Random Science Musings
« on: August 29, 2012, 07:40:55 AM »

We all have those people on our Facebook friends list who post annoying, misinformed bullshit on a regular basis. Well, next time you see someone post about how Big Pharma is evil and withholding live-saving drugs from the poor or whatever, please educate them with this blog:

As someone who works in drug research (I do IT for a Clinical Research Organization), this is one of those arguments where both sides are right.  Drug research is EXPENSIVE.  And most of them don't pan out and the money is just gone.  But at the same time, drug companies do a lot of underhanded and shady things to keep making ridiculous amounts of money from the big drugs that do get approved. There is a reason a new formulation comes out right before a drug gets open to generics.  Sure, the new formulation may only be a time release formula so you only have to take it once a day instead of twice, but then they can get doctors to push that new formula instead of the new generic that is much cheaper.

Yeah, but are they sitting on the cure for cancer because they can make more money selling chemo drugs?  I don't think so.

No, they definitely aren't.  Think of the money you could make if you were the company that had the cure for cancer.  The reason you see more drugs for symptoms rather than out and out cures are those are easier to do.  If it hard to cure a disease.  You spend a lot of money and most of it is wasted on failures.  You have a much better chance of coming up with a drug that can handle some symptom of a disease.

This always seemed like the obvious conclusion on that debate to me.

I hope everyone enjoyed yesterday's blue moon. We had a cloudless night, so I was able to see it!
