25 Concerts for 2018
« on: March 31, 2018, 01:44:47 AM »

1.  3/30/2018 - Supersuckers/Drivin N Cryin/Tommy Grit & The Pricks--Southgate House Revival, Newport, Kentucky

My first show of the year, and March is almost over.  My younger self would be chagrined.

Supersuckers' claim of being the greatest rock and roll band in the world might be debatable but it's not easily dismissed.  Bassist/lead vocalist  Eddie Spaghetti and crew put on a relentlessly powerful rock and roll tour de force.  My initial qualms about the lack of a second guitarist who was sacked a while back and the remaining guitarist's too frequent guitar hero/rock star poses soon gave way to just enjoying the experience.  It helped that the sound man eventually got his shit together after a rough start.  The band played several songs from their forthcoming album due this summer (which I'm really looking forward to) which stood up quite well against the "hits".

Drivin N Cryin is one of those bands I've always heard about but never actually heard much of their music.  They put on a good show. Unlike many rock bands nowadays, they pay attention to songcraft, and show a lot of range.  The lead singer's voice is an acquired taste, though.  It sounded like he inhaled some helium right before taking the stage.

Locals Tommy Grit & The Pricks need a new drummer.   A lot of  times it sounded like he was drumming to a different song than the rest of the band was playing.

1.  3/30/2018 - Supersuckers/Drivin N Cryin/Tommy Grit & The Pricks--Southgate House Revival, Newport, Kentucky

2.  4/7/2018 - Karla Bonoff--Ludlow Garage, Cincinnati, Ohio

A good date night concert for Mrs. Drjohnrock and me.  Not much of a fan but I like a few songs, especially Someone To Lay Down Beside Me ("even though it's not real"), which takes me back to times in my younger days.

The new ownership has dropped the "Live At The" from the venue's name, leaving it as just "Ludlow Garage".  The wi-fi, which didn't work, had "Belkin" in the name, so it's apparently part of the Live Nation monolith.  Most if not all of the future shows were booked by the previous owners.  I won't be surprised if the ticket prices, already no bargain in most cases, get even higher down the road.

If you go to the old website, www.liveattheludlowgarage.com, there's a drop box which gives you the option of getting on the old owners' new mailing list and which states they are looking for their "next venue".  If they're able to swing it, I suggest they see if they can buy The Thompson House.  They could certainly get more acts in booked there, and there wouldn't be much overlap with the musicians who play The Southgate House Revival.

How was/were the Decemberists?
I think Colin's voice was on the fritz + the venue sucked. Did NOT have good energy. Kind of disappointing. But, a friend bought the tickets and I didn't have a lot riding on the show as I haven't really followed them since their debut album (which I was obsessed with until my obsession just died).

What about Tennis.  I'd be more interested in them personally.  I still have a few Decemberists songs in rotation, but that first Tennis album is a classic AFAIC.

St. Vincent is touring with her uncle?

That’s a lot of amazing guitar playing that I have no interest in hearing at all.  I actually liked St. Vincent’s new album quite a bit until SiriusXM played the everloving shit out of it.  Now I have to switch stations whenever it comes on, which is roughly every 10 minutes sandwiched in between Keith vile/War on Drugs and Courtney Barnett.

I really thought that with Vile and Barnett album I would finally get some relief.  But somehow they manage to play the shit out of that whil still playing the shit out of their separate albums.

YES! Her aunt and uncle open for her and do maybe a 5 song set. They are adorable, in that aunt-and-uncle-of-a-darling-rock-star way.

I know, right?

It was a private event put on by Pure Romance for its 25th anniversary. Obviously there's big money in vibrators.

TBH I felt like a fraud being there because I had all access VIP passes which meant I got to be right up front for the show, while the ladies who actually sell the stuff were behind a barrier wall. That just didn't seem very fair to me. Their hard work was what allowed CEO Patty Brisben to amass her Pure Romance fortune, yet they were walled off from the show. I mean, they could see everything, but I dunno. Just felt weird to me. I am quite happy to accept free tickets to a concert now and then, but I guess I'm just not cut out to be a VIP sort of person.

3.  4/21/2018 -  Sierra Hull/Don Gallardo--Southgate House Revival, Newport, Kentucky

This show barely misses my short list of greatest concerts ever seen.  When I last saw Sierra Hull, she was 17 years old and fronting a bluegrass band.  But in the last couple of years, the now 26 year old has concentrated on developing as a songwriter and has toured with a trio.  On this night it was Sierra on mandolin and vocals, along with a violinist and bass violinist.  I had seen her in scaled down settings in live concerts on youtube which I liked but didn't think were as good as her bluegrass work.  But after seeing her in person, I can honestly say the bluegrass band was holding her back.  Her mandolin playing has gone from excellent to astounding, touching on a lot of different genres and showing that the instrument shouldn't be limited to bluegrass or folk music. Her singing and songwriting are  coming along nicely and, as always, she showed great inventiveness when interpreting the songs of others, making mundane tracks by REM and Tears For Fears sound fresh.  I don't think there is any limit to what she can do, and she's only 26 for chrissakes.  I look forward to seeing many more great shows from this amazing musician.
