That Rainer Maria album is strange.

Caitlin DeMarrais pretty much went adult contemporary.  Kaia Fischer, who always struck me as the biggest meathead in Emo (which admittedly is like being the most liberal country singer) came out as transgender.

Then they dropped by far the heaviest album of their career.  It was okay.  The individual tracks were all generally quite good, but the album as a whole was too same-y.

It was kinda same-y, I'll agree with that.  I went into it expecting not to really like it, but did like the single, so I was pleased to not feel the need to shut it off.

Dhani Harrison on the other hand, I'd have turned it off after a couple of songs if I'd had access to my phone (I was in the shower while it was playing) .

I can't stand Arcade Fire, I think their trying-too-hard-to-be-weird-for-the-sake-of-being-weird schtick is awful.

I don't think you have a good eye for schtick.

Arcade Fire is very anthemic.  They walk a pretty tight line.  If they get it right it really gets you going, but miss by a fraction and it just kind of plods.

Reflekor aside, thereís always one or two songs on each album that really work, and the rest just sort of bore me.  I donít hate them, I just zone out.

I have not really listened to the new album except for a few cuts.  I found them to be mostly misses, except for Creature Comfort which sucks incredibly.  Iím guessing there is probably one awesome track on that album somewhere.  Only I will never hear it because after Creature Comfort Comfort I can never take them seriously ever again.

I like everything about New Pornographers except their music.  Itís not even that their music is bad, it just feels like it could be better.  If it was some band I never heard of, I would like them.  I blame Neko Case, because I feel the same about her solo records. This voice is incredible, the songs canít match it.

I like Jessica Lea Mayfield, I just donít love Jessica Lea Mayfield.  I want other people to love her though, because I like how her sound has been evolving and I feel like she is maturing.  I think sheís gonna put out a fantastic album one of these days if she keeps at it.

Anna Burch is similar.  I like her more because sheís got more pop, so it keeps it more fun and amiable even when she misses a bit.  That same sweet tooth probably limits her upside a bit compared to Mayfield though.

The new Lucy Dacus is amazing.  I did not think she had it in her.  Sheís got this weird thing where her songs do not feel fully assembled.  The lyrics are strange, the parts kinda donít go together. Sheís not the greatest singer.  Hard to put your finger on it.   But sheís always off-kilter the same way.  And the fact that it feels a little off makes you listen more closely whereas otherwise youíd dusmiss it.  And then it gives the hooks a chance to sink in and you stop worrying about it.

Which, to bring it back full circle, is how I felt about Rainer Maria.  DeMarrais has a shrill voice, Fischer just kinda screams and his guitar work is nothing special.  But somehow that dual punch managed to work.  When they got more polish on their later albums, they just got boring.

Bonus circle:  The kings of songs that donít make any sense was GBV.  They write tons of catchy hooks, but they were just like strung together kind of randomly.  A GBV song was like four half-finished good ideas mashed together. Except I hated that about them.  I actually really love the much-maligned Do the Collapse.  Sure Ric Ocasek overdid it with the keyboards a bit, but those songs are great.  Strong and melodic and the parts tie together.  Someone finally sat Pollard down and forced him to finish a song.  Isolation Drills is similar and also good but doesnít get shat on nearly as much.

you think creature comfort was bad, they've got a peter pan song.  i grew to like it.  creature comfort is terrible but we don't deserve love is incredible.  they also seem to always give the haitian chick a song which usually winds up saving the album

Well, admittedly I may have only heard stuff from Reflektor.  What I have heard was genuinely awful, IMHO, certainly nothing I'd call anthemic.  I'll try some other stuff and see what happens.

It's nice talking music again.  There hasn't been much of that around here for a while.

dude, suburbs won a grammy.  a fucking grammy.  they won the woxy boards album of the year numerous times.  all you've heard is maybe reflektor?  you know, you sound like my wife.  on what we refer to as our first date, i pick her up to go to a corn maze.  this was around the time the grammy winning album suburbs was winning grammys.  i said to her, you like the suburbs album?  what?  arcade fire.  they won a grammy.  what's on fire?   i knew right then i had a blank slate, a mind to program.  i already figured i was gonna marry her

So you're judging them from deep cuts off Reflektor?  Maybe a little harsh.  I'm with my man dd here, Suburbs is terrific.  Funeral was terrific.  This last album, Everything Now, is their worst hands down, except Electric Blue is the song that they let the woman sing that saves the album, as he put it.  Put Your Money on Me is also pretty good.

They are a little insufferable, yes.  I'll give you that much.

I always thought Arcade Fire's Funeral was the best album of the decade. At least, that's how I felt at the time.

I gave it a listen this weekend and still enjoyed it thoroughly but I found my mind drifting and not really in the mood. Maybe I've matured, or maybe it was just me at that time.

Suburbs was good but I liked the first album better. It definitely had a few great tracks on it, though.

Yeah, you can't take Funeral away from them.

I think that every album since then has gotten worse.  Partly I think it's because Funeral was our first exposure to them, so the other stuff doesn't sound as fresh.  And when they attempt to deviate from that sound they are less successful.  But also because Win Butler got up his own ass and became very preachy with the lyrics.  And the music as well.

Funeral wasn't exactly subtle but there was a bit of enigmatic melancholy to it.  Now everything is all aligned to drive home a point.  They're no longer angst-y, just angry.  Funeral was the anthem for lonely nerds in back of classrooms.  Everything Now is like the annoying overachiever kid who was always making a show of political causes.

Although really, that's kind of overstating things.  Nothing they have done since Funeral is bad by any stretch.  It's just not awesome and it takes more work to ferret out the good bits.  And like I said, Everything Now is probably okay, I just can't get over Creature Comfort.

For what its worth, Win Butler made a currency joke onstage circa 2008 when I saw them in NYC. So that's amazing.
