QOTW: Reimaged for 2018
« on: January 01, 2018, 10:43:28 PM »

After a few years break, I thought I'd bring back the Question of the Day thread, but as Question of the Week.

QOTW: What movie(s) are you looking forward to the most in 2018?

Super Troopers 2!

Also, The Phantom Thread, although that might be considered a 2017 film.

I loved Ex Machina (crazy disco dancing included), so I'm looking forward to the follow-up by Alex Garland.

I feel like there is no way they can make those books into a movie.

A huge part of what made the books good was the creepy prose.  It's very Lovecraftian in that he never outright describes stuff.  He doesn't use made up words, but it's the same thing.  He imbues a word like "fertile" or "seed" with so much ominous tone.  How do you capture that non-linguistically?  Not knowing what is actually happening or even what things really look like is part of what makes it scary.  It's like how you could never make a Lovecraft movie because the description of the Cthulhu will always be scarier than seeing one.

Also the books are both intentionally confusing as hell and the plot is slow-played.  I don't know that you can get away with that much lack of direction in a movie.  And finally, Natalie Portman is so crazily, horrendously wrong for that role.

QOTW - Week 2

Have you ever built or played in a structure made of snow (igloo, snow fort, etc.)?

As a kid we always tried to build snow forts. The best we got was a small wall that was probably 1 or 2 feet high. There just wasn't enough snow for an actual fort.

I vaguely remember making an igloo type once.  I remember more vividly making a rock structure held together by mud with a few other kids when I was like 8.  It had like 2 or 3 rooms and everything.  So that's all I've got.

Yes.  We made them all the time.  One year we built one big enough we could stand in it.  I mean, we were like 4 feet tall at the time but that was still a pretty big snowfort.

a very long time ago when the blizzards of 77 & 78 hit. after that, maybe once really drunk in the last decade on a snow day with friends.
