4- bhagavad gita- translated and commentary by ac bhaktivedanta swami prabhupada- this guy is not a party animal.  even though he hung out with george harrison.  no, he's just a devotee of an impossible way to live.  complete detachment from the material world.  of the seven hundred verses in the bhagavad gita, he supplied roughly a page of commentary.  lots of repetition.  which was actually useful.  made important principles stick.  he said that was the point.  but what he said made a lot of sense.  i'm gonna read a less hardcore translation of the gita and hopefully come out a lot less scarred

5-lord of light- roger zelazny- when i read the jacket i laughed.  in a colony planet a group of men gained control of technology and become immortal fashioning themselves after the Hindu pantheon of gods.  it seems i'm going to question what i just read already.  i said that to my wife and she chuckled as well.  i don't get if zelazny was trying to make some kind of point or was just telling a story.  it's a fine book, though action sequences with religious overtones were a bit much for me

1. "Manhattan Beach" - Jennifer Egan - Give me a book that's just about Eddie and the bosun.
2. "Dark Sacred Night" - Michael Connelly - Connelly finally puts Bosch and Ballard together and I like it.
3. "My Own Devices: Essays From the Road on Music, Science, and Senseless Love" - Dessa - I first heard about Dessa during Barb during her MPR days. I saw this book on the NPR book thingy and thought I would check it out. Parts of this book will definitely stick with me for a long time. I love the way her mind works, even if it seems to work against her in some aspects of her life.
4. "Come with Me" - Helen Schulman - Slooooooooooow start but I finally connected with the book in the final quarter. But, it took me all month (and about a week and a half of late fines from the library) to finish it.

I walked away loving it for how it shows that life can seem so short and so long, depending on how you look at it. All of the little "God winks" along the way were a bit much and I kept yelling at the book during those moments. I know nothing of Dublin and wished that I did while reading this.

Oh, I loved this video of the author reading one of the best parts of the book. I treated myself to it after finishing the novel. It makes me think that I might have enjoyed it even more if I had listened to the audiobook version.

Yeah, a few folks in our book club said the same about the "god winks" but at the same time Dublin is such a small city that it isn't surprising that two of the characters kept meeting. But yeah, NYC and Amsterdam were a bit of a stretch.

Published in 1852, this beautifully written novel casts an unflinching eye on slavery in America. At times difficult to read because of the ugliness of the business of slavery, it is nonetheless essential reading to understand the pro- and anti- slavery mindsets of the populace during that very low point in American history. I can certainly understand why it was the best selling novel of the 19th century, and how it turned the tide in favor of the abolitionist movement.

i picked up an agatha christie book at the thrift store a few years ago.  death in the air.   i've wanted to read it on a flight just for the other passengers reactions.  i'm a bit reluctant
