Why? What did he do to you?

Well, he wasn't a very nice guy.  I think it's fair to whether he would be so hated by US conservatives (or so well-tolerated by liberals) had he not engaged in so much anti-US/Bush rhetoric.  Or if everyone didn't have a knee-jerk reaction to "Socialism."  Also fair to wonder whether it is possible to be a nice guy and be President of Venezuela and if maybe he wasn't the best option available for that country.

But still, all in all pretty much a huge douche.  I'm not the kind of dude who revels in anyone dying because well, I think that's just stupid.  Nonetheless, it seems like most people express such sentiments from time to time for reasons that are beyond me.  And out of all the people who take shit for dying, Chavez is at the low end of the sympathy scale so... whatever.

I think he was better than Kim Jong Il or Saddam Hussein so there's something positive to remember him by sort of.

Death is just death, that's all.  I don't put very much thought into it.

It will be interesting to find out, if we ever find out, if he was just another dictator type with a trail of dead around him.  I strongly suspect the answer is yes.

What did he do to me, personally or directly? Nothing.

But according to the media, he wasn't a friend of my country or anything else that basically gives me a comfortable way of life.

According to the state department, he allowed his country to fall into (or remain in) a state in which it was unsafe for me to travel there. Colombia used to be like that...they have now cleaned it up some. Venezuela? Not so much.

He also allowed his country to fall into (or remain in) a state in which stuff like what happened to Brayan Villarreal to be a 'ho-hum' story and be 'yeah we have heard about stuff like this a dozen times before' and how now Brayan has to say things like 'if they had known who they were robbing, my brother would have been kidnapped.' WHAT?!?! Chavez was running that country. If nothing else, Chavez needed to be the one to stop that, and he didn't do anything effective.

Soooo, yeah, that's why it would be arguable to say that while he didn't do anything to me directly, he did a whole lot of other things to his own people which were pretty bad.

They would be kidnapping people in Venezuela no matter who was in charge.

That is possible but that doesn't mean attempts to curb it should be dismissed. They don't kidnap people so frequently in the rest of the world. They do in Venezuela. Clearly the penalties against it and the enforcement of it aren't strong enough.

Chavez didn't do much to fight it.

Yeah, good idea.  Re-institute the death penalty and give the government more police power.  That always solves it.

He gave Venezuelans free national healthcare and education. But he was also outspoken against the USA, so therefore he's an evil fuck.

(This is tongue-in-cheek, by the way...)

TBF, we did try to kill him and I would hardly say our interests there lay with bettering the quality of life for Venezuelans as the people we funded were no better than he was.

I suppose he was sowewhat legit in the sense that he did have interests (however misguided) beyond just enriching himself.  He tried to help the poor in various modest ways.  You know, as long as they stuck with the game plan.  And weren't Jewish.  Or women.

in venezuela it's almost a crime to be rich.  it essentially is.  there's a lot of beauty in venezuela.  i'd like to go there someday.  not sure how safe it is for tourists, thankfully i never became a major league baseball player.  i don't think it matters that he's no longer calling the shots.  i doubt anything will change for the citizenry.
