Abandoned Movies 2018
« on: February 23, 2018, 08:44:50 AM »

1. CHERRY POP - Netflix - 02/22/18 - I was sad to see this week's episode of Drag Race All-Stars end. So, I found this movie on Netflix. It was pretty awful, with the exception of the songs that the queens lip-synced. But, it took 25 minutes or so to get to anything I enjoyed and that wasn't enough to keep me around.

Killing of a Sacred Deer

What a load of old bollocks this was. A few scenes of Cincinnati and Covington plus the interior/exterior of Christ Hospital (plus an appearance of our building at 43 minutes) did not make up for utterly pretentious and hokey story telling.

2. GAME OVER, MAN! - Netflix - 03/25/18 - After watching Anders Holm in THE INTERN, I thought I'd check out his new movie that recently premiered on Netflix. IT WAS SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BAD. I might have made it through the first 10 minutes, tops. If slacker hotel housekeeping staff playing jokes on each other with loaded condoms is your idea of funny, this is the movie for you.

CASINO - It was trying so very hard to be like Goodfellas in the opening 10 minutes.  But it was so terrible.  I just wasn't feeling it at all.  There was so much narration, and it was so emotionless that I decided they were all just kind of mailing this in.  I know some people love this, but I don't think I'll ever watch this now.  I also still haven't seen THE DEPARTED.

2. ENTERTAINMENT - The movie about the anti-comedian Neil Hamburger.  I got through about 20 minutes, and it just wasn't for me.
3. INFINITY BABY - About 5 minutes of this, and realized that although I liked all of the cast, the style was seriously grating.  It was basically an extreme close-up on everyone that talked.  Megan Mullally was hilarious in the 3 minutes I saw though.  But still, PASS.

I can't blame you for these comments. 7 was surprisingly nice, but 8 was rough.

Yeah, I enjoyed 7 too. I took it for what it was on it's own. And maybe that's the thing. as they've gone along, it gets more and more diluted. This was too watered down and distant. Maybe I should have given it more of a chance but I'm like, meh....

A woman on my recent flight was watching it on her phone as we were boarding and I was THRILLED to notice it just as the Flova Scotia commercial was on the screen. Still kills me.

Roma

This film will win every award. I know this is true because I couldn't stand it. An absolute epic film-school art-house movie and to call it "deliberately paced" is an insult to the word "deliberate."

THERE WAS A WHOLE SCENE OF A MAID WALKING AROUND A HOUSE TURNING THE LIGHTS OFF!
A WHOLE SCENE!

Ugh. I know that euro loves it, and the NY Times reviewers, but ... ugh. Just ugh. We watched at least half - I know I saw the New Years scene - so I feel I gave it a real effort. But how about something interesting actually happening? How about some characters actually interacting like humans?

Really surprised by your reaction to this movie, Dan.

Then again, the director, Alfonso Cuaron, who is about my age (late 50s), made something that truly resonated to me. Growing up in Belgium (in, yes, I'll admit an upper-middle class upbringing), my family also had live-in maids, who took care of us 3 kids and LOVED us. They were sisters and were simply were part of our family. They eventually left (replaced by a man-and-wife couple who in turn became a part of our family).

BTW, one of those sisters live-in maids who left named her son after me... I mean, wow.

But it's not just that... Director Alfonse Cuaron is just simply masterful. Check out one of the late scenes in the movie, when one of the maids (who can't swim) goes into the ocean to rescue the boy... the scene takes minutes.... and all done in one long take. Just stunning. And Cuaron captures the early 70s zeitgeist perfectly. Even though this movie is set in Mexico, much resonated to me being in Belgium then (when I was a 10-11 yr. lad).
