderloin (medium rare) which was perfect. I mean, perfect. It was served on a potato cake and dressed with sauteed mushrooms and truffle butter. 30 bucks but well, well worth the money. Also, since it was my birthday I got a free dessert of banana-chocolate bread pudding with banana-chocolate gelato... the gelato was great.
13. Bistro (Chicago, Ill.) - [I am going to double check the name.] Because what does anyone need at 4am? Why baked brie, of course! This was a great little find, the host was fantastic and the food was tasty.

[Side note: we also had drinks and guacamole in the Signature Lounge of the John Hancock building. Best view in town.. but chips and dip don't count as a meal so I'm not including it on the list.]

Did you go to the one across the street from Ed Debevics?

Not really new but tried again, Nicholson's. They have a new menu (and chef?) and partnership with Carriage Hill farms. Local and fresh food.

We started the meal with fries fried in duck fat. They were served with homemade ketchup and garlic aioli dipping sauce. The ketchup was nice, a bit sweet but the garlic aioli was lip smacking good. The fries were good but would probably skip in the future.

Mark and I both ordered the same thing. Grilled cheese sandwich with caramelized onions and tomato basil soup. The bread was so fresh, perfectly toasted, the cheese a nice mild, cheddar and the onions took it over the top. The soup was also delicious, especially when you dipped the sandwich in it.

For dessert we ordered the server's suggestion of a mango mousse on top of graham cracker crust and topped with a peach puree. Wow, so light, so flavorful, so delicious.

My only disappointment was with my hot tea. It was probably my fault but when the server brought it (it is served in a proper ceramic tea pot), she said it probably needed another minute or two. I wished I had checked it because it was probably done  (for me anyway). Even with sugar and cream, it was still a bit bitter. I would have ordered a beer but we were headed to the ballet and I wanted to stay awake. ;)

Adding another note about Freshii: Their ice machine is one of those Manitowok jobs that produces chewy ice. I absolutely LOVE chewy ice. There are so few places around town that offer it, but when I stopped in to Freshii today I discovered that they have it. I will be eating there every day just so I can carry a cup of it back to work. *happy dance*

Yep... it was a couple blocks from our hotel.

Another check in the "fuck me, yes" column for Freshii. Had the Teryaki bowl today for my first visit today and whilst it looked 'small' it was VERY tasty indeed! Will be back time and time again if all the other menu items are as good.

I may have to try this when next I go. I went on Monday and while my salad was good, it just wasn't spectacular. Not sure if it was their balsamic dressing or what, but the salad was not very exciting. I ordered the Harvest Salad because I love beets, goat cheese and cranberries but what is weird, there wasn't much flavor of anything that stood out: it wasn't balanced at all. Not throwing in the towel though because CR and MissKitty give it such high marks and there are very few places downtown that have healthy, fresh food. :)

Do you think that part of the problem is that they don't mix up the ingredients? Everything is very compartmentalized, and I found it difficult to mix everything up so that the flavors mingle.

That said, I opted for their special "Kale Effect" brown rice bowl yesterday and it was the chippity - AFTER I'd mixed it up. I started to eat it without mixing and it was very, very bland. After a hearty stir or three, it was delish.

14. Thai Orchid (C-bus) - In a sketchy strip mall north of I-270, hides a tiny gem of Thai food. They have some random Chinese dishes on the menu to distract you but ignore them... go straight for the Thai. I had the green curry pork, it was wonderful. It was spiced hot enough that if you ate too fast you paid for it. My dinner pardner had some fried red snapper dish which looked and smelled amazing.
